3. STORY OF THE JANITOR:
I once heard a story that has stayed with me through the
years. It goes something like this:
Late one night a businessman was walking through a
hospital when he saw a janitor sweeping the hallway. There was
something different about this janitor. He looked as if he
genuinely liked his job. He acted as though what he did actually
mattered and that seemed to make him happy.
Intrigued by this man he had never met, the businessman
asked the janitor, “What do you do here?” The reply he received
was not what he expected. What he expected to hear was, “I
sweep the floors” or “I’m on the night cleaning crew” or maybe
even “I’m the head custodian of the hospital.” But nothing of that
nature was the reply of the janitor.
4. Instead the man said, “We save lives.” He then continued sweeping.
As the businessman left the hospital, he could not help but ponder
the unique answer to his question. Most people would think of a janitor
as nothing more than someone who sweeps and cleans buildings. But
this janitor saw what he did in a more profound light. He understood that
what they were doing in that hospital really did matter. He understood
that without him keeping the halls and the rooms clean, the doctors and
nurses could not do their jobs effectively and the patients’ lives would be
at risk. He understood that his work literally did save lives and, without
his diligence, far less lives would have been saved in that hospital.
When we understand why we do what we do, when we have a
deeper purpose in our profession, when we truly believe that what we are
doing matters and is helping to make the world a better place, it is then
and only then that work ceases to be work. It is then and only then that
we find fulfillment and happiness in our chosen professions and careers.
