At the end of each chapter is a section titled “Key Concepts”, and next to each concept is a
corresponding page where you will find its definition. Please expand on the text’s given definition,
using other relevant terms from the chapter, and also give a practical example of that key concept.
Please don’t simply supply the text definition. This is not what I want. I’m looking for your input

showing a basic understanding of each “Key Concept”. A 1 or 2 sentence answer is not acceptable,
nor is a few bullet points. Show me you understand the concept.

This week I would like each of you to pick your own Macroeconomic issue from the national news
and comment on it. I like the Wall Street Journal but you can pick another similar newspaper. There
are many Macroeconomic issues in the news right now. As you learned in Chapter 2,
macroeconomics is the study of economy wide phenomena. So find a topic to comment on and tell
us where you found it. Make sure your topic fits the definition of a Macroeconomic issue. With a
class this large, I realize that some duplication of issues will occur so I expect that when that
happens that each take on the issue will be unique and well researched. Some issues found here
may be used in future discussions.
Also, if possible, when making your comments on other classmates see if you can possibly find
comments that you disagree with. That makes for more interesting discussions. The purpose of this
exercise is to make you more aware of the issues being discussed every day and to help you identify
those that are Macroeconomic issues and those that are Microeconomic issues.

As we found in this week’s readings, Economic Growth and Public Policy are directly linked. If you
had the ability to affect government policy, drawing from the topics in Chapter 25, what would you do
to raise productivity and living standards today?

This week I would like you to comment on an idea regarding our taxation system called the "Fair
Tax". There is nothing about this in the book but there is a good amount of information available on
the Internet. Take a look at their ideas and let us know how you feel about it and why.

Are unions good or bad for the economy? I am not looking for a yes or no response here. I am
looking for a comment that is backed up by facts or statistics. Again everyone is entitled to their own
opinion based on the facts so we all need to respect that. Also comment about whether you feel
differently about unions in not for profit areas (police, fireman, teachers...) and those in for -profit
businesses.

The final chapter in out text discusses “Six Debates over Macroeconomic Policy”. Which debate you
personally have the strongest feeling over, and do you fall on the “pro” or “con” side of the
reasoning? Why is this a thought driver for you? Can you share an example of how it may have
affected you? Lastly, take the opposite side of the argument, and explain how it could have been
used to benefit your situation.
