What are the listening strategies?
5. 1. Connect
Help yourself better understand a listening assignment
by thinking of things you already know about a topic. This helps
your mind build connections between what you know and new
information you will hear. Say to yourself things like. “this lecture
explains how and why we should stay healthy in this time of
pandemic.
BEFORE LISTENING STRATEGIES
6. 2. Predict
Make guesses about what you may learn as you
listen. Guessing helps your brain focus on the
assignment. It doesn’t matter if you guesses are right or
wrong. For instance, if the topic is about COVID19, you
might guess “face mask and alcohol would be highly in
demand. I am afraid there would be running out of stock
or price increase on these products.”
BEFORE LISTENING STRATEGIES
7. 3. Talk about new words
if there is a list of preselected vocabulary words
from the assignment, go through the list and think about
what you know about them. If you don’t know the words,
talk about them with a friendor use any available offline or
online dictionary.
BEFORE LISTENING STRATEGIES
8. 4. Listen for answers

identify questions you ask
DURING LISTENING STRATEGIES
9. 5. Take notes

DURING LISTENING STRATEGIES
11. 7. Respond
What do you agree and disagree with?
What parts do you like best?
Use symbols such as ! Before an idea
that you like and X for those you don’t
like.
AFTER LISTENING STRATEGIES
13. 9. Extend
Read and listen to other sources for
more information about the topic.`
AFTER LISTENING STRATEGIES
14. ● Pay attention-
Give the speaker your undivided attention and acknowledge the message.
Recognize that non-verbal communication also “speaks” loudly.
● Show that you are listening
Use your own body language and gestures to show that you are engaged.
Encourage the speaker to continue with small verbal comments like “yes”, and “uh
huh”.
● Provide feedback
Our personal filters, assumptions, judgements, and beliefs can distort what we hear.
As a listener, your role is to understand what is being said. This may require you to
reflect on what is being said and to ask questions.
5 Key Active Listening Strategies
15. ● Defer Judgment
Interrupting is a waste of time. It frustrates the speaker and limits full
understanding of the message.
● Respond Appropriately
Active listening is designed to encourage respect and understanding. You
are gaining information and perspective. You add nothing by attacking
the speaker or otherwise putiing her down.
