Believing that maturity, not scholarship, is the first aim of education, the Woodcraft
Way builds character and equips youth with strength and resiliency (body), new
skills (mind), deeper understanding of their place in the world (spirit), and greater
commitment to their community (service). The Woodcraft Way encourages
individuals to find, test, and explore their strengths, in the company of friends and
committed guides, who provide a sense of belonging and support so that they may
grow confidently in many directions.

2019 Values Statement: Believing that every child will forge their own way to self-
identity, we create a broad range of experiences so that they may discover
themselves.
1957 Program Objective: “…Opportunities for self-expression, citizenship training,
and the acquisition of skills and interests which will enable the individual child to
develop towards the ideal of a self-reliant and well-adjusted adult. “
Woodcraft is a philosophy of life, a different approach to the outer world and a method of creating a

2019 Values Statement: From our beginnings, ensuring equitable
access to learning and play, so that every child may realize his or her
full potential, has been paramount.
1957 Program Objective: “To provide service to boys and girls of all
walks of life with a particular effort being made to serve youngsters in
areas of greater social need.” And “No child shall be denied
participation by his financial status.”

2019 Values Statement: To fully develop the self, young people need
opportunities to reconnect to the natural world and honor the home we
all share.
1957 Program Objective: “To provide year-round outdoor activities…”
Recreation, conservation, and the development of avocation are its goals. It stresses outdoor life and
activity. It includes alternative programs for urban areas and indoor times. -- ETS

which permits maximum contact between professional and volunteer.

2019 Values Statement: We have always respected the developmental needs of
the child and believe in meeting each individual and community where they are.
1957 Program Objective: “To emphasize the dignity and worth of the individual. To
maintain a philosophy of granting awards and recognition for achievement of a
standard rather than through competition.”
Developmentalists, who believe that all children are born good (with rare exceptions) ... and need only
to be developed under sound leadership. Of this class are the Woodcrafters. -- ETS
