1. Further Shot Count Analysis – Asking Alexandria
Analysis
"The Final Episode" by Asking Alexandria fits into the Metalcore music genre,
this being the music genre I have chose to focus on for my media studies project.
I chose to analyse Asking Alexandria, as they are a famous and an influential
Metalcore band, I had to look at the music video in great detail, throughout I
came up with 351 shots in total. Most of these shots were pacey medium close
ups, jump cuts were used to go with the pace of music. We will incorporate these
elements into our music video, upbeat, pacey edits that fit well with the music
piece.
Narrative
The music video itself does not pose a clear understandable narrative, but telling
by the location and props it fits well with the correct music, the use of a
warehouse and the slow motion effects make for an important and effective
understanding. The lyrical content 'If only he knew about the world without the
bulls**t and the lies' looked and are emphasised well, you can tell this through
emotion and facial expressions, through performance being convincing it makes
the music video more realistic and believable.
Genre
Asking Alexandria fall into the Metalcore genre. Metalcore is a genre that holds
no bounds and shows a heavy emotional performance, its a heavy fusion of
Extreme Metal and Hardcore Punk, originating around 1989 but later taking
mainstream success around 1999 - 2001, a band of this genre would emphasise
these emotions played through the instruments and vocals, the use of heavy
guitar riffs and double bass make for a typical metalcore song, also the vocals are
screamed, showing raw emotion and passion to the music, the use of clean vocals
are incorporated in todays metalcore, with singing in bridges and chorus' The
lyrical content would genuinely be of something significant in a life, and they
portray these emotions in a song, metalcore links well to other genres and sub
genres, such as: Deathcore, Post Hardcore, Hard Rock and Death Metal.
Associated artists are the likes of Parkway Drive, Bring Me The Horizon, Bullet
For My Valentine and A Day To Remember.
Audience
The target audience of this music video, would be from 15 - 21, this music
appeals to those who's rebel and want a change, with an older middle aged
person, they would have grown up and lost appeal in the music and what it
stands for, to a teenager it's raw, new and exciting to discover new music.
Representation
The music video represents, the target audience well, those who are young raw
and wanting new changes. also by the lyrical content shows that they repel lies
and modern society, this music is popular and iconic in the metalcore scene, they
have been going for over five years and they keep getting more popular and
further noticed.
