The text on the cover is used very minimally, so your attention isn't drawn from the
image that takes up the majority of the cover. On the cover they use two different
fonts. The masthead at the top of page, is thin with sharp edges, this makes the
cover aesthetically pleasing and appealing to a modern audience, it also matches
that it is a very small amount of information. Especially in comparison to the block
of text at the bottom of the page which is bolder and uses a more formal font style,
this matches the text because there is more information. Overall he text however
overall is not very large as the main attraction to this cover, is instead the photo of
the desert. Photos in this magazine are clearly the most important part as text
never covers major parts of photos but is instead normally in a place where there is
very little change in colour, e.g. the sky.In the rest of the magazine there is more text than there are
photos, however on the pages shown it is 1:1 as for every
image there is text to go with it. However even though there
is more text images will normally take the priority, as they
will normally take a large proportion of space on the page,
and text will normally just be used to explain the photo in a
very formal way. Photos in the magazine are normally very
colorful and eye catching, however white is also used to give
the magazine a theme that runs throughout it.

On the cover of this magazine the title is the primary focus as it is in a large easy to
read font at the top of the page, and unlike other magazines it is on top of
everything around it. This is very similar to the text at the bottom of the image. On
the cover of the magazine it uses a direct address and talks directly to the reader
using ‘You’ and ‘Your’, this builds up more of a connection between the reader and
author. The cover also has bright using a light pinks and blue on either side of a
woman's face. There are also two blobs in the top corner these are used to draw
attention to a certain area and emphasizes it. Both blobs use money to draw
people into the magazine, one draws people in with the appeal of winning a large
sum of money while the uses the word free. Both of these are in large fonts
compared to the rest of the sentences, they are also in white which is verycontrasting to the colourful backgrounds of the blobs.
There are many more photos inside of the magazine than
there is blocks of text, text will also never come as a priority
over images, however it will be worked into the image like on
the left where they didn't just use black text they used white
so it feels more incorporated into the image. The images
themselves are basic, thus is so they appeal to a much
broader audience of beginner photographers who see the
photos as much more achievable. The magazine also backs
this up by using direct address when it says your images can
be on the disk as it makes the audience feel like they are able

The cover for this magazine is very bold and has a lot of text around it, the text is
very simple and doesn't give any significant information out other than that you
can find more out in the magazine. The text is bold to draw attention to it, also
because it is appealing to an audience that like bold shooters; young people. The
title uses a very simple font and doesn't have any capitalization this is also so that it
appeals to a younger audience, as they have much less care for the lack of
punctuation compared to someone who is much more mature, who may see it as
informal. There is also a blob on the cover which is used to emphasize another
piece of information. The cover also uses a color scheme which matches to that of
the title of the game they are using on there front cover, this is to create a link to
the two things. On the inside of the magazine it is quite different to the
cover as it trades small amounts of text to instead have a
long reviews of the games inside. This is much less
appealing to the younger audience as they are much less
willing to read big blocks of text. However there are still lots
of images inside which they will find much more appealing.
The font used inside is very simple but clear and easy to
read, it is quite a small font unless a certain part is trying to
be emphasized. The colour scheme of the cover also runs
trough the magazine giving it a clear theme, which makes it
appear much more formal.

The cover of OK! Magazine uses a lot of bold colors as its primary way to appeal to
an audience, it also uses very feminine colors such as pinks and yellows. The main
text on the cover is the cover lines which tell the audience what is in the magazine,
however the actual title of the magazine is mostly covered by images, which gives
the impression that magazine cares more about image than the actual text. The
cover also uses many bubbles and bullets to separate the different stories but also
to make sure that people see each different story. The inside of the magazines very
similar as it is primarily large photos with very minimal amount of text, however the
text is normally very bold to make it seem as though the photo is of importance.
The magazine is also littered with lots of different adverts, so the magazine is very
informal. The Ok website is very
similar as it uses lots of
photos which hint at
something happening,
which is then backed up by
a catchy header that is
slightly misleading. However the website is very dull in comparison to the
bright colors of the magazine, instead using greys and red.
The layout is also more simple and is laid out in columns
rather than different shaped boxes which are more
intriguing
RESEARCHH T T P S : / / W W W . Q T H E M U S I C . C O M
Q website is laid out in a very clear manner where everything is clearly accessible.
The top of the page is clearly laid out as the header where you are able to access
other parts of the Q website, it is very minimal s it is just a black header with the Q
logo and the tabs are just white text. Down the right side of the website the space
is used for adverts and to show off the latest magazine. The website uses the
same font and colors that it uses on its magazine, this creates a clear theme
through their products. Lower down the page they have articles, they are all an
image to give light understanding of the story it is then followed by a vague but
intriguing title to draw people in. The articles all vary in size but it is clear that
they aim there magazine at a more mature audience.Inside one of the magazines it is very appealing for more
mature audiences as pages are usually filled with small text.
One page has a large intriguing photo of a famous artist that
people will easily recognize. The second page with information
on also has a large red letter underneath the much smaller text,
it is always the first initial of the artist. This is to link to the
artist but also to link to the magazines overall theme, this is
because it uses the same font as there logo, it is the inverse
way round as the logo is a white Q on way red background.
PRACTICE WORK EVALUATION PAGE 1
On day one we learnt how to use tools within InDesign to create
magazines, I used the skills to create the two page spread (left)
and layout a website. The skills we learnt; how to create boxes,
add text, wrap text, place images, create columns, create rows and
how to manipulate text. First off we had to create columns and
rows these help create a theme through the magazine so that
everything lines up perfectly, you can see this in my image as
images and text are in the same size areas. When I started the
double page spread I decide that columns would be 5 by 5 on
each page Even larger areas of photo andtext still fit inside the columns and rows I created, they just cover multiple ones. First I laid
out where images were going and then added them to the magazine. To do this I first had to
create empty boxes, then I had to open Photoshop and create an image that was the same size as
the box that I just created on InDesign. I would then save this image as a jpeg, move back to
InDesign, select the box and then press cmd + D to place the image in the box, alternatively I could
have gone to edit – place. After I had done this with the images I added text, to do this you have
to draw a text box with the text tool, however I had to draw multiple so I could fit the text in. When
a box overflows you need to use the select tool and click a red box at the bottom of the text box
which gives you a prompt to choose where you want the overflowing text to go. When you have
got the text you need you can then manipulate it so that it stands out and is eye catching, you can
remove hyphenation in text boxes, change the space between words , change eight of letters, make
it so that paragraphs stretch to the edges of the text boxes.
PRACTICE WORK EVALUATION PAGE 2
On the same day I also practiced creating a website, to start with I
created 8 columns, no rows however. Leaving out columns meant
that I was able to make images any size vertically that I wanted
them to be. In this design I decided to go with a black and white
theme, I created the boxes I wanted for the images, I planned to
add text to the page however I never got time, the text would
have been in the middle as I was leaving the outer column's
empty.
With these two pages there are things that could be improved. On the website I haven't lined
everything up perfectly as at the top in the banner the icons and links to other parts of the site sit in
the margins between columns, so I would move these more central to the columns they are
supposed to be in. I do however like the variation in the size of images that I have used, this because
it adds variation to the page, it also allows there to be emphasis on certain pictures. On the double
page spread I would change the large fonts that I used, I used them because it matched the font that I
used in the largest image, however this had a negative impact on the rest of the page as the font
didn't match the quite formal layout I chose. However even though my layout is quite formal there is
a big variation in the size of text boxes that I used which was primarily due to the fact that my pages
didn't have an even number of boxes on them, but this means that the page in tern wasn't a boring
block of text.
Working Title:
DERELICT – This is the title of the magazine as it perfectly encapsulates what the magazine is about, it is about me exploring
and photographing run down buildings. Ideas for these places are a library (Leeds), a Hotel (Leeds), Orphanage (Bramham),
school (adel), Office (Halifax), Iron Works (menston). The colour scheme for the logo will be either a flat colour or a mix of
greens and blues, probably a dark blue and a light green. The font will be a bold but have very sharp edges and corners.
Audience:
I will target my magazine at men between the age 15-25 as it is about exploring old buildings, stereotypically this would be
more appealing to this audience as it involves going in dirty places that require you to have to climb about to find more
places to photograph. The young age is because this is the period people are seen to be fittest and most energetic. My
magazine will be aimed at c1 and c2 social class, as people in this class have money to be able to buy cameras but also wont
be the most educated. If they have bought cameras they will some form of interest in what I am saying in the magazine,
them being less educated than higher classes as well means that I don’t have to talk as formally in my magazine, this means I
can be more personal as I am not out of my comfort zone. The psychograph my magazine is aimed at people who are
needs driven as I will write about going out on impulse and taking photos and how there doesn't have to be any major
planning relating to exploration. However it will also appeal to want to bees as I will talk about how to use the photos to
make you look like you have a cool life even if you don’t. My magazine will be a mix between entertainment and
informative. As entertainment it will be showing off the photos I take and will tell interesting stories about the places that I
have visited and how long they have been derelict, it will be informative as I will talk about how I took the images and how
I'm able to get into these places. So this will appeal to people who want to escape from their reality and experience the life
of someone else. My magazine will be regionally based as I will be talking about buildings in a certain area, It will only be
out in places near where I visited so that people would be able to go there themselves easily without much travel.
Rationale (approx. 100 words)
I will be able to use my skills that I have learnt from Photoshop to create my magazine, as I am very capable of using a range
of effects and styles within Photoshop. I created a print advert for the brand IRN BRU which required me to use a large
range of these techniques such as masks, gradients, filters, saturations and I even created my own brushes, I will be able to
use my knowledge of adobe suits to help when I use in design. I also have knowledge within the topic of my magazine as I
very passionate about going exploring so have practice when it comes to photographing and talking about these places.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
The magazine that I will be making will be talking about abandoned places that I have visited and photographed. I will be
talking in detail about how I got into the places a long with a backstory to inform people the history of the buildings and
what has caused them to be left derelict. So I will have to do research to find who previously in habited buildings, as it may
be a company or a person, also I will need to know what happened to these people. This means that before I start my
magazine I will have to research new places to go into, I also need to find out if there is any value in going as not all are
worth the travel. Which is another thing I need to find out, as travel is important information especially if there is no value in
going. It is also important to tell the readers how much climbing is necessary as this will put many people off going to these
places if they hard or very unsafe to get into, however the more unsafe it is the more interesting the magazine is so for
entertainment this can be exaggerated to build suspense.
Evaluation (approx. 50 words)
First of all I will be doing a weekly review of how the project is going overall and what improvements I have been doing each
week. However when I have finished the project I will be doing a questionnaire, this will help me see what I missed out from
COLOUR IDEAS
The colour scheme that is on the left is a collection of off
whites and different shades of blues. The biggest range of
colour comes from the two blues which have a big range of
shades that work well together. The off whites however do
not have clear shades and both look very similar as well. I
then used this colours to create a mock up of what my
double page background could looklike if they are what I used. I used the blues primarily creating the stripe pattern but then
complimented the outlines with a larger off white stripe through them all. However this colour scheme
doesn't really represent old things and gives the feeling that magazine is more about baby boys.
This colour scheme has slightly larger range of colours and
shades. I have got one colour that is the focus in the 4
colours and this time it is a green. However the other
colours are not as similar as the previous one, this time I
have got an off white again but also gone for a pink as well,
both however have much clearer shades. I used the colours
to then create the same mock up asbefore, I made the primary colour green and then mixed the pink and off white colour to create the
stripe that goes behind. These colours are much better at representing what my magazine is about.
The double page has a retro feel which is old, this is perfect as my magazine is about an old
abandoned house.
FONT IDEAS
These fonts all have
a very similar style,
they all are
calligraphy/hand
written fonts. This
style of font would
be used to invite
people in as it is
seen as very
personal and
informal. These
style of fonts would
work well on
the cover of my magazine as the
masthead as the soft feeling would go
well with the planned aesthetic I'm going
for. The Super Natural font would work
well on my double page spread as it looks
more rigid and rushed than the others so
I can make it fit in with the smoke graphic
I plan to use.
This font is very minimal and
would work well as the
masthead as it has a very
modern feel which will make
the coveraesthetically pleasing and minimal which is the style I'm
going for. However the font is very thin so would be
hard to read as a block of text.
This font has a retro sci-fi
effect to it, so even though
my magazine is about old
buildings this font would
beGreat on a magazine cover as it is clear to read but is
still eye catching, would be mostly used as text for the
cover stories.
MOCK UPS
On the left side of the page will be a large image with very limited
amounts of colour, this will cover the majority of the page. In front of this
there will be lots of little images, these will all be images that I have taken.
Each image will look like it is in fires as if it is coming out of the chimney.
The second page will be primarily text with two more images in the top left
corner. This text may be about the history of the building, it will also be
about how I got into the building and why I took certain photos.
I'm going to have a colour theme that is exactly the same on my cover and my
double page spread as this creates a clear link between the two. I think I will
use orange and black, this is because the two colours create and old looking
aesthetic. The front cove will be primarily occupied by a large image that will
link to the main double page article, it will also be colour overlaid to be the
colour of the over all theme. The masthead will be an a bold font that has a
think white drop shadow to give it some depth, however the text will be behind
the larger image. The story's will be in a smaller, thinner font that the mast
head but will have the same drop shadow effect, however unlike the masthead
the text will go over the top of the larger image, this makes it easier to read as
you can see the whole text. The background will be black so that it is
contrasting , this makes the text much clearer as it is very contrasting.
DOUBLE PAGE GRAPHIC PRODUCTION
First I drew out the basic
shape of the roof and
chimney on Photoshop
using different brush sizes
I Then transferred the drawing
into illustrator where I used the
line to create the thicker lines
and a then used to brush tool to
create bricks that have smoother
lines as illustrator smooths all
lines out
I then took the image back
into Photoshop where I
added two base colours to
the image, two different
shades of orange. These
were bases which I would
then use to add shading to.
I then added other colour to
show bricks adding more
detail to the image.
I then used the brush
tool with white on the
left edges of the roof
to make it look as
though light was
hitting it.I did the same with black on the right to make it
look as if it was a shadow, I lowered the opacity
of these so it wasn't to over whelming.
I finally added a 15 pixel
stroke in orange to show
clear difference from the
image the background.
Each different colour is
on a separate layer so
that each was easy to go
and edit.
DOUBLE PAGE GRAPHIC PRODUCTION
I then proceeded
to creat smoke
clouds on
illustrator leaving a
large area for my
page title to go. It
is made up of
simple wavy lines
drawn using the
brush tool.I then dragged this
into photoshop
where I left the
main colour as
black but added a
clear orange
outline to link it to
the chimneys
overall design.
I then added the title which I use a font called
“Triumph Wheels” this font works well as it is
very retro and old, which is the feeling I was
going for as I wrote about an old abandoned
building. I also added a light blue
background as pure white was confusing to
the eye as you never expect to see a building
with no colour behind it.The final page is a complete U-turn on
most of the previous developments.
Firstly the most obvious difference is the
colour change to black and pink. This
process took time as I had to re colour
the house. The reason for the change is
that the colouring before was boring
and not very eye catching, this was a
large improvement. Smaller change is
that there is no longer any colour
splodges in the text which there was
before, I removed this by colouring in
the centre to remove the stroke that was
FRONT COVER DEVELOPMENT
First I created the background
with a thin border. Instead of
making it orange as planned I
went for pink as it now matched
the double page.
I then added to the mast head
and I used the font “Cooper std”
as it is clear and has an old
aesthetic. I used the filter ripple
to make the edges wavy and I
used warp to give it the wave
effect.
I then added three lines in
different sizes behind the border
to give the page more intrigue
and colour.
I then created a new document
with this hat picture, I then used
I then used the
brush to paint on
the stripes, I also
used some pre-
sets;angle jitter and size jitter. This was to
give the hats some randomness in
appearance. I painted these in a darker
pink than the current base colour.
I then added this
text character
which I turned
into a smart layer.
In hisown file I made it greyscale mode and
then back to rgb so that he was in black
and white. I then used the levels
adjustment to really make his shadows
pop. Saving that file changed him in the
main file which I then overlaid pink onto
him so he fit in the image.
FRONT COVER DEVELOPMENT
Here I made some big changes, first I used the cut-out filter (in
filter gallery) to simplify the edges of the character making him
more cartoony, this makes him pop more and he blends with
the back ground in a cool and aesthetical way. To exaggerate
this look more I used a halftone effect with the darken colour
blending option. I then added some rope ladders as they are
associated with exploration , repeating the same effects as
before. Finally I duplicated the text layer which turned pure
white and using the move tool and keyboard arrows I move it
down and to the left.
Finally I replaced the character in the smart layer with a picture of me so that
it now has a clear link to the story, doing this in the smart layer meant that I
dint have to repeat adding the layer effects. I added a barcode to the top
right so that it is hidden out of the way. I also added the story's to my
magazine, the way I did these was by typing them out in a dark purple, I then
duplicated that layer 4 more times and each layer I selected a slightly lighter
colour from the picture of me I then moved each layer more and more down
and to the left. I then grouped the layer and added a slight outer glow
TEXT ON DOUBLE PAGE
First I laid the text
out like this
however it is very
blocky and
uninviting to read.
It also didn’t leave
me with flexible
space for images.
I clearly made yet another drastic change. I
now used space on both pages to incorporate
the text, both pages do have guides of 5x5
inside the margins. Even though they have
these guides I didn’t stick to lining up the rows,
only on the front page though. I used the
space next to the roof graphic to add a minor
title and date for the article this give
information about what the article is about
much more clearly. The text its self is a very
simple font to make reading easy to do, it is
also in white to contrast with the black
background. All text is in a column that is only
one box thick, however this creates problems as
certain words are stretched because the are
two long to fit a word next to them but to short
to reach all the way across the box. Fitting the
text in like this makes it much easier to add
photos the photos are all edited so that the
colour the colour is really bright
EVALUATION
FRONT COVER EVALUATION
There is a very clear difference between
the heading in my proposal and the
final version in a multitude of ways.
First of all the colour scheme has
completely changed from blues and
greens to just a flat pink on white, the
only similarity is that they are flat
colours with no shading. The next
difference is the lack of hard edges
that I described in my proposal, I
clearly opted for a wavy outer edge,
this was so that it looked like it had
imperfections which give an older
more retro aesthetic, much more fitting
for the theme of my magazine. The
corners are also clearly much more
rounded than sharp, this is only
because I thought the font was much
more fitting with the warp I did to the
The title now finished and adapted to fit the theme of my
magazine is much more interesting and attractive than my
first plan in the proposal. The use of two clear colours is
very effective in making it easy to read, the white drop
shadow is just a duplicate layer that I move two steps down
and two steps left. I added the wave so that the title was
different from the majority of mainstream magazines that
just use a thick font that is just the title of the magazine
with no intriguing effects which I think are important as the
heading is the first thing people see. However the title still
isn't perfect because of the warp parts of the text have
been effected and aren't clear letters this is especially
visible on the c which has been squashed, so if I was to do
this again I would make sure that the text has this wave
FRONT COVER EVALUATION
The barcode for my magazine was a problem when it came to
incorporating it in my design, this is because it had a large
contrast to the background colour. My final outcome was to
place it vertically in the top right corner of my magazine, this
worked well as it kept it at a distance from the majority of the
cover. However it can be massively improved as it is still very
clear, I could improve it by incorporating into the actual design
(for example I could have put it within a large area of light colour
so that it doesn't. contrast to its surroundings).Other magazines deal with their barcodes
in different ways, cosmopolitan often
have theirs on the bottom left corner, and
can be either vertical or horizontal so
there approach is very similar to mine.
Time magazines commonly have a white
background, this make s their barcodes
easy to incorporate as it commonly will
not contrast heavily with anything in the
background, so one way I could fix my
problem is having a white background
rather than the shade of grey that I use
High times opt to have a
designated place that there
barcode will always be and
that location is indicated by a
box in the bottom right
corner. This could be an
option for me as it would
mean I wouldn't have to
change my design and
audience's would become
accustomed to it. However
overall it has a negative
FRONT COVER EVALUATION
I created a border for the front cover of the magazine using only three colours,
this was with the intent of creating an area that people will focus on within it.
The border is created using the line and brush tool. The three diagonal lines
were created using the line tool and the hats within were created using the
brush tool, using a brush I had created. The lines vary in size to remove
formality from the design and make it more interesting. I think this border is
great at putting a focus on the main area of the magazine, this is due to its
simplicity, however I could improve the image that I have brushed into the lines,
this is because it isn't clear that it represents a hat that would commonly be
associated with adventurers. Instead I could have used an old camera, this
would also represent the magazines focus much more as it is involved in
photography.
An example of a famous magazine that also incorporates a border into its design is
TIME magazine, this magazine has an iconic and instantly recognisable red border,
this features on every magazine. It is not only a defining feature for the product but
it is also a way of displaying information such as the date of the issue. So there are
improvements I can make to my magazine, I could make the border much bolder so
that it is more noticeable and recognisable.
FRONT COVER EVALUATION
I used a font called Arista 2.0 which came in multiple
variants, I used the thinnest variant for my text. I also
reduced the distance between lines and between
characters to group the text up more. To get the
effect on the left I duplicated the layer and moved it 2
steps down and 2 steps left, I then repeated this 3
more time with three more layers. With ach layer I
then changed it to a shade of pink, the front being
the brightest and the 5th being the lightest. I chose
the pinks based on which pinks were already present
on the cover. This works really well on my cover as
the colours really make the text stand out and the use
of 5 layers give the text a 3D, added with the gradient
it gives the look of a luminescent pink. This
luminescence is further emphasized by the outer
glow behind it. However this effect may not be s
clear on paper as it relies quite heavily on the shine of
a computer screen, this means that normal dull paper
will not represent the effect quite as well. So next
time I create a cover I will have to make sure that the
My magazine deals with cover
lines differently to a lot of
modern magazines like the
one on the left which uses very
flat colours that contrast
heavily with the background.
Whereas mine have a lot of
colour and depth to them. In
comparison even though mine
a more interesting more basic
colours are much easier to
read so I will have to improve
upon how easy it is to read my
FRONT COVER EVALUATION
This is the complete cover of my magazine. It is completely different from my plan
in colour and in design, I first planned for the cover to blue and green. However
during production I changed this to this much more contrasting colour scheme
(pink and dark grey). The change made the primary magazine colour much
brighter and clear, this makes the paper have a luminescent aesthetic. However it I
also very simple with a small number of different shades, 5 to be exact. This
makes the image much clearer, for example areas with deep shadows are grey but
as an area gets lighter it will average a large area and use one of the shades of
purple that is the right darkness for the area. Averaging is where it matches lots of
colours up and creates one solid colour for that area, to get this effect I used the
cut-out effect in filter gallery. I repeated this effect on a rope ladder as it is
associated with old adventuring films, however I used the ladder for a different
approach rather than just as something to attract people to the magazine. I used
it to create depth and make it look as though the stories are on top of each step. I
think the colour scheme and layout of my stories works well, the colours work well
because it is very abstract which will catch people attention, and the layout of the
stories is good because each one is clearly different and it makes the magazine
more presentable. However I could improve where the text overlaps other parts of
the magazine cover as all parts are a shade of pink so in some places the text and
border or text and person appear to merge, this can make the stories hard to read.
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD EVALUATION
When I first created the graphic on the left page I used
orange rather than pink, however like before I did not believe
this to very bright or eye catching, it had a very boring look. I
used the squiggly lines to indicate smoke coming out of the
chimney, my reason for this because smoking chimneys are
considered old as many people opt for electric ones in
modern times. However if I didn this again I would need to
change how the smoke is laid out rather than have it just bulk
out in one spot even if it is an area for text. The chimney was
drawn using illustrator as it gave me clearer edges as it is
vector based, however I then moved it into Photoshop, it still
looked better than if I had drawn it in Photoshop only. I then
coloured it orange, which I then changed to the pink. I
believe that the colouring came out very well and I have
presented shadows very well using different shades and
adding a light layer over certain areas. However if I was to
change anything it would be the drawing its self as on
completing it I have realised that it is not an accurate
representation as the angle on the furthest right wall is
different to the ones on the chimney.
The title of the article is also very
easy to read, I chose a retro steam
punk font to further indicate that my
article was about buildings past there
prime. I made the text very clear by
creating an outline with the cloud
lines. However if I did it again I
would make the text bolder rather
than only an outline of an actual font,
so that it stands out from the rest of
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD EVALUATION
After I had created the firsts page with the graphics I had to create the
text and images for the magazine. When writing the article I focussed
heavily on what the history of the building was and how it had come to
being abandoned, I talked bout key owners and who last owned it. The
article based on historical facts was interesting especially to read about
the owners own problems and the mistakes that Leeds council made
with the property. However if I was to write this article again I would
have written much more about what it was like inside as I didn’t at all in
this article. I feel as though an article that talked more about the inside
would be much more interesting to the demographic I had planned the
magazine to be for. The images are whole different story as they are all
of the inside which is great because I do not believe people in my
planned demographic would have wanted to see what it used to look
like. When editing the photos I made them vibrant with a lot of contrast,
I removed a lot of the white and I also deepened the shadows. This was
so that the images fit in with the page more, it also makes the quality of
the image look more crisp. I think the images work really well as they
show lots of different parts of the building whilst still also looking
interesting. If I was to change anything it may be that I adjusted the hue
of the orange so that it was more pink, this would be easy to change
The text was done using a
white font so that it clearly
stood out from the
background, the font is not
fancy like the page title, this
works well as it makes
everything much easier to
read. However if I was going
to change anything it would
be the layout on the first
page as it doesn't follow the
same guides as the second
page making it look less
WEBSITE EVALUATION
The primary feature for my website would be the background and the header. Both have the same theme
as my magazine, it is pink on black. The title uses the same logo and is right in the centre of my header,
this works well as it is clear and unobstructed, it also has a practice use as you are able to use it as link
back to the homepage. There are 3 other titles; pictures, magazine, contact us. These all take you to one of
the other pages on the website, magazine and pictures are larger than the contact us button as they are
more important to the website. The separate links are all done in the same style as the sub stories on my
magazine. The look I created for the header works well as it is vibrant using pink on black, so is able to
have a very practical use whilst remaining aesthetical pleasing. The background is very similar to the stripes
on my magazine, the main background is the grey I have used throughout the magazine, but in front of
this is shape. I created brushes for music notes and cameras for example, in stripes on the grey I then
painted them on, 5 different rows. This creates quite a unique look and means that the magazine doesn’t
just have a flat colored background. Unlike other sites in the genre such as
(https://www.theurbanexplorer.co.uk/) which uses a very flat background, this is very boring, it doesn’t
have any link to the magazine and doesn’t make you engaged in the site as it doesn’t have appeal.
However my background isn’t perfect so if I was to do it again id have to make sure that the background
scales properly on different computers as at the minute it will get stretch on large monitors which is not
aesthetically pleasing. I would also make sure that the images that I painted on had a bigger link to the
WEBSITE EVALUATION
The homepage has a very simple purpose on my website, however it works well to give key bits of
information about the website. The purpose of the homepage is much like that of cover lines on the
magazine front, they are there to draw people into buying our magazine. I used the same font as I did
in the header however I made it bolder so that is more in your face when you open the website. I also
changed the colour of “only £sixty” as it emphasizes it, the use of “only” gets people really engaged in a
subject as they perceive it as a small amount of money for what you're getting. The three headers
rotate constantly giving you enough time to read it. If I was to improve the website here however would
be to give some more information about what you will find on the website, for example I could have
added some previous articles from the magazines that have already come out, this would add more
interest, it would also help sell the magazine which is the purpose of the website. This idea is very
similar to the website on the right. Even though it isn't to sell a magazineit is focussed on exploring old abandoned buildings so has the same style
articles as the one I wrote. As you can see rather than having a big eye-
catching font they focus on the articles, this attracts the audience in a way
that intrigues them as they want to find out more. So I could do this next
time by adding small articles at the bottom of my homepage.
WEBSITE EVALUATION
The purpose of the magazine page is to get people to
subscribe to the physical copy. I started by adding the
latest magazine cover to the page, this was to show that
the website and magazine are similar so you will get the
same style of content on both. This works well as it
means that when people look at the website and get
intrigued they know that they can get more content, that
is the same, in the magazine. However I do need to make an improvement here as the actual edge of the magazine isn't clear, this is
due to both backgrounds being the same colour, so if I were to change anything I would add a drop
shadow to the magazine. This is because it doesn't take away from the image like a border would and
it also make it much clearer. I also used the same style font as I did in the header here as well. I used it
for titles on the page. However these need a lot of improvement as they are clearly different from all
previous ones. They are too bold for this and the outer glow is too strong, this makes them quite hard
to read. I then added the first half of the article I had written, this had the purpose of showing people
what they were getting in the magazine, but at the same time it doesn't just give them the whole thing,
so as people are interested and want to know more they end up buying the magazine. I did this well as
the text is clear to read and it is also fits with the aesthetic of the website as the text is in a dark grey
WEBSITE EVALUATION
The photos page of my website is used to advertise more to
people who enjoy photography rather than knowing about the
buildings themselves. I did this by creating 4 galleries and
adding pictures to each, each would be based in different
location. I edited all the photos the same way, editing them all
to be the same works well as it forms a link between the
images so that none of them look out ofplace on the website. I edited them so that they had darker shadows, this was so that there was a lot
of blacks to contrast the vibrancy of all of the other colours, I also increased the contrast to boost this
effect. In the fourth gallery I have got text that says more will be coming soon, this works well to get
people coming back to my website to look at new photos. However I would completely the layout of
the text inside, I would instead make them all the same font rather than different ones, I would then
repeat the technique I use for the other vibrant font on the website. I added text underneath each
photo to give a small amount of information about what the building is called and where it is found, I
then repeated the text for aesthetic effect, this works well as it give the page a unique aesthetic that
looks quite formal and laid out. However I would fix it so that each block of text had the same pattern
so that none of them look out of place. This is very similar to the websiteon the right as it has a focus on photos, however mine is much more
aesthetically pleasing and there is more focus on how the photos look,
rather than just to show the inside of the buildings.
WEBSITE EVALUATION
The point of the contact page is to get the audience more
engaged in your magazine, it builds more of a connection
between the magazine and the person as they are able to send in
suggestions and photos. This works really well as the more an
audience is engaged the more the word spreads about your
product. I made this page very simple so that it was easy to
understand. I created a contacts box, it is on the right, itonly has 4 boxes, I made them all pink so that it stood out and was clear. This works well as it is clear but
it is still easy to see the white font on top of it so people will have no problem typing on it. Next to that I
put links to social media, this is because it is important in modern times to grow through the use of social
media as it is one of the fastest way to do so. However these icons are in the wrong colour so I would
definitely change that if I was to recreate this website. Finally I added a paragraph about what people
should send in, I did this so that there was a form of conversation between creator and audience again. I
also did the heading in the same style as i had done on the photo page. This works well on the website as
it follows the same theme throughout. To build contact with my audience I use direct address, this means
I use terms such as ”you”, this is effective as it is much more personal for the reader, this causes them to
be much more engaged.

On the cover they use two different fonts. The masthead at the top of page, is thin with sharp edges, this makes the cover aesthetically pleasing and appealing to a modern audience, it also matches that it is a very small amount of information. Especially in comparison to the block of text at the bottom of the page which is bolder and uses a more formal font style, this matches the text because there is more information. Overall he text however overall is not very large as the main attraction to this cover, is instead the photo of the desert. Photos in this magazine are clearly the most important part as text never covers major parts of photos but is instead normally in a place where there is very little change in colour, e.g. the sky.In the rest of the magazine there is more text than there are photos, however on the pages shown it is 1:1 as for every image there is text to go with it. However even though there is more text images will normally take the priority, as they will normally take a large proportion of space on the page, and text will normally just be used to explain the photo in a very formal way. Photos in the magazine are normally very colorful and eye catching, however white is also used to give the magazine a theme that runs throughout it.

This is very similar to the text at the bottom of the image. On the cover of the magazine it uses a direct address and talks directly to the reader using ‘You’ and ‘Your’, this builds up more of a connection between the reader and author. The cover also has bright using a light pinks and blue on either side of a woman's face. There are also two blobs in the top corner these are used to draw attention to a certain area and emphasizes it. Both blobs use money to draw people into the magazine, one draws people in with the appeal of winning a large sum of money while the uses the word free. Both of these are in large fonts compared to the rest of the sentences, they are also in white which is verycontrasting to the colourful backgrounds of the blobs. There are many more photos inside of the magazine than there is blocks of text, text will also never come as a priority over images, however it will be worked into the image like on the left where they didn't just use black text they used white so it feels more incorporated into the image. The images themselves are basic, thus is so they appeal to a much broader audience of beginner photographers who see the photos as much more achievable. The magazine also backs this up by using direct address when it says your images can be on the disk as it makes the audience feel like they are able

I S S U U The cover for this magazine is very bold and has a lot of text around it, the text is very simple and doesn't give any significant information out other than that you can find more out in the magazine. The text is bold to draw attention to it, also because it is appealing to an audience that like bold shooters; young people. The title uses a very simple font and doesn't have any capitalization this is also so that it appeals to a younger audience, as they have much less care for the lack of punctuation compared to someone who is much more mature, who may see it as informal. There is also a blob on the cover which is used to emphasize another piece of information. The cover also uses a color scheme which matches to that of the title of the game they are using on there front cover, this is to create a link to the two things. On the inside of the magazine it is quite different to the cover as it trades small amounts of text to instead have a long reviews of the games inside. This is much less appealing to the younger audience as they are much less willing to read big blocks of text. However there are still lots of images inside which they will find much more appealing. The font used inside is very simple but clear and easy to read, it is quite a small font unless a certain part is trying to be emphasized. The colour scheme of the cover also runs trough the magazine giving it a clear theme, which makes it appear much more formal.

Magazine uses a lot of bold colors as its primary way to appeal to an audience, it also uses very feminine colors such as pinks and yellows. The main text on the cover is the cover lines which tell the audience what is in the magazine, however the actual title of the magazine is mostly covered by images, which gives the impression that magazine cares more about image than the actual text. The cover also uses many bubbles and bullets to separate the different stories but also to make sure that people see each different story. The inside of the magazines very similar as it is primarily large photos with very minimal amount of text, however the text is normally very bold to make it seem as though the photo is of importance. The magazine is also littered with lots of different adverts, so the magazine is very informal. The Ok website is very similar as it uses lots of photos which hint at something happening, which is then backed up by a catchy header that is slightly misleading. However the website is very dull in comparison to the bright colors of the magazine, instead using greys and red. The layout is also more simple and is laid out in columns rather than different shaped boxes which are more intriguing
  • 6. RESEARCHH T T P S : / / W W W . Q T H E M U S I C . C O M Q website is laid out in a very clear manner where everything is clearly accessible. The top of the page is clearly laid out as the header where you are able to access other parts of the Q website, it is very minimal s it is just a black header with the Q logo and the tabs are just white text. Down the right side of the website the space is used for adverts and to show off the latest magazine. The website uses the same font and colors that it uses on its magazine, this creates a clear theme through their products. Lower down the page they have articles, they are all an image to give light understanding of the story it is then followed by a vague but intriguing title to draw people in. The articles all vary in size but it is clear that they aim there magazine at a more mature audience.Inside one of the magazines it is very appealing for more mature audiences as pages are usually filled with small text. One page has a large intriguing photo of a famous artist that people will easily recognize. The second page with information on also has a large red letter underneath the much smaller text, it is always the first initial of the artist. This is to link to the artist but also to link to the magazines overall theme, this is because it uses the same font as there logo, it is the inverse way round as the logo is a white Q on way red background.
  • 7. PRACTICE WORK EVALUATION PAGE 1 On day one we learnt how to use tools within InDesign to create magazines, I used the skills to create the two page spread (left) and layout a website. The skills we learnt; how to create boxes, add text, wrap text, place images, create columns, create rows and how to manipulate text. First off we had to create columns and rows these help create a theme through the magazine so that everything lines up perfectly, you can see this in my image as images and text are in the same size areas. When I started the double page spread I decide that columns would be 5 by 5 on each page Even larger areas of photo andtext still fit inside the columns and rows I created, they just cover multiple ones. First I laid out where images were going and then added them to the magazine. To do this I first had to create empty boxes, then I had to open Photoshop and create an image that was the same size as the box that I just created on InDesign. I would then save this image as a jpeg, move back to InDesign, select the box and then press cmd + D to place the image in the box, alternatively I could have gone to edit – place. After I had done this with the images I added text, to do this you have to draw a text box with the text tool, however I had to draw multiple so I could fit the text in. When a box overflows you need to use the select tool and click a red box at the bottom of the text box which gives you a prompt to choose where you want the overflowing text to go. When you have got the text you need you can then manipulate it so that it stands out and is eye catching, you can remove hyphenation in text boxes, change the space between words , change eight of letters, make it so that paragraphs stretch to the edges of the text boxes.
  • 8. PRACTICE WORK EVALUATION PAGE 2 On the same day I also practiced creating a website, to start with I created 8 columns, no rows however. Leaving out columns meant that I was able to make images any size vertically that I wanted them to be. In this design I decided to go with a black and white theme, I created the boxes I wanted for the images, I planned to add text to the page however I never got time, the text would have been in the middle as I was leaving the outer column's empty. With these two pages there are things that could be improved. On the website I haven't lined everything up perfectly as at the top in the banner the icons and links to other parts of the site sit in the margins between columns, so I would move these more central to the columns they are supposed to be in. I do however like the variation in the size of images that I have used, this because it adds variation to the page, it also allows there to be emphasis on certain pictures. On the double page spread I would change the large fonts that I used, I used them because it matched the font that I used in the largest image, however this had a negative impact on the rest of the page as the font didn't match the quite formal layout I chose. However even though my layout is quite formal there is a big variation in the size of text boxes that I used which was primarily due to the fact that my pages didn't have an even number of boxes on them, but this means that the page in tern wasn't a boring block of text.
  • 9. Working Title: DERELICT – This is the title of the magazine as it perfectly encapsulates what the magazine is about, it is about me exploring and photographing run down buildings. Ideas for these places are a library (Leeds), a Hotel (Leeds), Orphanage (Bramham), school (adel), Office (Halifax), Iron Works (menston). The colour scheme for the logo will be either a flat colour or a mix of greens and blues, probably a dark blue and a light green. The font will be a bold but have very sharp edges and corners. Audience: I will target my magazine at men between the age 15-25 as it is about exploring old buildings, stereotypically this would be more appealing to this audience as it involves going in dirty places that require you to have to climb about to find more places to photograph. The young age is because this is the period people are seen to be fittest and most energetic. My magazine will be aimed at c1 and c2 social class, as people in this class have money to be able to buy cameras but also wont be the most educated. If they have bought cameras they will some form of interest in what I am saying in the magazine, them being less educated than higher classes as well means that I don’t have to talk as formally in my magazine, this means I can be more personal as I am not out of my comfort zone. The psychograph my magazine is aimed at people who are needs driven as I will write about going out on impulse and taking photos and how there doesn't have to be any major planning relating to exploration. However it will also appeal to want to bees as I will talk about how to use the photos to make you look like you have a cool life even if you don’t. My magazine will be a mix between entertainment and informative. As entertainment it will be showing off the photos I take and will tell interesting stories about the places that I have visited and how long they have been derelict, it will be informative as I will talk about how I took the images and how I'm able to get into these places. So this will appeal to people who want to escape from their reality and experience the life of someone else. My magazine will be regionally based as I will be talking about buildings in a certain area, It will only be out in places near where I visited so that people would be able to go there themselves easily without much travel. Rationale (approx. 100 words) I will be able to use my skills that I have learnt from Photoshop to create my magazine, as I am very capable of using a range of effects and styles within Photoshop. I created a print advert for the brand IRN BRU which required me to use a large range of these techniques such as masks, gradients, filters, saturations and I even created my own brushes, I will be able to use my knowledge of adobe suits to help when I use in design. I also have knowledge within the topic of my magazine as I very passionate about going exploring so have practice when it comes to photographing and talking about these places. Project Concept (approx. 200 words) The magazine that I will be making will be talking about abandoned places that I have visited and photographed. I will be talking in detail about how I got into the places a long with a backstory to inform people the history of the buildings and what has caused them to be left derelict. So I will have to do research to find who previously in habited buildings, as it may be a company or a person, also I will need to know what happened to these people. This means that before I start my magazine I will have to research new places to go into, I also need to find out if there is any value in going as not all are worth the travel. Which is another thing I need to find out, as travel is important information especially if there is no value in going. It is also important to tell the readers how much climbing is necessary as this will put many people off going to these places if they hard or very unsafe to get into, however the more unsafe it is the more interesting the magazine is so for entertainment this can be exaggerated to build suspense. Evaluation (approx. 50 words) First of all I will be doing a weekly review of how the project is going overall and what improvements I have been doing each week. However when I have finished the project I will be doing a questionnaire, this will help me see what I missed out from

  • 11. COLOUR IDEAS The colour scheme that is on the left is a collection of off whites and different shades of blues. The biggest range of colour comes from the two blues which have a big range of shades that work well together. The off whites however do not have clear shades and both look very similar as well. I then used this colours to create a mock up of what my double page background could looklike if they are what I used. I used the blues primarily creating the stripe pattern but then complimented the outlines with a larger off white stripe through them all. However this colour scheme doesn't really represent old things and gives the feeling that magazine is more about baby boys. This colour scheme has slightly larger range of colours and shades. I have got one colour that is the focus in the 4 colours and this time it is a green. However the other colours are not as similar as the previous one, this time I have got an off white again but also gone for a pink as well, both however have much clearer shades. I used the colours to then create the same mock up asbefore, I made the primary colour green and then mixed the pink and off white colour to create the stripe that goes behind. These colours are much better at representing what my magazine is about. The double page has a retro feel which is old, this is perfect as my magazine is about an old abandoned house.
  • 12. FONT IDEAS These fonts all have a very similar style, they all are calligraphy/hand written fonts. This style of font would be used to invite people in as it is seen as very personal and informal. These style of fonts would work well on the cover of my magazine as the masthead as the soft feeling would go well with the planned aesthetic I'm going for. The Super Natural font would work well on my double page spread as it looks more rigid and rushed than the others so I can make it fit in with the smoke graphic I plan to use. This font is very minimal and would work well as the masthead as it has a very modern feel which will make the coveraesthetically pleasing and minimal which is the style I'm going for. However the font is very thin so would be hard to read as a block of text. This font has a retro sci-fi effect to it, so even though my magazine is about old buildings this font would beGreat on a magazine cover as it is clear to read but is still eye catching, would be mostly used as text for the cover stories.
  • 13. MOCK UPS On the left side of the page will be a large image with very limited amounts of colour, this will cover the majority of the page. In front of this there will be lots of little images, these will all be images that I have taken. Each image will look like it is in fires as if it is coming out of the chimney. The second page will be primarily text with two more images in the top left corner. This text may be about the history of the building, it will also be about how I got into the building and why I took certain photos. I'm going to have a colour theme that is exactly the same on my cover and my double page spread as this creates a clear link between the two. I think I will use orange and black, this is because the two colours create and old looking aesthetic. The front cove will be primarily occupied by a large image that will link to the main double page article, it will also be colour overlaid to be the colour of the over all theme. The masthead will be an a bold font that has a think white drop shadow to give it some depth, however the text will be behind the larger image. The story's will be in a smaller, thinner font that the mast head but will have the same drop shadow effect, however unlike the masthead the text will go over the top of the larger image, this makes it easier to read as you can see the whole text. The background will be black so that it is contrasting , this makes the text much clearer as it is very contrasting.
  • 14. DOUBLE PAGE GRAPHIC PRODUCTION First I drew out the basic shape of the roof and chimney on Photoshop using different brush sizes I Then transferred the drawing into illustrator where I used the line to create the thicker lines and a then used to brush tool to create bricks that have smoother lines as illustrator smooths all lines out I then took the image back into Photoshop where I added two base colours to the image, two different shades of orange. These were bases which I would then use to add shading to. I then added other colour to show bricks adding more detail to the image. I then used the brush tool with white on the left edges of the roof to make it look as though light was hitting it.I did the same with black on the right to make it look as if it was a shadow, I lowered the opacity of these so it wasn't to over whelming. I finally added a 15 pixel stroke in orange to show clear difference from the image the background. Each different colour is on a separate layer so that each was easy to go and edit.
  • 15. DOUBLE PAGE GRAPHIC PRODUCTION I then proceeded to creat smoke clouds on illustrator leaving a large area for my page title to go. It is made up of simple wavy lines drawn using the brush tool.I then dragged this into photoshop where I left the main colour as black but added a clear orange outline to link it to the chimneys overall design. I then added the title which I use a font called “Triumph Wheels” this font works well as it is very retro and old, which is the feeling I was going for as I wrote about an old abandoned building. I also added a light blue background as pure white was confusing to the eye as you never expect to see a building with no colour behind it.The final page is a complete U-turn on most of the previous developments. Firstly the most obvious difference is the colour change to black and pink. This process took time as I had to re colour the house. The reason for the change is that the colouring before was boring and not very eye catching, this was a large improvement. Smaller change is that there is no longer any colour splodges in the text which there was before, I removed this by colouring in the centre to remove the stroke that was
  • 16. FRONT COVER DEVELOPMENT First I created the background with a thin border. Instead of making it orange as planned I went for pink as it now matched the double page. I then added to the mast head and I used the font “Cooper std” as it is clear and has an old aesthetic. I used the filter ripple to make the edges wavy and I used warp to give it the wave effect. I then added three lines in different sizes behind the border to give the page more intrigue and colour. I then created a new document with this hat picture, I then used I then used the brush to paint on the stripes, I also used some pre- sets;angle jitter and size jitter. This was to give the hats some randomness in appearance. I painted these in a darker pink than the current base colour. I then added this text character which I turned into a smart layer. In hisown file I made it greyscale mode and then back to rgb so that he was in black and white. I then used the levels adjustment to really make his shadows pop. Saving that file changed him in the main file which I then overlaid pink onto him so he fit in the image.
  • 17. FRONT COVER DEVELOPMENT Here I made some big changes, first I used the cut-out filter (in filter gallery) to simplify the edges of the character making him more cartoony, this makes him pop more and he blends with the back ground in a cool and aesthetical way. To exaggerate this look more I used a halftone effect with the darken colour blending option. I then added some rope ladders as they are associated with exploration , repeating the same effects as before. Finally I duplicated the text layer which turned pure white and using the move tool and keyboard arrows I move it down and to the left. Finally I replaced the character in the smart layer with a picture of me so that it now has a clear link to the story, doing this in the smart layer meant that I dint have to repeat adding the layer effects. I added a barcode to the top right so that it is hidden out of the way. I also added the story's to my magazine, the way I did these was by typing them out in a dark purple, I then duplicated that layer 4 more times and each layer I selected a slightly lighter colour from the picture of me I then moved each layer more and more down and to the left. I then grouped the layer and added a slight outer glow
  • 18. TEXT ON DOUBLE PAGE First I laid the text out like this however it is very blocky and uninviting to read. It also didn’t leave me with flexible space for images. I clearly made yet another drastic change. I now used space on both pages to incorporate the text, both pages do have guides of 5x5 inside the margins. Even though they have these guides I didn’t stick to lining up the rows, only on the front page though. I used the space next to the roof graphic to add a minor title and date for the article this give information about what the article is about much more clearly. The text its self is a very simple font to make reading easy to do, it is also in white to contrast with the black background. All text is in a column that is only one box thick, however this creates problems as certain words are stretched because the are two long to fit a word next to them but to short to reach all the way across the box. Fitting the text in like this makes it much easier to add photos the photos are all edited so that the colour the colour is really bright
  • 20. FRONT COVER EVALUATION There is a very clear difference between the heading in my proposal and the final version in a multitude of ways. First of all the colour scheme has completely changed from blues and greens to just a flat pink on white, the only similarity is that they are flat colours with no shading. The next difference is the lack of hard edges that I described in my proposal, I clearly opted for a wavy outer edge, this was so that it looked like it had imperfections which give an older more retro aesthetic, much more fitting for the theme of my magazine. The corners are also clearly much more rounded than sharp, this is only because I thought the font was much more fitting with the warp I did to the The title now finished and adapted to fit the theme of my magazine is much more interesting and attractive than my first plan in the proposal. The use of two clear colours is very effective in making it easy to read, the white drop shadow is just a duplicate layer that I move two steps down and two steps left. I added the wave so that the title was different from the majority of mainstream magazines that just use a thick font that is just the title of the magazine with no intriguing effects which I think are important as the heading is the first thing people see. However the title still isn't perfect because of the warp parts of the text have been effected and aren't clear letters this is especially visible on the c which has been squashed, so if I was to do this again I would make sure that the text has this wave
  • 21. FRONT COVER EVALUATION The barcode for my magazine was a problem when it came to incorporating it in my design, this is because it had a large contrast to the background colour. My final outcome was to place it vertically in the top right corner of my magazine, this worked well as it kept it at a distance from the majority of the cover. However it can be massively improved as it is still very clear, I could improve it by incorporating into the actual design (for example I could have put it within a large area of light colour so that it doesn't. contrast to its surroundings).Other magazines deal with their barcodes in different ways, cosmopolitan often have theirs on the bottom left corner, and can be either vertical or horizontal so there approach is very similar to mine. Time magazines commonly have a white background, this make s their barcodes easy to incorporate as it commonly will not contrast heavily with anything in the background, so one way I could fix my problem is having a white background rather than the shade of grey that I use High times opt to have a designated place that there barcode will always be and that location is indicated by a box in the bottom right corner. This could be an option for me as it would mean I wouldn't have to change my design and audience's would become accustomed to it. However overall it has a negative
  • 22. FRONT COVER EVALUATION I created a border for the front cover of the magazine using only three colours, this was with the intent of creating an area that people will focus on within it. The border is created using the line and brush tool. The three diagonal lines were created using the line tool and the hats within were created using the brush tool, using a brush I had created. The lines vary in size to remove formality from the design and make it more interesting. I think this border is great at putting a focus on the main area of the magazine, this is due to its simplicity, however I could improve the image that I have brushed into the lines, this is because it isn't clear that it represents a hat that would commonly be associated with adventurers. Instead I could have used an old camera, this would also represent the magazines focus much more as it is involved in photography. An example of a famous magazine that also incorporates a border into its design is TIME magazine, this magazine has an iconic and instantly recognisable red border, this features on every magazine. It is not only a defining feature for the product but it is also a way of displaying information such as the date of the issue. So there are improvements I can make to my magazine, I could make the border much bolder so that it is more noticeable and recognisable.
  • 23. FRONT COVER EVALUATION I used a font called Arista 2.0 which came in multiple variants, I used the thinnest variant for my text. I also reduced the distance between lines and between characters to group the text up more. To get the effect on the left I duplicated the layer and moved it 2 steps down and 2 steps left, I then repeated this 3 more time with three more layers. With ach layer I then changed it to a shade of pink, the front being the brightest and the 5th being the lightest. I chose the pinks based on which pinks were already present on the cover. This works really well on my cover as the colours really make the text stand out and the use of 5 layers give the text a 3D, added with the gradient it gives the look of a luminescent pink. This luminescence is further emphasized by the outer glow behind it. However this effect may not be s clear on paper as it relies quite heavily on the shine of a computer screen, this means that normal dull paper will not represent the effect quite as well. So next time I create a cover I will have to make sure that the My magazine deals with cover lines differently to a lot of modern magazines like the one on the left which uses very flat colours that contrast heavily with the background. Whereas mine have a lot of colour and depth to them. In comparison even though mine a more interesting more basic colours are much easier to read so I will have to improve upon how easy it is to read my
  • 24. FRONT COVER EVALUATION This is the complete cover of my magazine. It is completely different from my plan in colour and in design, I first planned for the cover to blue and green. However during production I changed this to this much more contrasting colour scheme (pink and dark grey). The change made the primary magazine colour much brighter and clear, this makes the paper have a luminescent aesthetic. However it I also very simple with a small number of different shades, 5 to be exact. This makes the image much clearer, for example areas with deep shadows are grey but as an area gets lighter it will average a large area and use one of the shades of purple that is the right darkness for the area. Averaging is where it matches lots of colours up and creates one solid colour for that area, to get this effect I used the cut-out effect in filter gallery. I repeated this effect on a rope ladder as it is associated with old adventuring films, however I used the ladder for a different approach rather than just as something to attract people to the magazine. I used it to create depth and make it look as though the stories are on top of each step. I think the colour scheme and layout of my stories works well, the colours work well because it is very abstract which will catch people attention, and the layout of the stories is good because each one is clearly different and it makes the magazine more presentable. However I could improve where the text overlaps other parts of the magazine cover as all parts are a shade of pink so in some places the text and border or text and person appear to merge, this can make the stories hard to read.
  • 25. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD EVALUATION When I first created the graphic on the left page I used orange rather than pink, however like before I did not believe this to very bright or eye catching, it had a very boring look. I used the squiggly lines to indicate smoke coming out of the chimney, my reason for this because smoking chimneys are considered old as many people opt for electric ones in modern times. However if I didn this again I would need to change how the smoke is laid out rather than have it just bulk out in one spot even if it is an area for text. The chimney was drawn using illustrator as it gave me clearer edges as it is vector based, however I then moved it into Photoshop, it still looked better than if I had drawn it in Photoshop only. I then coloured it orange, which I then changed to the pink. I believe that the colouring came out very well and I have presented shadows very well using different shades and adding a light layer over certain areas. However if I was to change anything it would be the drawing its self as on completing it I have realised that it is not an accurate representation as the angle on the furthest right wall is different to the ones on the chimney. The title of the article is also very easy to read, I chose a retro steam punk font to further indicate that my article was about buildings past there prime. I made the text very clear by creating an outline with the cloud lines. However if I did it again I would make the text bolder rather than only an outline of an actual font, so that it stands out from the rest of
  • 26. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD EVALUATION After I had created the firsts page with the graphics I had to create the text and images for the magazine. When writing the article I focussed heavily on what the history of the building was and how it had come to being abandoned, I talked bout key owners and who last owned it. The article based on historical facts was interesting especially to read about the owners own problems and the mistakes that Leeds council made with the property. However if I was to write this article again I would have written much more about what it was like inside as I didn’t at all in this article. I feel as though an article that talked more about the inside would be much more interesting to the demographic I had planned the magazine to be for. The images are whole different story as they are all of the inside which is great because I do not believe people in my planned demographic would have wanted to see what it used to look like. When editing the photos I made them vibrant with a lot of contrast, I removed a lot of the white and I also deepened the shadows. This was so that the images fit in with the page more, it also makes the quality of the image look more crisp. I think the images work really well as they show lots of different parts of the building whilst still also looking interesting. If I was to change anything it may be that I adjusted the hue of the orange so that it was more pink, this would be easy to change The text was done using a white font so that it clearly stood out from the background, the font is not fancy like the page title, this works well as it makes everything much easier to read. However if I was going to change anything it would be the layout on the first page as it doesn't follow the same guides as the second page making it look less
  • 27. WEBSITE EVALUATION The primary feature for my website would be the background and the header. Both have the same theme as my magazine, it is pink on black. The title uses the same logo and is right in the centre of my header, this works well as it is clear and unobstructed, it also has a practice use as you are able to use it as link back to the homepage. There are 3 other titles; pictures, magazine, contact us. These all take you to one of the other pages on the website, magazine and pictures are larger than the contact us button as they are more important to the website. The separate links are all done in the same style as the sub stories on my magazine. The look I created for the header works well as it is vibrant using pink on black, so is able to have a very practical use whilst remaining aesthetical pleasing. The background is very similar to the stripes on my magazine, the main background is the grey I have used throughout the magazine, but in front of this is shape. I created brushes for music notes and cameras for example, in stripes on the grey I then painted them on, 5 different rows. This creates quite a unique look and means that the magazine doesn’t just have a flat colored background. Unlike other sites in the genre such as (https://www.theurbanexplorer.co.uk/) which uses a very flat background, this is very boring, it doesn’t have any link to the magazine and doesn’t make you engaged in the site as it doesn’t have appeal. However my background isn’t perfect so if I was to do it again id have to make sure that the background scales properly on different computers as at the minute it will get stretch on large monitors which is not aesthetically pleasing. I would also make sure that the images that I painted on had a bigger link to the
  • 28. WEBSITE EVALUATION The homepage has a very simple purpose on my website, however it works well to give key bits of information about the website. The purpose of the homepage is much like that of cover lines on the magazine front, they are there to draw people into buying our magazine. I used the same font as I did in the header however I made it bolder so that is more in your face when you open the website. I also changed the colour of “only £sixty” as it emphasizes it, the use of “only” gets people really engaged in a subject as they perceive it as a small amount of money for what you're getting. The three headers rotate constantly giving you enough time to read it. If I was to improve the website here however would be to give some more information about what you will find on the website, for example I could have added some previous articles from the magazines that have already come out, this would add more interest, it would also help sell the magazine which is the purpose of the website. This idea is very similar to the website on the right. Even though it isn't to sell a magazineit is focussed on exploring old abandoned buildings so has the same style articles as the one I wrote. As you can see rather than having a big eye- catching font they focus on the articles, this attracts the audience in a way that intrigues them as they want to find out more. So I could do this next time by adding small articles at the bottom of my homepage.
  • 29. WEBSITE EVALUATION The purpose of the magazine page is to get people to subscribe to the physical copy. I started by adding the latest magazine cover to the page, this was to show that the website and magazine are similar so you will get the same style of content on both. This works well as it means that when people look at the website and get intrigued they know that they can get more content, that is the same, in the magazine. However I do need to make an improvement here as the actual edge of the magazine isn't clear, this is due to both backgrounds being the same colour, so if I were to change anything I would add a drop shadow to the magazine. This is because it doesn't take away from the image like a border would and it also make it much clearer. I also used the same style font as I did in the header here as well. I used it for titles on the page. However these need a lot of improvement as they are clearly different from all previous ones. They are too bold for this and the outer glow is too strong, this makes them quite hard to read. I then added the first half of the article I had written, this had the purpose of showing people what they were getting in the magazine, but at the same time it doesn't just give them the whole thing, so as people are interested and want to know more they end up buying the magazine. I did this well as the text is clear to read and it is also fits with the aesthetic of the website as the text is in a dark grey
  • 30. WEBSITE EVALUATION The photos page of my website is used to advertise more to people who enjoy photography rather than knowing about the buildings themselves. I did this by creating 4 galleries and adding pictures to each, each would be based in different location. I edited all the photos the same way, editing them all to be the same works well as it forms a link between the images so that none of them look out ofplace on the website. I edited them so that they had darker shadows, this was so that there was a lot of blacks to contrast the vibrancy of all of the other colours, I also increased the contrast to boost this effect. In the fourth gallery I have got text that says more will be coming soon, this works well to get people coming back to my website to look at new photos. However I would completely the layout of the text inside, I would instead make them all the same font rather than different ones, I would then repeat the technique I use for the other vibrant font on the website. I added text underneath each photo to give a small amount of information about what the building is called and where it is found, I then repeated the text for aesthetic effect, this works well as it give the page a unique aesthetic that looks quite formal and laid out. However I would fix it so that each block of text had the same pattern so that none of them look out of place. This is very similar to the websiteon the right as it has a focus on photos, however mine is much more aesthetically pleasing and there is more focus on how the photos look, rather than just to show the inside of the buildings.
  • 31. WEBSITE EVALUATION The point of the contact page is to get the audience more engaged in your magazine, it builds more of a connection between the magazine and the person as they are able to send in suggestions and photos. This works really well as the more an audience is engaged the more the word spreads about your product. I made this page very simple so that it was easy to understand. I created a contacts box, it is on the right, itonly has 4 boxes, I made them all pink so that it stood out and was clear. This works well as it is clear but it is still easy to see the white font on top of it so people will have no problem typing on it. Next to that I put links to social media, this is because it is important in modern times to grow through the use of social media as it is one of the fastest way to do so. However these icons are in the wrong colour so I would definitely change that if I was to recreate this website. Finally I added a paragraph about what people should send in, I did this so that there was a form of conversation between creator and audience again. I also did the heading in the same style as i had done on the photo page. This works well on the website as it follows the same theme throughout. To build contact with my audience I use direct address, this means I use terms such as ”you”, this is effective as it is much more personal for the reader, this causes them to be much more engaged.
