East Texas Fishing Report
By Matt Williams
Tribune correspondent
BOB SANDLIN - Water
level is 1.59 feet low and
fairly clear. Water temp in
the upper 40s.
Fishing guide Jay
Kendrick says spoons and
umbrella rigs are producing
some solid keepers when
worked around balls of
bait in 15-30 feet. Football
jigs working in the same
areas. Also some fish taking
suspending jerk baits fished
on main lake points and
humps.
FORK - Water level is
7.06 feet low and stained
to clear. Water temp in the
upper 40s, low 50s.
Fishing guide Gary Paris
says bass fishing has been
good to nine pounds. Best
bite coming on suspending
jerk baits, Chatterbaits,
jigs and Rat-L-Traps fished
in water 10 feet deep or
shallower around scattered
grass and channel swings
with stumps.
Crappie fishing has been
good on deep points around
the dam. White bass are
excellent on soft plastics
dead sticked in 50-60 feet
of water. Catfish are good in
deep water on cut shad and
under cormorant roosts on
calm days.
Crappie are hanging
around deep timber in 25-
35 feet of water, suspended
about five feet off bottom.
CEDAR CREEK - Water
level is 4.93 feet low and
stained. Water temp in the
upper 40s.
Fishing guide Jason
Barber says a few black
bass are beginning to pull
shallow around docks and
any available cover, hitting
spinnerbaits, ‘Traps and
plastics.
White bass are fair on
shad pattern plastics dead
sticked over 30-35 feet of
water. Cut shad drifted in
the same areas is fooling
some quality blue cat.
Catfish also good in 2-4 feet
of water up north using cut
shad.
Crappie are slow.
Tigers dominate Marshall Mavericks
By TANNER HOLUBAR
Tribune Sports Writer
The Mount Pleasant
Tigers came into Tuesday’s
matchup with Marshall
sporting a 10-1-1 (4-0)
record, and came away
with a 7-0 demolishing of
the Mavericks.
The Tigers opened
the scoring on a goal by
Yogi Vargus at the 27:59
mark of the first half. The
Mavericks committed a
foul in their own goal box,
giving Vargus a direct kick
close to the net. Marshall
lined players up on the
goal line, but Vargus put it
in the upper right portion
of the net to give the Tigers
a 1-0 lead.
Vargus scored again less
than a minute later on a
header while falling on his
chest off of a cross from
Gabriel Moyao. The Tigers
scored again when Kevin
Perez stole the ball from a
defender and snuck it by
the goalkeeper to give the
Tigers a 3-0 lead.
The first half ended with
the Tigers up 3-0, and the
scoring only continued
in the second half. At the
38:52 mark of the second
half, the Marshall goalie
misplayed the ball and the
Tigers had an easy walk-in
goal to make the score 4-0.
Vargus then completed
the hat-trick, as the goalie
got a piece of the ball to
slow the momentum, but
the ball slowly rolled into
the net to give the Tigers
a 5-0 lead. Vargus then
contributed on the Tigers’
next goal, as he got past
the Marshall defense and
drew the goalie close to
him before sliding the ball
to Perez who tapped it in
for his second goal of the
game.
The Tigers then scored
again with just over a
minute left in the game to
make the score 7-0. Mount
Pleasant controlled the
ball for the majority of the
game, most of it spent in
the Mavericks’ half of the
field.
The district-leading
Tigers are now 11-1-1 (5-
0), and travel to Greenville
on Friday looking for
another win. The Tigers
return to Sam Parker Field
on Feb. 17 to take on Pine
Tree.

Mount Pleasant holds first action of 2015 baseball season
By JORDAN DAVIS
Tribune correspondent
As February begins,
sports fans know that
one sport is coming to
an end, and another is
beginning to take place.
The attention starts to
stray away from the
sneakers on the court, and
more towards the cleats
on the diamond. But for
the Mount Pleasant men’s
baseball team, there was
more attention being
paid to the new faces
that were on the field
warming up for the 2015
Black and Gold scrimmage
Tuesday night. In the end,
the Black team reigned
supreme, and defeated the
Gold team 7-1.
The game didn’t take
long to get action, as the
first pitch resulted in a
single for the Black team.
Unforced errors was the
story for the Gold team
early on, as the Black
team scored off of three
unforced throwing errors
to start the game to 3-0.
The Black team started
the game firing on all
cylinders, both offensively
and defensively. The Black
team scored two more
runs in the second to
bring the score to 5-0.
The Gold team came
with an answer however
in the third inning coming
off of a triple to get them
on the board 5-1. The
game then turned into a
defensive battle, as both
teams struggled to get the
ball past infield, but in the
end, the Gold team made
too many mistakes and
too many throwing errors,
which gave the Black team
two more runs in the fifth
to put the game away.
One thing Tiger fans
can look forward to this
season is offense. Solid
hitting will be a strength
for the Tigers, as three hits
almost cleared the warning
track for homers. Along
with hitting, stealing bases
will become a strong asset
to the team as well, as
they stole bases as often as
they could throughout the
scrimmage.
The defense is still a
work in progress, as there
were some mental errors
made in the infield, but
head coach Joel Windham
said that chemistry will
strengthen as the season
goes on, and those early
mistakes will work
themselves out.Tuesday
night,fans saw flashes of
diving catches, and eye
catching double-plays
made by both teams.
Overall, the Tigers hope
to have a solid season.
With a mix of returning
players and newcomers,
the Tigers look to make
a huge run in district
play as well as reach the
postseason. They will use
a strong lineup of hitting
along with speed in order
to make that run, a run
fans are looking forward
to being a part of.

The Mount Pleasant boys
varsity basketball team
hosted the Longview Lobos
on Senior Nigh at the Willie
Williams gymnasium. Both
teams played for third in
the division, and both teams
will go to the playoffs, but
Longview came away with
a 58-56 win. The starters
for Mount Pleasant were
Mark Quiring, Micheal
Famby, Jeremy Johnson,
Da'Treavon Rockwell, and
Jaquille Rodgers. Starters for
the Lobos were Kyle Sheilds,
Kendal Jones, Trez O'Quin,
Jayden Smith, and Jamycal
Hasty.
James Moore started the
game at the tip-off, and the
Tigers were up by four points
at six-to-two within the first
few minutes of the game.
Longview rallied with a few
quick pass plays and brought
the score closer. Jesse Morales
made strong moves on
offense at point guard in the
first quarter. Mount Pleasant
led Longview 17-8 at the end
of the first quarter. Longview
led Mount Pleasant in fouls
at five to one. Trez O'Quin
stayed with Morales on
defense for the Lobos.
In the second quarter
Longview still trailed Mount
Pleasant 17-10. Moore and
Jeremy Johnson teamed up
for points under the goal in
the first few minutes of the
quarter. Mount Pleasant had
turn overs due to ill timed
passes in the first half of
the game. Tigers defense
was successful at holding
the Lobos at bay however.
Jamycal Hasty drove the ball
under the goal for two points
under Mount Pleasant’s tight
zone defense. Longview
gave up fouls for points in
the second and the quarter
ended at 26-19.
Moore and Da'Treavon
Rockwell teamed up for
points under the goal at
the beginning of the third
quarter. The Tigers gave up a
foul which began a Longview
rally for points. Rockwell
earned a foul off of a layup
for two points and made
another goal at the free throw
line to keep Mount Pleasant
in the lead. Posession was a
tough contest for both teams
in the third quarter. Antoine
Anthony took the game to
the Tigers several times on
offense, but scoring points
remained difficult for the
Lobos. However, Longview
managed to complete pass
plays for points under the
goal. The Lobos tied the game
in the final three minutes of
the game, breaking Mount
Pleasant's lead for the first
time in the game. Morals was
fouled twice for points as the
score inched up and re-tied
Tigers lose close game to Longview at home
at 38-38. Longview dropped
a three pointer in the final
seconds of the quarter to
end the third 38-41 with
Longview in the lead.
The fourth quarter started
with Moore earning two
points at the free throw line.
Mount Pleasant kept the
score under two points as
they trailed in the fourth.
Two fouls were given up by
the Tigers and Longview
ran with the momentum the
free throw points created
and took the lead up to six
points. Missed shots haunted
the Tigers in the quarter's
last few minutes. The Tigers
utilized blocks from Moore
on offense to wrestle points
onto the board and tie the
game again in the final
minutes of the quarter at
54-54. Mount Pleasant kept
the game tied with a layup
from Morales but Longview
earned points at the free
throw line and took home
the win 58-56.
