2. Tribe Research
I have recently done research into tribes. A tribe is a social categorization into the type of person you are an, in
turn the respective interests and tastes. Examples of prominent tribes within our local area, according to The
Channel 4 program, are townies and young alternatives. The aspects that are called into question are the
actions of an individual moreover their ideal scenario. In relation to ‘Blinded‘, my film, is likely to attract gamers
and alternatives. This is as a consequence of the genre furthermore, the format of a super-hero team that
encompasses and optimizes, the age demographic of adolescents, we are targeting.
The opening sequence is driven by the polarizing tones of realism and superlative-form, which consequently
panders to the more identity conscious group in the alternatives, whom by association are appreciative of
relation and security in regards to their insecurities. By giving the characters a sense of conflict, internally and
externally, one may infer that they are representative of them in terms of their ability to feel, which is the
motivation of the plot. The sense of feeling manifesting into further curiosity and reckless abandonment of
safety. Another aspect that appeals directly to the two groups is the capacity for the extraordinary, almost as if
it was a direct extract from a comic book. Comic Book readers have a close association with gamers, notably,
but in a looser sense to alternatives for the sheer escapism that is proffered via the super- human aspects that
simply, are not prevalent in day to day life. The Avengers is a prime example of a film that the demographic
referred to, bought into and have carried through the expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, despite
aging with the films. This is particularly significant as it reflects and highlights the level of interest in the actual
film content, irrespective of a potential development in maturity. For the Blinded film, my audience will be
drawn to the almost paradoxical grounded and sensationalist tones, particularly given the aforementioned
appreciation of identity especially when offering a hand in terms of relation to the individual characters and
their motivation.
3. What are they listening to?
Blinded's viewers have a distinct sense of variety in terms of their taste in music. The range is evident from the
two main viewing tribes moreover, within each tribe.
Alternatives, are by definition and necessity fans of music that avoids mainstream appreciation, particularly
when referring to chart music. The tastes of an alternative vary from genre to genre but, what remains
consistent is the level of emotional complexity throughout. Artist gaining particular notoriety currently are Rat
Boy- for his subversion of the rap and hip hop genre- and Slaves- whom encompass the sense of rebellion. In
film, they appreciative of cult-classics, and more emotionally driven films. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World and Lost
in Translation optimize this with the level of charm moreover personal identity, within a wider-range of genres.
Gamers have a considerable interest in more electrically- driven sound. For example, they are associated with
dubstep and music that is driven by rhythm and beat as opposed to emotional complexity. In terms of when
they most commonly listen to this, when gaming is most appropriate as they seek comfort and stability from a
consistent pattern. In regards to how music is used in film, I believe they would be fans of Hans Zimmer
because his scores are driven by pattern and the exploitation of sound in terms of how loud or prominent it is
in the piece. Films that exhibit this in a candid manner are Interstellar moreover, Batman Begins. Batman Begins
in fact highlights the viewers capacity to engage with a slightly more classical approach with the orchestral
instruments used in the score. As a consequence of those instruments being used, a more sinister tone can be
festered through the sense of delicacy juxtaposing with the unerring sense of danger facing the protagonist,
which has been further exhibited in the recent film with the score of Jessie Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor using a
similar form- with Hans Zimmer’s score.
4. What are they watching?
Alternatives tastes are incredibly varied and are conscious of identity always, whether a new release or a film of
a certain vintage. The audience always will look to be stimulated by a plot as opposed to mere action
sequences. These films are often driven by the cast performance and the status of each individual within a film.
For example, The Dark Knight has been heralded, chiefly because of the fear generated by Heath Ledger's
chilling turn as the Joker. Despite being released years ago, this film is a staple in their film arsenal due to the
Late Heath's performance. Often, characters that offer complexity in terms of their mental state. As a more
open-minded audience, this challenges what is right and wrong in a fundamental sense. Particularly with
recent adaptations of Batman, as played by Ben Affleck, who grapples with the idea of morality and how power
applies to the said idea. Blinded loosely follows the tone through the sense of ambiguity with the main
antagonists acting as characters without defined form or origin, thus causing the audience to question their
supposed ‘evil’ nature and what justifies the deliberate sense of fear manifested from their presence.
Gamers prefer the spectacular aesthetics in both action and form, being more open to CGI if it opens for my
compelling scenes of action. The principle idea of action is the basic goal for the movie viewer. The films by
definition they are more appreciative of are The Fast and Furious and Transformers, as they weave extended
sequences of conflict with extraordinary visuals. Films they would not be particularly appreciative of are those
that rely solely on emotion or plot, a more thought-provoking film like Frank would be lost in regards to
appreciation as it is principally about the exploration of a character and the reason for their being, in a more
exploitative look at an individual. Blinded attempts to strike the balance between an emotive over-arching story
and a striking aesthetic sequence as to offer a complete story as opposed to a narrative where the viewer has
to piece together the details, because my demographic vary between “thinking man’s viewers” and those who
see a movie as something that should be candid, following a simple structure.
5. What TV are they watching?
In both tribes lie binge watchers whom look for something to invest in longer term for more
gratification as to the development of character and plot. In the case of shows that show violence
more prominently like Game Of Thrones, appeal to gamers as they value the action as previously
noted. The level of depth and how the extensive story is carried, is in the case, appreciated by
gamers due to the continuation of escapism. Similarly alternatives value the level of depth in the
created universe. However, Alternatives love to be challenged from an intellectual perspective as
they believe in content with greater consistency, so will be watchers of House of Cards. The
excessive political jargon will be a point of achievement for the viewers as they become more
familiar with the roles of every member in the political scene. Also this show is so character -
driven, so would immediate cause a point of interest as the viewer would want to have a greater
understanding of their motivations and aims. Although, series such as Daredevil are far more
logical to perceive the viewer watching. This is a consequence of their appreciation of the
superlatives moreover extra-ordinary elements synonymous with comic book characters, as that
directly appeals to escapist viewer-with clearly open minds. Daredevil particularly highlights the
connection to reality with gritty elements of faith and mortality, whilst interweaving a legal drama
into the character arcs as well as the overall plot. I believe the seamlessly binding of the viewers
thinking capacity, the realism and visually-striking supernatural elements makes this an ideal show
for the aforementioned viewers, from gamers to alternatives.
