1. In my thriller I was more influenced by political and action thrillers, because I have watched more thrillers in this genre and it interests me more
and it has more of a sense of realism compared to a sci-fi thriller, therefore which was the genre of thriller I decided to do. For example Casino
Royal, Ronin, Blood Diamond. I used other thrillers to inspire me and help me adapt my own. I started with establishing shots to first
emphasise my location as typically thrillers use cities or suburbs as our ideology believes that it is a more dangerous and hostile place to be,
also it is more realistic for the audience as most people are familiar with these type of areas. Therefore due to my genre I wanted the audience
to fell unsafe in their surroundings, as danger is one of the themes in my thriller. Also as I was inspired by James Bond e.g. Casino Royal, they
used a city for their introduction. Therefore I adapted that to use it in my thriller by using establishing shots. Furthermore the three shots I used
all have religious buildings in the shot for instance churches etc. I did this because I wanted to represent the guilt that the character felt
towards the action that they were taking, and the morality of the situation. Also a sense that power is constantly desired by people, therefore
all my characters are trying to gain a sense of power and authority, however the use of the religious building is symbolic of the fact that nothing
over powers religion or God. This not only makes the characters question there morals but also has an impact upon the audience as there feel
vulnerable as religion holds such great power. Also the audience may feel a sense of confusion as the expectation of religion in a thriller is very
low, because thrillers are about bending society’s ideology and views, and going against what is right, therefore religion goes against the
conventions of a thriller, which in turn confuses my audience. So the fact that as an audience that was the first shot we saw, shows religions
importance and hierarchy over the characters.
Moreover in my first shot I have two towers, I wanted this to
represent my two characters, to show them as a unit/team. Also
the shape of the building, represents the foundations and relation
between the boss (Scarlette) and the agents (Bertie and jack) this
is through the way that they are controlled by there boss and feel
enclosed in what they are doing, therefore is justification for why
they had to go to that level of extreme to killing their boss. This
fits with the typical conventions of a thriller as especially action
thrillers, it shows a continuous struggle of power and gaining
dominance over one another, this is been shown in films such as
Ronin.

2. The next shot jump cuts to a panning shot, to emphasize that we as an audience suddenly cut to Jack to show that he is a very
influential character. Also we are always behind him and cannot fully see his face. I purposely did this because I wanted him to seem
a mysterious and unknown to the audience. Therefore this would entice the audience to want to know what he is doing. Also the
fact that we are stalking him, makes him look vulnerable and innocent, however we as the audience have the power and authority
in the situation, as he is unaware that we are watching him. From my research this is conventional in the way that there is usually a
character who is victimized and portrayed in a vulnerable way, in order for the audience to feel compassion towards them but also a
sense of fear. However on the other hand it is not conventional because males are not presented as the vulnerable character
whereas women are. This is due to our ideology as woman are perceived to be weak and innocent whereas men are more powerful
and authoritative, due to the way status has been shown in history. This has been shown in such films as Blood Diamond where the
protective dad is taken away, portraying him to be helpless in front of his son. The use of the editing, as the filter is a dull colour,
makes the surroundings look dark and cold, this is done to be a representation of Jack’s personality, in the fact that he may be
miserable or maybe show the mood he is in. This lets the audience now that something bad is going to happen, which in turn makes
us have a lack of security. Furthermore due to the fact that the camera is static, shows our control and calm nature, as we are the
authoritative figure. Moreover as he is always in centre frame and the camera is panning, as we follow him, this represents that he
has a level of importance and we as an audience are interested in what he is doing.

3. The shot cuts as an ellipsis of Jack walking down the path, again he is in center frame and also so is the path. I did this to show that for this
character the journey is long, but also the fact that he is coming towards could be an act of desperation, for we as the audience to help him.
Alternatively as he is coming closer to us it gives us a sense that we are involved, as the audience and have some connection to the character,
as if we are on his side. Also the use of the ellipsis is a period of time where we do not know where he has gone adding a sense of mystery and
a lack of knowledge towards the audience. An ellipsis is a typical convention and mystery as a whole is a theme used in thrillers; this has been
shown in Ronin when he is looking at the girl and then progresses to the stairs again showing a ellipsis, which again is trying to portray a sense
of mystery. Furthermore the abrupt cuts of jack’s shows his fragmented state of mind or the fact that he is nervous. Therefore shows to the
audience that he is about to do something bad, therefore we have a sense of guilt, and our morals are lacking because we seem to be on the
side of a bad guy. This has been shown in Enemy of the state when the antagonist is speaking to the protagonist, as through the use of camera
angles e.g. high angle shots, and positioning of the camera, we as the audience are on the antagonist side, which again questions our morals.
My next shot cross dissolves into another shot of a car, with the two shots together cross dissolving, the previous image appears for a while
before dissolving, therefore with these two images put together it looks as if he is walking into the car, therefore this is foreshadowing what
might happen at the end and be a representation of his death.

4. Furthermore this is the first time you see that there is a contrast between my black and white shots and
regular colour shots. I used black and white editing to show that it was a flash back and give the audience an
insight into what has previously happened without doing it in a chronological order. Also black and white adds
an element of mystery and knowledge that the audience do not know about. Therefore my audience my feel a
lack of security as they are unaware of what is going on around them. Black and white has been used in
Casino Royal to again show a flash back but also the filter that was used made James bond look distorted in
his image, presenting him in immoral way. However in my own media film in stead of presenting those ideas, I
wanted to represented an element of mystery instead, making my characters seem unknown to the audience,
in order to entice the audience even more.
Moreover I cross-cutted my film to fragment it, this was to create again a sense that the characters in my film
have unstable state of mind, and that there morals of what they think of right and wrong, go against what is
agreed in society and therefore their minds are fragmented alike the order of the film, as people in society do
not agree with setting off bombs. This therefore in a way gains a sense of power towards the audience as we
have the stable mind in the situation and therefore have the control. The use of my editing was a way for me
to establish to my audience that my characters moral were incorrect. This develops the forms and conventions
of thrillers, as a main area that is portrayed in other films, is that characters morals have disappeared and the
most important thing to people is power and status through any means possible. This is shown in “Ronin” as
he will kill anyone who is in his way. Therefore the realism with in thriller films and in my own is limited as in a
regular society, situations such as these do not appear. Also the use the use of cross cutting is very
conventional in a thriller and has been shown in The Dark Night and Inception for instance in inception as it is
to do with dreams with in dreams, the use of editing has to cross cut from different moments in time. By
doing this there where able to continue the pace with out just doing it chronologically.

5. In my next shot the sound perceptive changes as the pace of the music slightly increases, as another character
is introduced. This immediately entices my audience and grips them into finding out more and understanding
this new character. For instance as Bertie is in the present tense and is about to commit and do something
awful, the music increases to the pace, to show his fear and state. Also the music I used was to mainly only use
piano and cellos, this was firstly because I adapted it from James Bond and also I wanted the instruments to
represent the themes and ideas of the film. For example the themes presented are wealth and status;
therefore as these instruments are expensive, also our ideology perceives pianos and violins as intelligent
instrument.
Moreover all the shots so far have been mid to long shots, this was done as we as the audience do not feel safe
or secure to be near to him, and therefore this presents him as a dangerous character. However it quickly cuts
to a close up of the briefcase as Jack walks past. This was to show the importance and relevance the briefcase
has to the plot and also as the briefcase is emphasises it makes jack seem insignificant. Furthermore the static
shot of Bertie stalking Jack by taking the picture of him, emphasises the use of technology and the effect it has
had on society. Also the use of the technology gives the impression of a secret agent, therefore presenting him
in a mysterious way but also as our ideology relates technology to intelligence, we then perceive him as being
extremely intelligent, and methodical and what he is doing. Therefore by this being created it makes him
higher in authority and also as he seems to have the control in the situation, he is therefore is more dangerous.

6. The camera pans across in the direction of Jack in the point of view of the audience as we are watching him.
This makes the audience have a sense of power, as it is as if Jack is our prey and we are stalking him. But our
point of view is concentrating on Jack, not Bertie; this shows Jacks importance and Bertie insignificance, at
this point in time. However there is a shift in power due to the music, this is because during the climax of
the music Bertie stands up after the climax has been reached, therefore suggesting he does not have the
power and there is an external force that has more authority over him, which controls his actions. The effect
upon the audience makes us feel a sense of confusion, as now we are unaware of what is going on and what
Bertie intention is. The fact that there is a shift in power, very much matches the typical conventions of a
thriller, as continuously especially between the protagonist and antagonist, there is always a shift in power.
This has been shown in the beginning of casino royal and enemy of the state. Moreover the next shot is off
a church in the background which is in centre frame, this then relates the fact that there is an external force
that controls everything, which could be either us as the audience as the whole time we are watching the
very move, or in turn it could in turn be God, this links to the that that there is a religious element to the
film. The shot then cuts abruptly to a close up of the brief case, this shows that they is a high level of
importance towards the briefcase. Also as the camera is in the point of view of the audience, the use of the
fast editing made it seem that the briefcase intrigues us.
The music again increases its pace within the piano piece as the shot changes to the sound perceptive of Bertie and when
it is present tense, therefore showing that danger is lurking and imminent. Also we cut from a long shot to a close up of
the car at a side angle, this shows we as the audience have a sudden interest in what he is doing, therefore as we have an
interest we have become more involved in the action. This implies that we are his accomplish and are in his side, which
immediately puts us in danger as well, shown through the music. Alternatively as we cut to a close up, it could also be that
we have a sense of worry and concern for what he is about to do, and want to try and help. Also in the side view of the car
we have a reflection from the mirror of his face for the first time. This was to show another side of his personality as if a
reflection of his self. For instance he has to sides of his personality, one in which he feels guilty for the actions he is about
to take, this is shown through the shots that we cannot see his face, as it is as if he wants to cover his face and hide his
identity. This is then contrasted to the super ego side, the reflection in the mirror is his arrogant and villainess side, in
which he does not care for his actions through the use of his aggressive facial expressions. Therefore as his character is
portraying himself in a way in which he has an unstable state of mind, we as the audience feel unsafe to be on his side.
Also the fact that the window is open shows his lack of security, and therefore he is in danger. This then creates panic to
the audience because of his lack of protection.

7. The shot cuts to them sitting on a bench together, at which point, the audience is made aware that they know each other, therefore the music adds in a string
instrument to add in more depth, because the music suddenly has gone deeper and therefore makes it more dramatic. Also the shot of them is made so that
they are both equally in centre frame, and is the first time they have both the same level of importance and relevance to each other. However the fact that we
camera is behind and we can only see their backs, creates a sense that we have a lack of involvement and understanding of what is going on. Therefore this adds
an element of suspicion and mystery. As Bertie picks up the briefcase, a clock chimes; this was done to exaggerate the fact that it was a poignant moment and,
emphasise the switching of the briefcases. Also the use of the sound bridge was to link the two shots together, and show that even though time has pasted, the
action still continues.
The music changes as Bertie approaches the building, relating to the fact that there is impending doom. Also the high pitched violins, was to represent a scream,
to show a sense of panic. Furthermore the shot cuts to a close up of a phone sending a message to inform the audience what is going. Also as the audience have
become closer to the action, shows that they are interested in what is going on, also we are beside him as he sends it, therefore implying that we are so what his
accomplish and friend. This then puts we as the audience in danger and a threat. Moreover as jack receive the text, he has express banking in the background,
this was to give an insight to what is actually in the briefcase, and foreshadow what may happen later on in the film. Also again emphasising on the theme of
wealth and money, which seems to be important to gain superiority. The shot cuts with a fade to black, until proceeding to the next shot. This was done to show
a pause in time and sense of an ending to something; also it introduces a new character. Furthermore as Bertie enters the shot, he is purposely-visible unclear
due to the shadows on his face; this was to illuminate his mysterious side, but also show that he has a dark and evil side to his character. However alternatively
his face is half in the dark and half in the light, this shows a sense of confliction within his character, and an idea that he has two personalities. The shot cuts to a
close up of another characters fingers tapping on the table, immediately this creates a sense of authority, due to the pace of the taps, representing a beating
heart. Therefore may show her control, and show the panic that Bertie feels. Again the shot cuts to the briefcase being in centre frame; therefore showing the
importance it has in the plot.

8. The camera is static and behind Scarlette at all times, the fact that the camera is static portrays her control in the situation, this then
emphasises her power and authority. Also as the camera is behind Scarlette, we are unable to see her face; this then adds a sense of
mystery and we are unaware of who she is, this then creates more danger towards the audience as we don’t know her capabilities.
However alternatively as we are on her side and facing towards Bertie, it implies that we are on her side and we as the audience follow
and accompany her.
Moreover the use that the location is in the office implies and emphasises that she has wealth and superiority. This therefore means see is
able to gain the authority in the situation. Also the use of the black chairs relates back to the idea that she has a mysterious side, but also
as they are black, due to the fact that black has connotations of death and evil, is foreshadowing what is to come. Furthermore the filter in
the shots within the office, has a washout, dark filter, this is to show a sense of pathetic fallacy in which it the mood is represented
through the filter. Therefore the filter implies an atmosphere of sadness and a sense of danger.
The music changes suddenly changes to being fast paced to show a sense of panic and increasing the audience anxiety. Also the contrast
between the facts that when the shot is on Scarlette the camera is static whereas when the camera is on Bertie the camera is panning or
moving in a more erratic way. This is to emphasise the feelings they are both feeling at the time, as again Scarlette is static and represents
her calmness, whereas Bertie is fearful and panicked, due to the actions he has decided to take.
The use of the panning of the car shows the perspective of the audience as we are tracking Bertie driving away as if we still care, and seem
to be worried. As Bertie steps out of the car it is adjacent to when the sound of the bomb noise, however the sound is only in the
perspective of Bertie as it, really has not gone of. Also the sound of the bomb is representing the idea of a heartbeat and emphasising the
panic he is feeling due to his mistake. Also the sound continues and acts as a sound bridge when the shot cuts to jack walking away, then
immediately links the two characters together and shows that they are both feeling fearful for there lives. Furthermore the use of the low
angle shot, panning towards Bertie, this makes the audience look innocent and insignificant, This shows that we are scared for them. As
jack receives the news that the bomb has not gone off, the editing technique makes him slow down, this emphasises that what has
happened is a poignant moment, and exaggerates his shock.

9. The last shot is a mid shot of just he mouth saying “kill them all”, I purposely made sure that you could
only see a section of her face, as I wanted to continue a sense that her character is mysterious and
dangerous. Also I used a woman as a boss challenges the normal conventions of a thriller and the typical
ideology that society perceive is correct, as people relate men to being more superior. However I used a
woman to go against these views, to confuse my audience.
Furthermore the use of my costumes I wanted all my characters to where dull and dark clothing, due to
the fact that what goes on in my film is bad and illegal, therefore I wanted to match peoples ideologies,
as the connotations of dark, is evil. Also Bertie wore a hat to make his character separate from the other,
but also to emphasise of the fact that he is the one who did the deed. Also I wanted all of them to wear
suits and my inspiration was casino royal, therefore I felt that through the suits the idea of wealth and
status would be presented.
