5. Responsibilities and Expectations
Responsibilities
Primary:
• Ensure the safety of patrons

lifeguarding, in and around the pool

6. • As a Campus Rec employee, you will be provided with uniform
requirements which you must adhere to while on shift.
They are as follows:
• Staff Shirt: You will be given two orange staff shirts: one dri-fit short-sleeve,
and one cotton long-sleeve.
• Fanny Pack/Rescue Tube/Whistle: These materials can be found at each of
our facilities. Please utilize during your shift, but return to same location after.
• Swim Suit/Shorts: You are responsible for wearing a swim suit or pair of
shorts to every shift. Heavy pants (jeans, khakis, sweatpants, etc.) will not be
allowed.
• Extra gear: While working outdoor, you may also bring sunglasses and/or a
hat. Footwear must be appropriate if worn during the shift (i.e. no tennis
shoes while actively guarding).

• Outdoor Only: When working ARC
Outdoor, you may work without a shirt
as long as you are wearing a lifeguard
swimsuit. Likewise, you may not wear
sunglasses or a hat while working
indoor at any time.
• You may wear light athletic pants or
leggings while working, but you must
always be prepared to enter the water.
• Never wear your staff uniform while
not on shift.

8. Performance Development Plan
“While we understand that students have demanding schedules, meeting job
expectations is a part of their responsibility. The following performance
development program has been created and administered throughout the Campus
Rec Department to allow consistent and step by step level of assessment.”
High Five Performance Infraction
9. Performance Development Plan
High Five:
• Job well done; the employee went above and beyond their
required duties.
• Anybody can submit a high five at any time
• They reflect positively on seniority points
Performance Infraction
• Points based system used as a guide for employee
discipline
• Infractions are reviewed, and points assigned on a case-by-
case basis
• Points will expire from an employees record after 365 days
from when they are accumulated
Performance Infraction Process:
1. Three (3) points accumulated = meeting with
supervisor regarding choices leading to this
accumulation
2. Six (6) points accumulated = meeting with
supervisor about the longevity of
employment for employee
3. Nine (9) points accumulated = discipline
hearing with supervisor and Human
Resources representative about possible
termination of employment
Examples include:
(1) point = failure to wear proper uniform, improper conduct, less than 20 minutes late with contact of supervisor, etc.
(4) points = failure to show up to work / over 20 minutes late, expiration of certifications without attempt to renew, etc.
(9) points = false reporting of hours worked, extreme insubordination, etc.

10. Grievance Procedure
• If you are dissatisfied with your supervisor/employer concerning the
Warning and Dismissal procedure
• If you are dissatisfied with the explanation and/or penalty given by your
supervisor
• You have the right to request a Grievance Review from the Campus
Recreation Human Resources Manager. You will need the following info:
• Your name and University Identification Number (UIN).
• Your position title and employing department.
• The date of the incident.
• Factual description of the incident.
• Your specific requests and recommendations in filing the grievance.
• Your signature and daytime phone number.
11. Harassment & Violence Policy
• Campus Recreation will not condone or tolerate harassment of any kind on the basis of race,
color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, disability, age, or marital status
Examples:
• Sexual flirtation, touching, advances, or propositions.
• Verbal abuse of a sexual nature.
• Graphic or suggestive comments, written or verbal, about an individual’s dress/body.
• Display in the workplace of sexually suggestive objects/pictures
• Campus Recreation is committed to a nonviolent environment for all employees and students
Workplace violence is any physical assault, threatening behavior, or verbal abuse occurring in the work
setting.
Examples:
• Verbal threats
• Attempting to cause physical harm
• Verbal harassment
• Disorderly conduct
12. Mandated Reporters for DCFS
• If any kind of abuse or neglect is witnessed or suspected, we are
obligated by law to report it to DCFS
• 800-252-2873
• If you choose to inform a supervisor instead of directly calling the
hotline, you are obligated as a mandated reporter to follow up and
ensure that the situation is properly reported. Below are common
warning signs:
• Many bruises and frequent new bruising
• Very dirty condition
• Very skinny/frail condition
• State of exhaustion
13. Employee Perks
• Earning promotions and gaining a higher role within the department
• Free membership to employees not registered in class
• Three (3) free Group Fitness passes per semester
• Free lifeguard recertification and CPR/BBP/AED certification classes offered to
Campus Recreation employee
• Three (3) free Rock Climbing passes
• Strength and Conditioning offers one free Movement Assessment and Fitness
Consultation per semester (contact Fitness Coordinator)
• One free entry per event that Intramurals offers for a Campus Recreation team
• Five (5) complimentary passes good for free admission to public skating, drop-in
hockey, or free style sessions at the Ice Arena
• Three (3) Guest Passes per semester
14. Blood Borne Pathogen (BBP) Kits
• You all have/will receive BBP training prior to beginning work, and it is
important for lifeguards to understand what goes into each BBP kit.
• Inventory: every BBP Kit should have Absorbent, Disinfectant, and
Biohazard Bags.
• Location: BBP kits can be found at each pool.
• Reminders:
• If material is mostly liquid, caked, or seeping, dispose of materials in red
biohazard bag
• Always glove up!

• General Procedure
• Apply disinfectant solution, and let sit 2
minutes
• Spread absorbent material to completely
contain the spill – if not saturated or dripping
it can be disposed of in the normal trash
• Re-apply disinfectant, let sit 2 more minutes,
then rinse with water and dry in necessary
16. Additional Staff and Patron Policies
Staff Policy
• No employees shall be under the
influence of drugs or alcohol while on-
duty or present at any Campus Rec
facilities
• Do not hold valuables for swimmers,
that’s why we have self-lock lockers
• On-duty lifeguards should be present
on or around the deck at all times to
assist in an emergency.
Patron Policy
• ARC Outdoor
• Bags are not allowed on deck (backpack, purses,
draw bags, etc.)
• Pool mats cannot enter the well
• No glassware at any time
• Revealing swimwear is prohibited
• Refer to the policy signs for more information
• Inappropriate use of equipment is not allowed
• Children five or under and non-swimmers (with
or without a PFD) must be directly supervised in
the water by a parent or guardian, and within
arm’s reach at all times
• CRCE
• Lifeguard/Student Lead must be present at the
top of slide before entering the stairs
• One patron at a time (no children on laps)
• Must stay feet first and on back at all times
down the slide
