2. Past Simple
Is a verbal tense of the Past that is used to:
• Describe those actions that took place at a given time in the
past.
• Past events that have ended but whose timing is not
mentioned.
• Describe previously performed routines.
The simple past is one of these tenses, present in
different languages. The mention of the past refers to
actions that were already carried out previously.
3. Characteristics
• It is the only grammatical time that uses past tense verbs.
• Indicates an action that was performed at a specific time in the
past.
• It is composed of simple elements, so it is only used in its
composition the following formula:
S + V2 + C.
Where, S is equal to the Subject of the sentence; V2, is the verb of
the conjugated sentence in Past; And, C, is the complement of the
sentence.
• In the complement can be used, optionally, expressions that
determine time, although the verb is the one that will determine if
the sentence is in the past or not.
• Its essential characteristic is that the Main Word of Prayer is
always in the Past.
4. Types
Regular verbs
In English they are called regular verbs to those who form the past by
adding the suffix 'ed' or 'd' to the root of the verb. This past marker
helps to recognize this type of verbs in a written text.
Examples:
• You worked very hard last week.
• She lived in Japan last year.
• They learned how to swim two years ago.
• She liked to sit in the sun.
• He always walked to school.
• I painted my house last weekend.
• Mr. Green worked with my uncle.
5. Irregular verbs
Unlike regular verbs irregular verbs do not have a past marker that
helps to recognize them. Fortunately, the group of irregular verbs is
composed of a limited number of verbs (about 350), while there are
thousands of regular verbs.
Examples:
• She read the newspaper yesterday.
• The telephone rang many times, but no one answered.
• She did the work of two people.
• He saw her on the street yesterday.
• I lost my wallet yesterday. She sent her child to a summer camp.
• We ate together last Saturday.
6. Exercises
• Yesterday my fiancé and me talked about getting married.
• I saw the building on fire.
• Your brother lived some years in Amsterdam..
• All my friends came to my birthday party.
• I really liked the movie.
• We watched the football match at the bar.
• The cat jumped over the car.
• His son got really bad marks at Maths.
