How new media aided research, planning, construction and evaluation
1. QUESTION 1
How did you use new media technologies in the research and
planning, construction and evaluation stages?
2. Introduction
• Throughout the project there were three different sections which were:
Research and Planning
Construction
Evaluation
• We used a wide range of software to aid these three stages and each piece of
software was used for various reasons. Having a wide variety of free software
available was extremely beneficial to us as we were operating on a budget of £0.
3. Blogger
• The first thing I had to do in the coursework process was to create a blog . There
are numbers of blogging software available but I chose Blogger. This was mainly
because I has used it at AS and therefore had experience with it. Once again,
Blogger proved to be an excellent piece of software due to the many advantages
that it has (these have been outlined earlier in the evaluation). Blogger acted as a
diary during the coursework process as it was where all work was stored and
updated. This would be something I was unable to do if I chose another form of
software such as PowerPoint.
• I believe that Blogger has assisted me greatly in the coursework process due to it
being such an efficient and easy to use piece of software.
5. Research
• During the research stages I used several different forms of technology:
• YouTube – This is an excellent example of Wed 2.0 as users can also become
contributors. I mainly used YouTube to analyse and research existing trailers which
provided me with an understanding of conventions of teaser trailers within the
sporting drama genre. As well as this, we used YouTube to upload all the different
versions of our trailer from first to final as this enabled people to view the trailer
and provide us with feedback.
• Google – This was the main search engine which I used during the research
section. I used Google to research exiting trailers, ancillary products, theorists and
layout ideas, which were just a few of the things that I researched. Google
provided me with all the information and content that I needed.
6. Research
• Microsoft Word – I used Word to create both the schedule and my audience
research questionnaires. These documents were than saved and copied onto
Blogger. Word was beneficial for things such as this as it meant documents could
easily be edited and any mistakes could be corrected.
• Microsoft PowerPoint – I used this software to record the research which I had
conducted. I used PowerPoint as it enabled me to easily show the information in
an creative way.
• Emaze – This is similar to PowerPoint however it is more complex and it enabled
me to display the information in a much more interactive and appealing way.
7. Planning
• Word – This was again an important part of the coursework process. It was used to
create production schedules, mood boards and also a risk assessment. One huge
advantage of Word is the wide range of tools that make it suitable for a range of
different tasks.
• Boards – I used a piece of Storyboarding software called Boards. This enabled me
to create detailed storyboards of all the shot ideas for our trailer. Using the vast
amount of tools available on this software made the production process easier as
we had a good idea of what needed to be in the shot/scene.
8. Construction
• Camera – Sukhi happened to own a professional Cannon camera which we were
able to use to film our trailer. This was beneficial to us as it ensure we created a
trailer that was professional looking due to the shots being very high quality.
• iPhone- we also used an iPhone during the construction process. We used this to
take a few photos on the filming day as well as a few photos for our photoshoot.
This is because iPhone 7’s have high quality cameras which can take photos that
look like they have been done by a professional. This is due to the sensor system
which enables the camera to focus easily and also avoid blurriness because of
shaky hands.
9. Editing
• iMovie – Due to Sukhi owning a MacBook, we chose to use iMovie as our editing
software simply because it was free and was already downloaded. iMovie was
extremely easy to use, as I had no prior editing experience, I found it very simple to
pick up skills and learn the basics of iMovie. I believe that iMovie enabled us to
create a teaser trailer that we were proud of.
• Photoshop- we used Photoshop to produce our ancillary texts. This was because
Photoshop allows you import your own images and edit them using a vast range
of tools that are available. This enabled us to create professional looking ancillary
products that we were extremely pleased with. Although Photoshop is quite costly
and some of the aspects are quite complex to use, we were able to overcome
these issues via research and free trials and we believed that we made the correct
choice in terms of software.
10. Evaluation
• MWSnap –This is a screen printing software which allowed me to include
screenshots of all three products etc. within the evaluation.
• PresentationTools – Microsoft PowerPoint, Emaze, Prezi, SlideShare. I used each
of these presentation software's to make my evaluation more interactive and
more interesting to read. I also wanted to include several images within my
evaluation and these software's enabled me to do this with ease.
