Demographic Indicators , Vital statistics and their sources of data are given in these slides . It also covers the demographic aspects given in the syllabus of Social and preventive medicine and Community Health Nursing
16. It has been estimated that with the current
trends , the population in India will increase
from 1.210 billion to 1.4 billion during the
period of 2011-2026.
24. • Age structure: 0-14 years: 27.34% (male
186,087,665/female 164,398,204)
15-24 years: 17.9% (male 121,879,786/female 107,583,437)
25-54 years: 41.08% (male 271,744,709/female
254,834,569)
55-64 years: 7.45% (male 47,846,122/female 47,632,532)
65 years and over: 6.24% (male 37,837,801/female
42,091,086) (2017 est.)
India has more than 50% of its population below
the age of 25 and more than 65% below the age of
35. It is expected that, in 2020, the average age of
an Indian will be 29 years, compared to 37 for China
and 48 for Japan; and, by 2030, India's dependency
ratio should be just over 0.4.
25.
26. SEX RATIO
• Sex ratio is used to describe the number of females per 1000
of males. Sex ratio is a valuable source for finding the
population of women in India and what is the ratio of women
to that of men in India. In the Population Census of 2011 it
was revealed that the population ratio in India 2011 is 940
females per 1000 of males. The Sex Ratio 2011 shows an
upward trend from the census 2001 data. The major cause of
the decrease of the female birth ratio in India is considered to
be the violent treatments meted out to the girl child at the
time of the birth. The Sex Ratio in India was almost normal
during the phase of the years of independence, but thereafter
it started showing gradual signs of decrease revealed that
there were 933 females to that of 1000 males.
28. Sex ratio at birth
• Sex ratio at birth can be affected by sex
selectively at birth . The sex ratio at birth for
india for the year 2014-2016 has been
estimated at 898.
• It varies from 902 in rural areas to 888 in
urban areas.
29.
30. DEPENDENCY RATIO
• Definition: Age dependency ratio is the ratio of
dependents--people younger than 14 Or 14 or older
than 65 divided by the working-age population--those
ages 15-64. Data are shown as the proportion of
dependents per 100 working-age population.
•Age dependency ratio (% of working-age population) in India
was reported at 50.99 % in 2017, according to the World Bank
collection of development indicators, compiled from officially
recognized sources.
31. • The more is the dependency ratio , less is the
economic development of a country .
• The term ‘demographic burden’ is used to
connote the increase in the total dependency
ratio during any period of time .
34. URBANISATION
• Urban population is the number of persons
residing in urban localities .
• In 2011 , the rural population -68.84%
• urban population-31.80%
• In 2017 , the rural population -66.5%
• urban population- 33.5%

36. LITERACY AND EDUCATION
• The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organisation (UNESCO) has drafted a definition of literacy as
the "ability to identify, understand, interpret, create,
communicate, compute and use printed and written materials
associated with varying contexts.
37. • Crude literacy rate. The total percentage of the people of an area
at a particular time who can read and write with understanding, taking the
total population of the area (including below seven years of age) as the
Denominator
• EFFECTIVE LITERACY RATE. Effective literacy rate is defined as
the percentage of literates to population aged 7 years and above.
38.
39. LIFE EXPECTANCY
• Life expectancy is a statistical measure of the average time an
organism is expected to live, based on the year of its birth, its
current age and other demographic factors including gender.
40.
41.
42. FERTILITY
• Fertility is normally measured in terms of women of
childbearing age, defined as 15-49 years, although births to
women outside this age range can, and do, occur. Fertility
should not be confused with fecundity, which is the biological
capacity of a population to bear children.
43.
44. Factors affecting fertility
• . Age at marriage
• .Duration of married life
• .Spacing of children
• .Education
• .Economic status
• Caste and religion
• Nutrition
• Family planning
45. FERTILITY RELATED STATISTICS
• 1. Birth rate
• The birth rate (technically, births/population rate) is the total
number of live births per 1,000 in a population in a year or
period.
• 2.General Fertility rate General fertility rate:
number of live births per 1000 women between the
ages of 15 and 44 years.
• General Marital Fertility rate - It is defined
as the number of births per year per thousand mid-year
married women within reproductive ages.
46.
47. • Total fertility rate. Definition: The number of
children who would be born per woman (or per
1,000 women) if she/they were to pass through the
childbearing years bearing children according to a
current schedule of age-specific fertility rates.
