2. In order to find out whether we were successful
in creating our short film, Screen Three,
Matthew and I carried out a questionnaire to
receive positive and negative feedback.
Throughout this presentation I will be
discussing and analysing the responses we
have gained.
Here are the questions:

4. What do you like and dislike about the film?
Like Dislike
Actors Storyline- the ending
Location Some of youths dialogues
Soundtrack and sound effects Sound judders at times
Editing
Lighting
Generation gap between the characters
Camerawork
Emotional connection
Mise-en-scene
As you can see from the table above, generally the response was extremely positive in
terms of actors as many felt that actors were well suited and increditable in terms of
bringing out the right emotions for the characters with their performances. Many felt
sympathetic towards the old man, Peter compared to the anger and villainous vibe
which the audience felt from the three youths. We were very pleased that we have
been able to portray our exact vision when filming this and maintained it well.
5. Most of the audience felt that the story escalated
very smoothly and gradually which helped the
subtle and simple storyline. However, some of the
audience reflected that the ending was confusing
and the sound design is not as strong as it should
be.
Whereas some people thought the empathy build
up was successful for the main character which
leaves a greater impact.
Some really liked the mise-en-scene and the
attention to details. we are glad that the audience
has noted this as we always wanted to make the
film look professional as possible with use of
artificial lighting, sound equipments, and the
props/costumes of the characters which all worked
together to create the cinematic appeal.
Some of the audiences mentioned that the
location/setting was one of the aspects they
enjoyed. Reading this is very satisfying since we
had difficulties finding the right location for the
cinema. Given that a few cinemas rejected our
offer to film for the cinema scene, it was down to
The Red Lion Theatre where we created our own
cinema hall. Reading the appreciation has made all
the hassle worthwhile.
Since there is always room for
improvements for this film and any
other future projects we asked the
viewers if the would like to change
anything. A common response to this
question was to include more people
in the cinema apart for the 4
characters. This is understandable as
the scene would have looked more
‘real’ and reactions of other cinema
goers could have enhanced the
situation. However, I do feel that if
there were more people in the cinema
the escalation and courage inside the
youths to abuse would not have been
as strong. Some also felt that there
should have been less dialogues from
the youths. Others consider that the
sound of the crash should have been
more forceful.
What would you like to change about
the film?
6. Did the actors suit their roles?
Would you class the camerawork as
successful?
Virtually all the viewers thought that the actors
suited their roles. The old man played by Peter
Glanfield was liked by many of the viewers as he
has succeeded making them fell pitiful and
empathy towards him with his mature attitude
which made him look believable. The youths
also suited their roles as they managed to
portray the ‘intimidating’ persona well.
Mostly everyone voted ‘yes’ as the camerawork
helped to create the ambience and established
the setting very well which made the film
engaging. They thought the film looked
professional with interesting shots and camera
angles. The camerawork was also appreciated
for the smoothness as it was not shaky . Other
thought the camerawork was very effective also
helped to empathise the feelings of the
characters through close-up shots. Its very
rewarding to read these comments as that's
what we were hoping to achieve.
Do you think the editing was successful?
Many felt the editing was smooth and it flowed
well and the editing was not noticeable so the
continuity was considered very good. We are
pleased with the comments about the editing
since nobody has found any flaws which also
helped with the narrative of our film.
For this question many of the viewers thought
that the target audience for our film are
teenagers and young adults as they can relate to
the characters and are familiar with these
issues which our film deals with. Others felt that
its very broad as older people will also enjoy the
film. A few people even said that short films are
lot financially able to have a cinema release so
our film is most likely to be viewed online so it
could have a diversity of audience.
Who do you think is the target audience
for this?
7. Does the piece successfully fall into
the drama genre?
Was the film's soundtrack suitable and
effective?
Everybody thought the film was very intense
and emphatic. They also felt the great
performances by the actors helped to
convey the emotions very effectively and it
also enhanced the drama genre. Many of
the viewer thought the film was dramatic
and almost heartfelt . The relationship of the
characters related to similar films in to
drama genre as they felt emotionally
connected to the main character. This is
very pleasing to hear as that shows that
we’ve succeeded in following the
conventions of a drama genre film.
Since this question consisted a ‘Yes, Maybe & No’
answer, I have decided to create a pie chart to show
the result clearly. As you can see from above
mostly people thought that the soundtrack was
suitable where as a minority of them disagreed.
The reason could be because of the old film choice.
Yes
Maybe
No
Any opinions concerning mise-en-scene?
Lastly the comments concerning the mise-en-
scene was very positive as most of the viewers
thought the lighting was exceptionally good in
the cinema as it helped to set the mood. Many
enjoyed the choice of location and the props
like the red car.
8. Overall we received an overwhelming audience
feedback from the questionnaire as there were
positive comment for every question which indicates
that we have successfully produced a short film
which falls under the drama genre.
