• SMARTPHONES – mobile phones with touchscreens that usually have enhanced
functions similar to those of a personal computer
• GOOGLE MAPS – web-based navigation service that includes road maps,
satellite imagery & road-level imagery along with real-time traffic data
• AMAZON – world’s largest online retail site that originally began as a bookstore, but
now includes many products along with streaming, storage, & hosting services

3. Smartphone
• Apple iPhone unveiled in June 2007 – revolutionized cell phone industry
• Followed soon by Google Android (September 2008) & Windows Phone
(October 2010)
• New smartphones replaced dated Blackberry & Palm systems that were
business-oriented & had slow Internet performance
• Since then, mobile internet connectivity has drastically increased
• Mobile Internet speeds are now 19.27 Mbps on average in the US
• 30% faster than 2015!
• Smartphones are more prevalent among Americans than computers
• Users can accomplish almost everything that was possible on a full
size computer, but now from anywhere with a smartphone
4. Smartphone Applications
• The rise in smartphone use can be largely attributed to the
increased utility of the devices themselves
• Manufacture-specific application stores provide access to
tools & gadgets to accomplish many tasks
• Both Android & iPhone app stores contain 2M+ apps
• Consumers can interact with social media, browse the
Internet, watch videos, pay for purchases, and much more
• Smartphones are conveniently with us everywhere
• Easy to capture photos & videos, as well as sharing
• iPhone is now the most used digital camera in the world
5. Google Maps
• Launched on February 8, 2005
• Provides a route planner that includes five modes of transportation:
• Standard vehicle driving with real-time traffic integration
• Public transit with wait time, travel time, & cost information
• Walking with hiking trail integration
• Bicycling including elevation change & bike lane information
• Ride sharing with services such as Uber
• Since May 2007, Google has included street-level imagery (known as
StreetView) that allows users to preview 360∘ panoramic views of their
planned route
• Directions can be easily sent to a mobile phone or printed

6. Google Maps + Smartphones
• Google Maps for mobile (website version) released in September 2008
• Google Maps Navigation released on Android in November 2009
• Google Maps iOS app released in December 2012
• Provides real-time, turn-by-turn, voice guided directions with
StreetView & satellite imagery
• Has led to the demise of the traditional vehicle GPS units that were
popular during the 2000s because Google Maps is free, always up-to-
date, and incorporates live traffic elements
• As of August 2013, the most popular mobile application in the world
• Google Maps portability & convenience has allowed it capture an
overwhelming majority of the maps & navigation market

7. Amazon
• Founded in July 1994 as Cadabra (launched as Amazon.com in 1995)
by Jeff Bezos
• Originally specialized in selling books because of large worldwide
demand & low price
• Amazon leveraged its size & availability over traditional brick and
mortar bookstores by offering a nearly infinite selection of book titles
• Began selling CD’s in early 1998 – the first move outside of its
bookstore cocoon
• Did not return a notable profit until late 2001, however Amazon is one
of the few online retailers to survive the “dot-com bubble burst”
during the early 2000s

8. Amazon Today
• Amazon offers more products & services beyond just books nowadays, including
streaming, hosting, & sharing services
• In November 2007, Amazon released its first branded device - the Amazon Kindle
• Electronic reading device that can store & display digital books & audio books
• Since the Kindle’s release, Amazon has release a series of branded devices, including the
Amazon Fire, TV, Echo, & Tap
• Amazon has grown to not only host its own website, but
also those of other major retailers, making it the largest
cloud computing provider in the world
• In 2005, Amazon launched a revolutionary unlimited express
shipping service known as Amazon Prime, which today also
includes access to on-demand video & music
9. Future Growth of The Internet
• The Internet shows no signs of slowing
down in growth
• In the coming years, the number of PCs
online will remain consistent with
previous years
• A large increase in small Internet-
connected devices, known as “Internet
of Things” is expected
• Smartphones & tablets will continue
similar growth levels
