1. Sample answers to qualifications as a Cloud Architect/Engineer
Ideal candidate thrives in a team atmosphere, takes pride in his/her work, and is committed to a
highly proactive, process-driven approach.
o I prefer a team atmosphere and work very well with others. Share knowledge and experience openly
and ask for others input as well. Helps to be able to bounce ideas and finely hone a solution that is
more detailed and complete than otherwise possible. Use to managing a 24/7 shop. My systems ran
the Redskins Caterer Food Service, US Open Golf Tournaments and multiple International Summits
including the Nuclear Submit a few years ago. I know how to thrive under deadlines and how to be
innovative and proactive to increase productivity and capabilities.
o With my very wide industry knowledge including Programming, Scripting, Templating, Automating
and all Networking and Computing technologies.
They must possess excellent programming skills and be customer oriented. Ideally, a motivated, self-
driven, and results oriented team player with the ability to learn and adapt quickly to new
environments and technology.
o My career started as a Programmer. I graduated with honors with my programming certificate from
Computer Learning Center before college. Have been using PowerShell for 3 years and most
recently to Automate Topology and Ongoing Management of an Microsoft Azure deployment. I am
learning ASP .Net by taking a class at the moment. All the logic and constructs are totally
understandable to me. I wrote a system level driver that created a virtual disk between a PC and a
System 370 when I was 19.
Skills and Qualifications
10 years or more experience with no less than 5 years of relevant experience within government
agencies;
o I have 32 years’ experience with 28 of it within government agencies. Literally hundreds of projects
and clients including FAA, DOT, HOR, DOJ, Navy, Air Force, Army, NSA, Pentagon, HUD, SSA,
NIH, Veterans Affairs, DHHS, OMB, CPSC, OPM, EPA,NRC,DOE,DOL,FDA.
Past experience in assisting in identifying the need for a Cloud Architect solution within a government
agency.
o I have defined and created Cloud Architecture on multiple occasions. I had designed the most
advanced remote access systems into a Private Cloud environment way back in the 90’s. Utilizing
Citrix and J&L Chatterbox equipment, with dial back capability for security, also RSA products.
More recently migrated the Food Service for the House of Representative over to Exchange in the
Cloud, even before Office 365. Then moved users over to a Microsoft RDS based system that was
virtualized under Citrix Zen Hypervisor with a complete Microsoft Back End. AD DS, SQL Server
and a complement of File Servers with full Firewall and Network Management capabilities. Other
projects where private, but most of the needs centered around cost savings, reliability and
performance.
2. Ability to perform complex, multi-variable problem analyses
o I pride myself on the ability to diagnose and troubleshoot problems within a complex Networked
System. With my vast programming, network design and compute experience, I can isolate and
deduct a problem quickly. Utilizing all the tools to see into the network, processes and nodes.
Knowing that is can be a bad cable or NIC, a misconfigured Server or even an expired password on a
Service Account. All the while being very aware of the impact on users and resolving the issue
quickly, even if that means failing over to a redundant system.
Experience working in an Enterprise Architecture function
o I have run an Enterprise Network the past 17 years. Server Updates, Lifecycle Planning, Backup,
Redundancy and Capacity Planning. Test Environments, Scaling and Line of Business App
Deployments are all procedures I am familiar with and use. Working with a team of people,
delegating responsibilities but also checking work and monitoring progress is critical. Setting up
procedures and reporting mechanisms with predetermined contingency plans is also an imperative.
Experience with architecture domains, such as Application, Mainframe, Data, Development,
Infrastructure and Integration
o I started in 1982 on System 370VM Mainframe and used Key Punch machines to program
JCL,COBOL, Assembler, FORTRAN. I have installed multiple gateways between dissimilar
systems and understand the role and value of each domain. I understand legacy systems and the
challenges that they provide. My general philosophy is to leverage the relationship, provide a secure
method to exchange information at the highest level possible. It could be an EDI level or a Virtual
Disk or even Terminal Emulation.
Ability to understand organizational goals/business requirements and translate them into
architectural deliverables
o I deliver Solutions through Technology. There is no point of designing a systems that does not just
meet, but exceeds requirements. It is also important to have a knowledgeable Architect that can set
expectations and ask tough questions when necessary to define the problem/solution in the most
comprehensive way. There are many unstated expectations sometimes and it’s important to get that
out. Security, Redundancy, Multilevel, Multisystem Design, no single of Point of Failure but also
Resiliency by thinking ahead and planning for all the contingencies.
Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, sufficient to communicate effectively with various
levels of management as well as technical and non-technical personnel
o I am very comfortable presenting and communicating ideas and plans. I have often communicated
with Executives and Engineers alike. I can tailor my presentations and communications for the
audience I am communicating with. I can provide Management reports, Analytics on System
Utilization and Performance. PERT Charts on Projects under Management and Verio Drawings on
current or future plans. While I am Technical, I have also consider myself someone who can deliver
the vision and big picture that goes along with the plan. I have presented at multiple trade events and
written over 10 published articles.
Understanding of enterprise architecture methodology, frameworks, and practices
o IT Architecture needs to be integrated with business needs. It must exceed what the stakeholders
want. Security and Microsegmenting System Access is a top priority, utilizing internal proxy and
firewall techniques. All of the systems users need to be integrated into the plan. It’s all about the
3. data. Maintaining integrity and consistency through monitoring and auditing techniques and
reducing duplication.
Demonstrated proficiency in designed and implemented widget and JSON strategy
o I have designed and implemented scripts in PowerShell ISE with multiple add-ons. I do not know
JAVA at this point. But the implementation of a Template or Git repository is familiar to me. Also,
working in a team on development is something I have done in the past and understand modular
programming techniques and good top down design. Newer techniques like DevOps and Continuous
Integration are new to me but I totally understand them. Breaking down barriers in getting the users
solutions is what it is all about. Even self-service templates, if authorized can be utilized.
Firm understanding of Scrum management process; coupled with extreme-programming engineering
techniques, including simple design, test-driven development, short development cycles, continuous
integration, and collective code.
o Code Management techniques like Scrum, DevOps are understood, but I have been a team of one. I
understand the Analyze, Design, Code, Integrate, Test, Deploy model and the Roles on a Scrum
team. I would be an able participant and if you want me to be Scrum certified, I can do that.
Security: Active Secret or ability to obtain.
o I am willing to Obtain
