2. In what way does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
3. Voiceover
When we were researching we saw
the opening for the film “Moon” and
we saw the voiceover used within it.
We saw it used in other film
opening soundtracks such as
Transformers, Divergent , and The
Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1
and we decided to use this
convention within our sequence.
Our voiceover, like the one in
“Moon”, gave an insight into the film
and explained some background to
it. In the film “Moon” the voiceover
introduces the audience to the
energy situation within the world
whereas we decided to use it to
explain the androids situation and
to create the enigma as to why he
was running.
4. Font
Throughout every sequence that we
watched during our research we saw
that the font used was Sans-Serif
style.
We considered using a serif style font
to challenge this convention however
in the end we decided to follow this
convention as it fat within the
storyline.
We decided to use a fairly simple and
plain font as well instead of using a
customised and/or animated font such
as the one used in Transformers or
Divergent. This was to try and convey
the post-apocalyptic aspect of our film
through the use of simplistic styles
rather than extravagance.
However the font still is sci-fi
conventional as its slightly digitised
and therefore works very well within
our opening sequence.
5. Mise-en-Scene
Costume: Our costume was used
to show that the character was an
anonymous outcast from society.
We based the colour scheme off
conventional sci-fi colours ,grey and
black, and off the divergent factions
scene.
Props: In lots of sci-fi films that we
saw during our research ,such as
Guardians of the Galaxy, the
protagonist would have a hand held
gadget of kinds. We used this
convention within our film in the
form of a recording device which
was used by our android.
Location: Our location was a
forest. This location is not
conventional to the sci-fi genre, in
fact it challenges it due to the
natural and realistic environment
6. Credits
Our credits were in the same
conventional font as the titles to allow
for continuity and to fit in with the
convention of continuing the same
font throughout the film/opening
sequence.
We used the “Divergent” credits
timeline to plan the order of our
credits due to the fact that “Divergent”
is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi film which is
the same genre as our own. We
considered using the title credit plan
from “Guardians of the Galaxy” or
“Back to the Future” however they
were not the right sub-genre so
therefore it would have been
unconventional to use that credit
sequence.
A feature of our credits that we
particularly liked was the credit being
embedded into the film world by being
on a tree (as seen on the right). This
was inspired from the “Moon” opening
sequence in which this feature was
used regularly.
7. Soundtrack
Our non-diegetic music was a
conventional sci-fi track due to its
tempo and the instruments used
(strings/drums). We had considered
using an alternative track to
challenge conventions however in
the end we felt it was too much of
a risk as we were not sure if it went
with the sequence.
In the end we also decided that our
track would also become our main
characters theme motif. The reason
for this decision was due to Darth
Vaders theme in “Star Wars” and
we felt that this would be a
worthwhile convention to use.
