1. Unit 30 Evaluation
In this unit we have been researching the advertising industry to develop our understanding
of the conventions of advertising. I enjoyed this unit as it had a lot of designing tasks and I
am interested in advertising as a choice for university.
For task 1 we had to find and define logos, pathos and ethos which makes up the advertising
triangle, this theory is where you can persuade an audience based on how well a product
appeals to the audience. I understood this theory after finding a website that explained the
theory very well; I would later use this to persuade my target audience. This task helped me
to understand how adverts appeal to audiences.
For task 2 we had to analyse many different types of adverts including realist narrative,
talking heads and advert series. I had to explain why each advert fitted into the category
and explain what happened in it. I believe I did well in this task but could have put more
detail into my analysis.
We had to research 2 different companies for task 3; ASA and Ofcom. I had already
researched these companies in another unit so I had some knowledge on what they did.
Both of these help to ensure smooth running of the advertising industry as well as many
other media sectors.
For task 4 we had to look at sources of information; how a company finds out how well a
product is doing in the market. They use rate cards, research agencies and advertiser’s
information packs to gather information and send it back to the advertiser. I found this task
difficult to understand as it was more complicated than the previous tasks and I it was the
first time I had heard of these services.
In task 5 we had to explain the role of qualitative and quantitative research in the TV
industry, I had already visited this topic in another unit so I understood these terms already;
we also had to look at BARB (Broadcasters Audience Research Board) who is the official
source of television viewing figures in the UK. This was the easiest task in the unit as I knew
all of the information before starting the task.
Our next assignment was called HA3 Objects of Desire, in this assignment we had to choose
a product that we wanted to advertise. My first choice of product was Supreme caps but I
was unable to gather the right equipment that I wanted to involve in my advert, because of
this I decided to use Vans Shoes instead as this is a product I had access to and I believed I
could produce a good advert for them. Next I had to research and analyse adverts for similar
products which helped me to understand conventions and gave me some ideas of what I
would like to do, this task helped me a lot to generate ideas. A lot of the adverts I watched
had similar themes and I chose not to follow these conventions.
2. After analysing the adverts I had to produce my idea to present to my tutor, my
presentation is recorded and can be seen on my blog. I believe I gave a detailed
presentation and highlighted the key aspects that I wanted to include in my advert. I found
that presenting my idea to my tutor helped me a lot as it was the only time I had discussed
my idea and been given feedback.
For the final task we had to produce our advert, the camera I booked out from college was
different to the one I had used previously to shoot my music video and I struggled to get the
desired settings. Once I was happy with the camera I began to film my initial idea but soon
found that it would be too difficult to get to the locations and have correct props which
meant I had to slightly re-think my idea. Once the filming was complete I had to edit the
footage together using After Effects, I found this part rather easy as I feel confident using
the software due to previous experience.
My final advert was not as I had planned, I believe that I could have made it look much more
professional given more time. I worked well through the theory part of the unit along with
generating ideas for my advert. If I was to create another advert I would ensure that I had all
of the propos I need and choose an accessible location to shoot.
