This document summarizes an evaluation of assignments completed for a unit on advertising. It discusses tasks analyzing advertising techniques like logos, pathos and ethos. Another task required analyzing different types of advertisements. The student enjoyed creating their own 30-second car advertisement the most. They conducted research on similar ads, chose a target audience of new drivers, and filmed themselves driving to create an ad that followed conventions of the genre. While some initial work was subpar, the student was able to revisit the unit and pass, completing an advertisement they were proud of.
Evaluating Advertising Techniques and Creating a Car Advert
1. Unit 30 – Evaluation
In this assignment we looked into the advertising industry and further developing our understanding
of the conventions and techniques of advertising. To begin, I didn’t really enjoy this unit but however
after further engaging in advertising techniques later in the unit I found it quite enjoyable.
In task 1 we had to research and define the three terms, logos, pathos and ethos. This is known as
the ‘triangle’ of advertisement in which you could persuade an audience based on how well the
speaker or product appeals to the audience. After a short amount of research and help through the
Eccles Moodle website I quickly understood the ‘triangle for advertisement’.
Task 2 was similar to task 1 because we had to look at adverts and analyse the certain conventions
within. The only difference is that in task 2 we had to look at certain types of adverts such as
‘narrative, realist narrative and talking heads etc.’. We had to describe why the advert we chosen fit
into a certain category.
Task 3 was a simple task where we were assigned with looking at two companies that worked to
ensure that the advertising industry is kept in check the two companies that we were told to look at
from ASA and Ofcom. This was a convenient task as they were on other units I completed for my
other tutors as they are major companies within the media industry.
The next task we were given was another relatively small task. We had to look in the way that the
advertiser gets the required information so they know if the product they are trying to sell is doing
well or even if they need to back to square one and re-plan their design. In this task we were told of
the rates cards, information packs and research agencies which are the main methods used to get
the information back to the advertiser. At first I didn’t understand the task but after extra help from
my tutor I quickly picked up and understood what was asked of me for this task.
We were given another assignment within this one called ‘HA3’. We were told to pick a product in
which we would create a 30 second advertisement for. This was my most enjoyable assignment
throughout the year. I chose to do my advertisement on my car as it’s an object I desire and use
everyday.
After we had chosen a product to advertise we had to undergo research in the specific genre of
advertisement our product fitted in. To do this I went on YouTube and found example of
professional car advertisements and took many of my ideas from one, in a way this was my
‘template’ for my advertisement. The target audience for my advert were for new drivers 17-21. I
followed the conventions of other car advertisements and had loud music playing over it. I chose
that target audience because the car is mainly aimed at new drivers to reduce premium costs for
insurance etc. My analysis for this was in depth and I thought this was a good asset towards my final
piece. In order to do my advertisement I gathered an extra crew member to film me driving the car
as it’d have been difficult and unprofessional to try and do it all myself.
Across the entire project the work I did primarily was admittedly not up to a good standard and in
2. order to fix this I had to heavily revisit a lot of the unit in order for me to pass the year, I did however
do this in time and I’m proud of the work I have achieved and the advert I completed.
