Unit 30 – Evaluation
In this blog I will be talking about the advertising industry and its industry’s codes and
conventions, while talking about what I did in this unit.
In task 1 we were assigned with looking for the three terms logos, ethos and pathos. Logos
is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason. Ethos is an appeal to
ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the
persuader. Finally pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of
an argument by creating an emotional response. I believe I understood this theory well in
my opinion, I understood how using the theory would help me persuade the audience. In
relation with the theory we were given a template and told that we had to find examples.
Some examples I chose were Evian water and Coca Cola. I used these examples because
they had aspects that I wished to use in my advert. I thought this task was useful and
informative as it gave me detailed knowledge of how things are advertised to the audiences.
Task 2 was similar to task 1, with me being assigned with looking at adverts and analyse
conventions. The only difference between the two tasks is that in this one we had to look
different types of adverts such as “Realist Narrative, animation, documentary and talking
heads etc”. During this task we had to explain what happened in the advert and why It is
seen as that type of advert. I believe I did well in this task, I could define the different types
of adverts from one another and I explained it in detail on my blog.
In task 3 I had to look at two different companies that ensure the advertising industry is kept
in order. These companies where Ofcom and ASA, I had already had knowledge of these
companies as they have a lot to do with the media industry. I did this task in detail, showing
all the different sections of the media industry these companies are involved with.
The next task was to look into where the advertisers go their information from, so they
know if a product is selling well or not and what they can do to change this (by using
different methods etc.). This task talks about “Rates cards, information packs and researcher
agencies” which are the main three methods to give the advertiser information. I
understood this task to a limit as it was quite a lot to take in all at once. By the end of the
task I had gained enough knowledge about this task to talk comfortably about it.
Task 5 was a simple all I had to do was look at audience identification of qualitative and
quantitative research. I had detailed knowledge of this task as I had already learnt about
qualitative and quantitative research earlier in the year in another class. I learnt that it
doesn’t matter if its radio, TV or film that these research methods can be used to find
information that the advertiser can use easily. Another company we had to look into is
BARB. An organisation responsible for providing the official measurement of UK television
audiences. This was another organisation I had looked into in other lessons so talking about
the information was an easy task.
For task 6 we had to spend the lesson looking into the different type of audience and to see
what kind of audience we are such as “The explorer”, this type of audience look for new
things. This task helped me understand what type of audience my advert would be aimed
at. I also learned that the demographic is broken down into 6 separate groups, and their
labelled by using a letter code to describe the income and status of the member of each
group. I can apply this method of finding my target audience quite easily and I can also use
this for more assignments later down the line. I enjoyed this task as I found it quite easy to
do.
We were given another assignment that we had to put in the same blog as before. The
assignment was called HA3 – Objects of Desire. In this assignment we were tasked with
picking a product that we would have to advertise. I chose the IPhone 4s as I have one
making it easier for me to think of ideas. I was originally going to film my advert so owning
an IPhone would have been a good advantage for me. After picking our products we looked
at adverts for the products and analysed what the conventions and target audience were for
the product. I looked at past adverts and in my opinion analysed in detail as I noticed the
adverts have a lot reoccurring conventions in the apple adverts. The target audience for the
products were teenagers and young adults as they are the most technically up to date; they
also have the funds for the product. I think I analysed the evaluations to a good standard as I
went into a lot of depth and looked into how I could apply the same conventions in my
advert. Next I was asked by my tutor to come up with an idea for an IPhone advert, which I
later had to present to my tutor. I thought I presented my idea in a clear and easy way to
understand. I know this as my tutor understood the concept of my advert idea.
Finally I had to produce my advert. I had to change my whole idea of filming my advert into
making it entirely on after effects. I changed this because it was too hard to film my IPhone
so close to the screen and get it in full detail. So instead I got IPhone picture templates and
animated them to make my advert. I preferred the way I made my advert, as even though it
was a lot of work it looked more professional and generally better than it would have been
if it was filmed. I think I picked a good sound track for my advert as it fitted the IPhones
conventions. I think my advert was slightly repetitive however and if I was given more time I
would have ensured to make my animations more complex to keep the viewer’s attention. I
would have also changed the angles in my advert as well to make it more interesting.
In conclusion I believe I did all the work in these two units to a good grade standard. I went
into a lot of detail in all my pre-production work, helping me develop my advert ideas well.
Then I made my final product and made it look professional and as much like a real advert
as I could. I also believe my blog shows my work throughout the units well.
