1. Week 1

HUMAN PERSON
What is Philosophy?
Jan Pauline L. Gallego
Notre Dame of Tacurong College
2. Objectives:
Upon completing the lesson , students will be
able to:
Define the meaning of philosophy.
Appreciate the meaning of philosophy in
developing one’s critical thinking.
Write a personal reflective journal.
4. What do we mean by philosophy?
Greek words – Philein meaning “love” or “friendship”
and sophia meaning “wisdom”.
Literally , Philosophy means “Love of wisdom. But
what is love and what is wisdom. As a drive, love
always seeks unity with the object, it desires to
possess its object. On the other hand, wisdom means
the good exercise or application of knowledge.
5. Truth is the ultimate object of knowledge. Hence truth
is being shown and practice by a man of wisdom. To
philosophize, therefore, is to be in a quest, or to have the
desire towards living the truth.
Philosophy is the science that investigates all things in
their ultimate reasons, principles and causes through
human reason alone.
6. I. What is Philosophy?
Philosophy is a science because it is a unique realm for
investigating things.
Philosophy is not an exclusive science.
Philosophy investigates thing inside and outside of the
phenomena.
Philosophy uses the mind by necessity.
8. Philosophy is like a
candlelight in a dark room.
In the dark, one could
see only if there is a lit
candle or any source of
light.
With philosophy as light,
ultimately, one will know
which way to go and what
to do.
9. Philosophy is like a child.
A child practically
knows nothing about
things.
S/he asks pertinent
questions that provoke
the mind.
S/he brings back
simple problems and
prompts people to
scrutinize the basics of
life.
10. Philosophy is like a bird-a
free flying over places and
seeing things from the
horizon.
Philosophy is free.
Where there is reason
and love, there philosophy
alights.
it takes on bird’s eye
view-observing things
from a distance while
taking on a disinterested
perspective.
12. Philosophy is not a
monster to be feared.
Its not an enemy that
brings about chaos and
destruction.
As a matter of fact,
through wisdom and
knowledge, philosophy
becomes a necessary way
to humanize a person.
Philosophy is an
essential element of every
curriculum that people
generally take into
consideration.
13. Philosophy is not a
broken glass.
A broken glass is
good for nothing.
It no longer
performs what it is
intended for.
This is not the
case with Philosophy,
because it has many
practical uses.
14. Philosophy is not
uninteresting.
The usual impression
with this subject is that it
is boring.
Students commonly
find discussions tedious
and impractical.
This should not be the
case because philosophy
challenges us to make
sense of personal
experiences.

Editor's Notes
Science is characteristically systematic investigation of things. A field of investigation that has the ability to go beyond techniques and systems. A science that has the ability to construct and deconstruct itself.
It practically encompasses all things. Mother of all sciences that goes deep into the realm of Rel, Sci, Mat, Phy, Pol & HS. Philosophy concerns not only in answer, but also in the question themselves.
Plato- World of ideas. Mind is the ultimate factor, which the human race can use to recreate it self and the world around it.
