1836Texas won independence from Mexico, it was admitted as a state to the union in 1845.
1837Samuel F.B. Morse demonstrated the first successful telegraph in the USA.
1846-1848 Victory in the Mexican war gave the U.S. new territory in the west. California, Utah,
Nevada, and parts of other states were included in that new territory.
1848 The discovery of gold in California started the gold rush. Thousands hurried to establish
claims. They were called "forty-niners" because of the date of their arrival.
1853The USA bought additional land from Mexico, setting the nation's present southern border.
1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected 16th president.
1860-1861 Eleven southern states left the Union in disagreement with North about slavery and
states' rights. They formed the confederate states of America.
1861-1865 Civil War between the unionists and the confederates. America was torn apart in a
bloody conflict between northern and southern states. President A. Lincoln freed the slaves
(Emancipation Proclamation, 1863), defeated the Southern Confederacy and kept the Union
intact.
1865-1880 The Indian wars are fought in the Great Plains; most of the Native American
inhabitants of the west were evicted from their lands.
1867 The U.S. bought Alaska from Russia for a little more than 7 mln dollars - less than 2 cents
an acre.
