Very few identify as ‘European’; more fail to identify with
‘English/Scottish/Welsh’ than ‘British
Some people identify themselves as mainly being English/Welsh/Scottish, some mainly as being
British and some mainly as being European, and some people feel a mix of these.
If you had a total of ten points to allocate according to what you identify with, how many points would
you allocate to feeling each of the following?
You have ten points to allocate across each of the three identities, where giving more points indicates you feel
more strongly part of that identity. You may give as many or as few points as you like to each, so long as the
total adds up ten.

Technical note
• Ipsos MORI interviewed a representative sample of 1,099 adults aged 16-75
across GB. Interviews were conducted online, from 26th-29th July 2016. Data
are weighted to match the profile of the population of this audience.
• Subsequent questions were asked only of the 1,052 British citizens identified.
• Question two (“Which two or three of the following, if any, would you say
makes you most proud to be British?”) was asked of half the sample (524
British citizens).
• Where percentages do not sum to 100 this may be due to computer rounding,
the exclusion of “don’t know” categories, or multiple answers. An asterisk (*)
denotes any value of less than half a per cent. Data are based on all adults
unless otherwise stated.
