Dracula
The people of the Philippines believe in a creature called the mandurugo, a vampiric creature that takes form of a beautiful girl by day, but grows
wings and a hollow, thread like tongue used to suck the blood of the sleeping at night. The Cape region in Africa has the folklore of the impundulu,
which has the ability to transform into a large taloned bird that can control thunder and lightning. Vampires are seen in stories and folklore throughout
civilizations and generations. Even though people knew of vampires, Bram Stoker's novel made people fear them by terrifying his reader's with his
persona Dracula. The Count has been known to be a very complex character with many odd quirks and traits. Nowadays these have been changed or

Dracula made an appearance in Joss Whedon's TV show and was able to control human minds. A major change is how vampires react in sunlight.
In the beginning of Dracula we are to believe that he can only go out at night. Later on Jonathan Harker believes he saw Dracula on the streets of
Whitby during the day. Van Helsing later confirms that vampires are only weakened by sunlight. The vampires in the Patricia Waddell books and
the Buffy series are unable to step foot in daylight without burning up. However in Waddell's books the vamps can easily be revived. These two
adjustments to the original make sunlight an instant death to a vamp instead of just being weakened. Surprisingly the vampires of the Twilight
series remain closest to Stoker's original because even though they sparkle in daylight they still walk around during the day. The killing of vampires
has changed in books and TV shows and even varies throughout the book Dracula. Dracula's wives are killed in the traditional way, a wooden stake
through the heart, but Dracula is put to rest with two knives. Today vampires can be killed with anything, but a major change is the use of a silver
stake in many different series. The way vampires die has also changed. Killing a vampire in True Blood is far removed from wooden stakes and dust,
the process of killing a vampire is brutal and the vampire melts into a gruesome pulp. Anne Rice's vampire Lestat had his

Dracula Reflection
When you hear the word Dracula, what words do you associate with him? Dead, scary, vampire? For most, it would be all of the above. However,
when speaking about Dracula, no one hardly utter the word man. Dracual depiction drew a fine line of him being both man and monster, but can we
really say that he is of man when his able to turn into different creatures? Dracula's complex personality and human form will be discussed throughly in
this essay, while also touching on the subject of his sexual needs and wants.
When Stoker's character, Dracula is first described in the novel he is described as having a very stong face, thin nose, lofty forehead, massive eyebrows
and a rather cruel looking mouth and moustache (22). Reading a description...show more content...
Transforming into other creatures is unnatural, it is of the evil or in this case the undead for Dracula.
The undead was quite prevalent in this novel because the blood sucking vampire, Dracula would feed on the living until he they finally became dead,
then turing into a vampire themseleves. The fact that we have a man who seems normal on the surface is what makes the Dracual character so
uncanning. He seems like an average person, despite the way he looks at first, but after understanding what he is capable of we almost feel taunted and
confused because he is in fact a monster and had been the entire time. Uncanning means something that is familiar yet unfamiliar at the same time and
is shown to of unnatural behavior or acts. Dracula's normal interaction with Jonathan Harker made us view him as a man, but once his revealed as
sleeping in a box, climbing walls, powerful force over animals the distinction of him being relatble to us is no longer there.
So to interpret Dracula from a psychoanalytical point of view, many acts of sex appears in the story. Dracula's mean of surving is a significant
example. In order to live, he has to suck blood from another living being. In the story, Dracula had his attraction to the female characters to sustain off
of, which once again makes him seem more like a man to have sexual interaction with the female characters. He became the wedge in many of the
character relationships. Dracula came

Theme Of Religion In Dracula
As we all know Dracula not only has to do with the horror, blood and vampires, but religion, christianity and the Victorian society that play a huge
role in the story. These topics all have a reasonable amount of influence on how Dracula was written, and how the various themes in Dracula were
developed. The input of religion is seen from the start all the way to the ending no doubt about it. In addition, there are also various examples of how
the Victorian society also mixed in with religion, like the ideas of people back then and what they thought was wrong and right due to society's beliefs
. The exploration of thoughts and ideas by all the characters regarding what is wrong and right due to society and religion is also easily seen
throughout the story. In the novel Dracula, written by Bram Stoker, the Victorian society influenced overall in the way it was written, and how their
beliefs at this time of Christianity are being explored to these new ideas.
From the very beginning of the novel the superstition and Christian belief appear very clearly. Countless numbers of people during the Victorian era
believed in all kinds of superstitions. In the beginning when Jonathan is leaving his hotel and about to go meet up with Dracula a woman gives him
a crucifix, "It is the eve of St. George's Day. Do you not know that tonight, when the clock strikes midnight, all the evil things in the world will have
full sway? Do you know where you are going, and what you are going to?"

Dracula Influences
Dracula: Influences of the Present and Past
Vampires are not completely fictional. In the late 1890s Bram Stoker takes historical information and old European folktales to create famous Gothic
novels like Dracula; Before writing Dracula, he studied for eight years stories of vampires. The title of Stoker's story has historical significance to
Vlad Dracul III, a Wallachian ruler who impaled his victims on stakes.Bram Stoker also was influenced by his lifetime, before the publication of
Dracula, Gothic and Epistolary novels were on the rise consequently why Dracula is classified as both. Stoker's novels show his ideals as well as
views on social and political reforms during the Victorian era. Moreover, the threats of female sexuality plagued Victorian anxieties, morals were
being questioned. At this time, Victorians were believed to be morally progressing and can now be seen as a more prudish time. During this time book
publishers often altered words that might be inappropriate. Bram Stoker's Dracula establishes the seminal view of vampires that has been modified
throughout the ages to the now idealized vampire.
In Bram Stoker's novel, he creates the first ideal look of a vampire. At the beginning of the story, Jonathan Harker travels to Transylvania to go the
Count's castle on business. Jonathan along the way has strange encounters with townspeople about where he is traveling. Stoker early in the book
draws from our reference of the now traditional vampire and states in

Essay On Dracula
Movie review of Dracula Bela Lugosi is arguably the most classic example of an actor taking on a vampire role. However, during 1931 when the
universal studio was casting the 1931's Dracula, Lugosi could only barely speak English, and therefore almost lost his chance at playing the iconic part
("Dracula (1931 English–Language Film"). Nonetheless his accents and costumes, which has become the classic look of the vampire, he himself was so
typecast in his role that he was actually buried after his death in his Dracula costume. Certainly, it is Lugosi's performance that makes Tod Browning's
film such an influential Hollywood picture. Overall, I will give it a 3 star out of 5, compared with the older version film of Dracula, because of the
dialogues and sounds, the plot is much easier for the audiences to understand, without any editing or background music the horror of the film is not

Dracula, By Bram Stoker
The story of Dracula is well documented and has stood the test of time since it's Victorian age creation. More times than not, literature writings are a
reflection of the era from which they are produced. In the case of Dracula, Vampire literature expresses the fears of a society. Which leads me to the
topic I chose to review: sexuality. TheVictorian Era was viewed as a period diluted in intense sexual repression and I believe that Dracula effectively
exploited this as the fear of sexuality was commonplace in the society. In this paper I will examine Bram Stoker's Dracula and highlight his use of
sexuality. I will analysis the female sexuality that is prevalent throughout the book, the complexities are at work within the text, and the...show more

This passage characterizes Mina's obedience to her spouse Johnathan, and introduces her as the modest woman. Lucy Westenra represents the
sexual woman. In her second letter to Mina, she tells of the three marriage proposals that have come to her in one day, and the results of each. She
has turned down two men, and accepted the last, but feels badly about having to turn down two of her suitors. She proclaims, "Why can't they let a
girl marry three men, or as many as want her, and save all this trouble?" (61). From this passage, it can be assumed that Lucy desires sexual
relationship with all three men, as that is the result of marriage. Here lies the main difference between the two women. In the end Mina benefits
from her domesticity and life of service to men. Lucy, on the other hand, is deviate from social norms, and in turn suffers the consequences for her
own sexual aptitude. Dracula's deadly bite does not harm Mina due to her morals dictating that she continues to live as a human. Dracula soon
disappears from the scene, and Mina enjoys her marriage and bears a child. However, Lucy is not as lucky. She is described as a sexual monster
after her death. It is believed her sexuality that sealed her fate. It is clear that this is a statement about not only the roles of women in society, but also
about the fears of society. The good Victorian woman, represses her sexual desires and will lead a respectable life.

Themes Of Blood In Dracula
III. Meaning of Blood "She wants blood, and blood she must have or die."(Stoker 141) Blood is a precious liquid not only for humans but also for
the dead, especially vampires. It is both a substance and a cultural concept. Blood is a symbol for passion but also destruction, for cultural identity
and family, as Foucault said "one is 'of the same blood" (cited in Hughes, 139) and Stoker contributed "Blood is a too precious thing in these days of
dishonourable peace; and he glories of the great races are as a tale that is told."(34) Blood is one of the most powerful motives in Dracula. Stoker used
specifically that motive to address the taboo topic of sexuality and homosexuality. The use of blood as a symbol for sexual intercourse comes...show

Hughes points out that" Individual and racial health are dependent on pure and plentiful blood: depletion or contamination brings both personal
illness and racial decline" (140). The topics of sexuality, rape and homosexuality are addressed through Lucy, Mina and Jonathan. Lucy Westenra's
sexual appetite is expressed through her medical condition. She was constantly loosing blood because Dracula fed on her in her sleep. Stoker
implied while she was sleepwalking, she actually escaped to" enjoy the night's forbidden pleasures" (71). Victorians believed they should not fuse their
blood with those of another race, but Lucy did so with Dracula. She received four blood transfusions. The blood transfusions stand for sexual
intercourse "to transfer from full veins of one to the empty veins which pine for him."(Stoker 141). Hughes explained how "Lucy seemingly demands
sperm, but wants blood."( 141). She received blood transfusions from Arthur Holmwood, John Seward, Abraham Van Helsingand Quincey Morris but
Arthur's transfusion is particularly interesting. Only men gave blood, Nelson explained that a man's sexual drive was caused by nature and woman's
sexual drive should be focused on pregnancy without pleasure (9).

"You said you would the next time we came to our cabin in Nebraska." "Ok, I guess," she told the two twins "One day your Grandpa was going out

Character Analysis of Dracula
In the novel's world, Dracula has many mystical powers, some which has been shown only on several occasions and some which he uses for his daily
life. Dracula also has a very unique personality, which could tempt women and make them vulnerable. This means, Dracula could dominate every
human being individually, not as a group. His powers and personality has something in common. Count Dracula uses his powers and unique abilities as
a tool to ridicule religions and God's decisions and as a great threat to the mainstream society.
Count Dracula has the ability to seduce women, making them even more vulnerable by making them become openly sexual, and often make them fall
in love with him and join his side. Although his ability can be powerful, it can also become a weakness at some point because he possibly doesn't
have full control of his emotions. His motivation is to make his victims join his side either as a vampire by drinking the blood or as a human by
seduction and turn against the victim's friends and family, causing troubles for his opposition, which makes his seduction "power" a threat to the
society, in this case, the friends and relatives. The combination of this ability and his other abilities, to make himself younger and possibly hypnotism
as it was impossible to resist the Count's seduction, is considered as one of the biggest threats. For example, Dracula has succeeded in seducing Lucy
and Mina and tempted them both, resulting vampire Lucy to turn against Arthur

Reflection Of Dracula
The famous novel "Dracula" written by Irish writer Bram Stoker in the late XIX century still dominates the minds and imaginations of millions of
readers around the world. This book is not the first story to be written about vampires, but it has become a classic of the genre, its standard and was
the cause of the world obsession with "vampire" theme. "Ugly" and terrible desire frightens the modern reader. Wide public interest in horror
literature says that the ugly aesthetics became a kind of symbol of the new era. But at the same time, Bram Stoker touches a topic such as religion or
faith in God. "Dracula" tells us what can become the soul of a man if it will absorb the vice and sin. (Wolf, 2004) From the point of view of the
composition, "Dracula" is epistolary novel: the narrative is composed of letters and diaries, which gives it more...show more content...

How Does Bram Stoker Use Power In Dracula
Violence and Power Within Dracula's Grasp
Throughout many types of literature, violence exists to enhance the readers interest in order to add a sense of excitement or conflict to a novel. This
statement withholds much truthfulness due to the fact that without violence in a piece of literature such as Dracula by Bram Stoker, the plot would
not have the same impact if it was lacking violence. Dracula's power and evilness led to the violent happenings which began with the conflict of
Jonathan's inner struggle, as compared to the conflict which blossomed later on with good versus evil.
One case of violence that had occurred, not just for its own sake, happened in chapter seven,...show more content...
As far fetched as the idea of a man being scared to death may seem, the old man most likely could have been traumatized to this extent in relation to
how Mina noted in her journal about "Death", capitalizing the "D" in significance to that of some supernatural or higher power.
We as readers start to believe that this "Death" the old man had seen, could very well be Dracula himself.
Another example of violence transpiring for more than a sole purpose, is through the character of Jonathan Harker. Jonathan is struggling with an inner
conflict, and one of the supernatural; man versus himself and man versus the supernatural. His inner conflict is due to the fact that in his mind, he is a
prisoner in Castle Dracula, and there are no means of escape. Therefore, the struggle within himself is one of keeping his sanity and rational way of
thinking, since he is such a rational, business–minded man. However, the most obvious conflict derives from the physical and mental struggle with
Count Dracula. The novel sets a tone of good versus evil or the supernatural, which is directly related to the conflict. Accordingly, on June 29, the Count
tells Jonathan that this is his last day when he stated, "To–morrow, my friend, we must part"(pg.51). After the Count led him to the door
where the wolves were howling, he

Power In Dracula
'The Gothic world is fascinated by the struggle for power'. In light of this statement, discuss the ways in which writers present types of power. Gothic
writers are fascinated by power struggles, but often shock readers by reversing conventional power differences. Examples of this include the power of
rationality against religion, and the female voice and sexuality being powerful, highly controversial topics during the Victorian era. These power
struggles often reflect the writer's own experiences and views, for example Poe frequently presents power struggles between humans and the
supernatural due to losing his loved ones, and mental illness. Similarly, in 'Dracula', Stoker portrays the supernatural as powerful, but with strong sexual

Carter uses sexual dominance in 'The Bloody Chamber' as a metaphor for women's social inequality with "He in his London tailoring; she, bare as
a lamb chop". The separation of the pronoun "she" represents the isolation forced upon her by her overbearing husband. The girl is also
mentioned after the Marquis in this sentence, showing how she ranks after him and has no control now that she's married. Women are often seen
as passive as the Marquis assesses the girl with "the eyes of a connoisseur", implying that she is an object to be owned and lusted after. Sivyer
writes "the man assumes an active and dominant role whilst his bride is positioned as passive" . Her passivity is shown when she says "He made
me put on my choker", she was forced to do it and offered no resistance. The choker itself represents her captivity as it's similar to a collar, implying
that the Marquis is her owner, also exemplified as he calls her "my little nun". This condescension mocks the girl for her innocence, asserting the
Marquis's dominance, but also the possessive pronoun "my" shows ownership; he believes that his wife belongs to him. Interestingly, Dracula uses
similar possessive language to assert power over another male (Jonathan), exclaiming "This man belongs to me!" This declarative statement shows that
he has decided that Jonathan is his property, showing his desire for dominance and possession to exhibit his power. His wickedness is

Harker tends to become preoccupied with the fact that something strange is going on, as his personality remains the same, the thoughts he is
deliberating will soon impact him. As the nervous state of psychology is repressed, Harker soon feels entrapment as he states, "The Castle is a
veritable prison, and I am a prisoner" (Stoker 172).
When Harker announces his future demise, the affects of his actions are soon displayed throughout the story. Upon figuring out that he is now a
prisoner at the Counts mansion, his behaviors have been affected dramatically, "I rushed up and down the stairs, trying every door and peering out
every window I could find; but after a little the conviction of my helplessness overpowered all other feelings" (Stoker 172–173). The act of
determinism is when ones behavior is caused by physical events going on around them. Harker's behaviors are merely influenced by all the feverish
events occurring before him. Since paranoia is a thought process influenced heavily on anxiety or fear of an idea, it is demonstrated when his
paranoid thinking process has also caused a conspiracy in his behaviors as he feels like an entrapped prisoner.
The idea of suicide is shown throughout the end of chapter IV, as Harker try's to escape reality by jumping out the window. Harker's conscious mind
can no longer deal with all the mayhem going on around him as he states, "At least God's mercy is better than that of

Dracula And Gothic Essay
The Gothic genre does suppress vulnerable women. They are exploited in order to please the tyrannical male and feed his desires. When the women
is no longer of use, she is then discarded. The Gothic genre is described as 'formulaic" and one of the key features is a tyrannical male who abuses his
power to assert his dominance over a perceived futile women. Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' was written in time where women started to want more equal
rights and opportunities. For example, in the same year Dracula was published (1897), Millicent Fawcett founded 'The National Union of Women's

Lucy is not seen to be the ideal Victorian wife, "why can't they let a girl marry three men or as many that want her", due to her low morals and her
naivety towards the way a women was expected to act it allowed Dracula to exploit her. Stoker presents Lucy in a way that would be shocking and
unacceptable for a Victorian reader. Stoker insinuates that Lucy is fatherless because Stoker only refers to her father once in the book and it is in
the past tense, "Lucy's father, had the same habit he would get up in the night and dress himself", even if Lucy's father is alive it is clear that he has
had minimal involvement and impact on Lucy's life. Stoker could be suggesting that Lucy's lack of a patriarch has meant that she has a desire and
craving for one leading her to finding one where ever she could find it. When Dracula is removing blood from Lucy she is described as
"half–reclining" Stokers use of this word suggests that Dracula is not forcing her or even restraining her, it implies that she is accepting what is
taking place. Stoker goes as far as to imply that Lucy is enjoy the experience, "Her lips were parted... heavy gasps", this is very sexually suggestive
of a post climatic moment. It could be argued that at this moment she is conforming to the hierarchy of society by being submissive due to her

Theme Of Power In Dracula
First of all, before analysing the theme, it is necessary to clarify the notion of "dynamic of power". In fact, this denotes the dialectic interaction
between the subject possessing the power and the object which is influenced by this power. In literature, this liaison is expressed by the relations
between a master and a slave. For instance, the Russian writers Dostoevsky and Tolstoy explored the theme of the relations between a master and a
slave, an oppressor and an oppressed in their works. Since this theme has stirred the imagination of many writers, it is not surprising that the possibility
to expose this type of relations has attracted the filmmakers for the decades.
It is important to point out that such creative movement as German Expressionism...show more content...
Dracula in this film refers more to the Sympathetic Cycle (1987 – present) by the classification of Tim Kane. The films of this cycle show thevampire
with more sympathetic qualities, with thoughts, feelings, fears, and dreams. The sympathetic vampires of the recent films have developed into
misunderstood, tortured romantic figures or even ultimate romantic alpha–hero. Coppola's Dracula seems to be on the border of the Erotic and
Sympathetic cycles. Seduction and allure are still inherent to him, as well as his victims are ready to sacrifice, expecting gratification from the
master. The scenes of bite do not have sexual hints, they speak directly of sex. For example, this is the scene when Jonathan is attacked by the
Dracula's brides, who lick and kiss him before biting, and the victim endures pain, fear and sensual pleasure. When Dracula, transformed into a wolf,
attacks Lucy, he physically copulates with her. And again, we see that these relations develop with the consent of the victim as the attack arouses Lucy,
and she anticipates the vampire's visits. So, overall, each participant of the vampire–victim's relationship is not equal. One is superior (stronger, with a
hypnotic stare and other super–abilities, moreover, he is immortal) and another is subordinate (just a human–being, fragile and helpless). Nevertheless,
this inequality, the power, that a vampire, a master possesses and victim's eagerness to obey make these relations tempting for

Although Dracula never intended to have the positive effects on Jonathan Harker, they were still presented due to Jonathan Harker's will power. ("I

people, and more of a passion to do the right thing. My personal favorite qualities Dracula presented to Jonathan Harker were the qualities of nobility,
strength, and a fierce desire to do the right thing. Mina Harker, although not changed and possessed the most, was my favorite character because she
demonstrated several good qualities throughout the book. Some of the qualities she displayed were not all influenced by Dracula, such as her true
kindness and the passion of caring for people that were close to her, or not close to her. These two characteristics displayed in Mina Harker continued,
however, even when she was influenced by Dracula. In fact, these qualities often grew stronger when she was put under the influence of Dracula. (I

Dracula

  • 1. Dracula The people of the Philippines believe in a creature called the mandurugo, a vampiric creature that takes form of a beautiful girl by day, but grows wings and a hollow, thread like tongue used to suck the blood of the sleeping at night. The Cape region in Africa has the folklore of the impundulu, which has the ability to transform into a large taloned bird that can control thunder and lightning. Vampires are seen in stories and folklore throughout civilizations and generations. Even though people knew of vampires, Bram Stoker's novel made people fear them by terrifying his reader's with his persona Dracula. The Count has been known to be a very complex character with many odd quirks and traits. Nowadays these have been changed or kept by...show more content... Dracula made an appearance in Joss Whedon's TV show and was able to control human minds. A major change is how vampires react in sunlight. In the beginning of Dracula we are to believe that he can only go out at night. Later on Jonathan Harker believes he saw Dracula on the streets of Whitby during the day. Van Helsing later confirms that vampires are only weakened by sunlight. The vampires in the Patricia Waddell books and the Buffy series are unable to step foot in daylight without burning up. However in Waddell's books the vamps can easily be revived. These two adjustments to the original make sunlight an instant death to a vamp instead of just being weakened. Surprisingly the vampires of the Twilight series remain closest to Stoker's original because even though they sparkle in daylight they still walk around during the day. The killing of vampires has changed in books and TV shows and even varies throughout the book Dracula. Dracula's wives are killed in the traditional way, a wooden stake through the heart, but Dracula is put to rest with two knives. Today vampires can be killed with anything, but a major change is the use of a silver stake in many different series. The way vampires die has also changed. Killing a vampire in True Blood is far removed from wooden stakes and dust, the process of killing a vampire is brutal and the vampire melts into a gruesome pulp. Anne Rice's vampire Lestat had his Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Dracula Reflection When you hear the word Dracula, what words do you associate with him? Dead, scary, vampire? For most, it would be all of the above. However, when speaking about Dracula, no one hardly utter the word man. Dracual depiction drew a fine line of him being both man and monster, but can we really say that he is of man when his able to turn into different creatures? Dracula's complex personality and human form will be discussed throughly in this essay, while also touching on the subject of his sexual needs and wants. When Stoker's character, Dracula is first described in the novel he is described as having a very stong face, thin nose, lofty forehead, massive eyebrows and a rather cruel looking mouth and moustache (22). Reading a description...show more content... Transforming into other creatures is unnatural, it is of the evil or in this case the undead for Dracula. The undead was quite prevalent in this novel because the blood sucking vampire, Dracula would feed on the living until he they finally became dead, then turing into a vampire themseleves. The fact that we have a man who seems normal on the surface is what makes the Dracual character so uncanning. He seems like an average person, despite the way he looks at first, but after understanding what he is capable of we almost feel taunted and confused because he is in fact a monster and had been the entire time. Uncanning means something that is familiar yet unfamiliar at the same time and is shown to of unnatural behavior or acts. Dracula's normal interaction with Jonathan Harker made us view him as a man, but once his revealed as sleeping in a box, climbing walls, powerful force over animals the distinction of him being relatble to us is no longer there. So to interpret Dracula from a psychoanalytical point of view, many acts of sex appears in the story. Dracula's mean of surving is a significant example. In order to live, he has to suck blood from another living being. In the story, Dracula had his attraction to the female characters to sustain off of, which once again makes him seem more like a man to have sexual interaction with the female characters. He became the wedge in many of the character relationships. Dracula came Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Theme Of Religion In Dracula As we all know Dracula not only has to do with the horror, blood and vampires, but religion, christianity and the Victorian society that play a huge role in the story. These topics all have a reasonable amount of influence on how Dracula was written, and how the various themes in Dracula were developed. The input of religion is seen from the start all the way to the ending no doubt about it. In addition, there are also various examples of how the Victorian society also mixed in with religion, like the ideas of people back then and what they thought was wrong and right due to society's beliefs . The exploration of thoughts and ideas by all the characters regarding what is wrong and right due to society and religion is also easily seen throughout the story. In the novel Dracula, written by Bram Stoker, the Victorian society influenced overall in the way it was written, and how their beliefs at this time of Christianity are being explored to these new ideas. From the very beginning of the novel the superstition and Christian belief appear very clearly. Countless numbers of people during the Victorian era believed in all kinds of superstitions. In the beginning when Jonathan is leaving his hotel and about to go meet up with Dracula a woman gives him a crucifix, "It is the eve of St. George's Day. Do you not know that tonight, when the clock strikes midnight, all the evil things in the world will have full sway? Do you know where you are going, and what you are going to?" • 4. Dracula Influences Dracula: Influences of the Present and Past Vampires are not completely fictional. In the late 1890s Bram Stoker takes historical information and old European folktales to create famous Gothic novels like Dracula; Before writing Dracula, he studied for eight years stories of vampires. The title of Stoker's story has historical significance to Vlad Dracul III, a Wallachian ruler who impaled his victims on stakes.Bram Stoker also was influenced by his lifetime, before the publication of Dracula, Gothic and Epistolary novels were on the rise consequently why Dracula is classified as both. Stoker's novels show his ideals as well as views on social and political reforms during the Victorian era. Moreover, the threats of female sexuality plagued Victorian anxieties, morals were being questioned. At this time, Victorians were believed to be morally progressing and can now be seen as a more prudish time. During this time book publishers often altered words that might be inappropriate. Bram Stoker's Dracula establishes the seminal view of vampires that has been modified throughout the ages to the now idealized vampire. In Bram Stoker's novel, he creates the first ideal look of a vampire. At the beginning of the story, Jonathan Harker travels to Transylvania to go the Count's castle on business. Jonathan along the way has strange encounters with townspeople about where he is traveling. Stoker early in the book draws from our reference of the now traditional vampire and states in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Essay On Dracula Movie review of Dracula Bela Lugosi is arguably the most classic example of an actor taking on a vampire role. However, during 1931 when the universal studio was casting the 1931's Dracula, Lugosi could only barely speak English, and therefore almost lost his chance at playing the iconic part ("Dracula (1931 English–Language Film"). Nonetheless his accents and costumes, which has become the classic look of the vampire, he himself was so typecast in his role that he was actually buried after his death in his Dracula costume. Certainly, it is Lugosi's performance that makes Tod Browning's film such an influential Hollywood picture. Overall, I will give it a 3 star out of 5, compared with the older version film of Dracula, because of the dialogues and sounds, the plot is much easier for the audiences to understand, without any editing or background music the horror of the film is not inferior to...show more content... The film started with Renfield went to Dracula's castle in Transylvania, and how he was killed by Dracula. During the scene, the film used the bats to represent he became undead. Later on, Dracula with his maids and Renfield went to London and met with Lucy, her father and her fiance in the theater. During that night, Dracula went to Lucy's room to suck her blood as a bat. Thus, she became very sick also with bad dreams every night. Meanwhile, her dad invited a professor to help Lucy, which is Dr. Van Helsing. Very soon they found out Dracula is the vampire whom suck her blood and control her mind, then they came up with a plan to kill him. At the end, they found Dracula in a coffin and killed him Lucy was safe at the end. Since the film was produced in 1931 the genre of Gothic horror was new to people, the happy will ending makes people feel Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Dracula, By Bram Stoker The story of Dracula is well documented and has stood the test of time since it's Victorian age creation. More times than not, literature writings are a reflection of the era from which they are produced. In the case of Dracula, Vampire literature expresses the fears of a society. Which leads me to the topic I chose to review: sexuality. TheVictorian Era was viewed as a period diluted in intense sexual repression and I believe that Dracula effectively exploited this as the fear of sexuality was commonplace in the society. In this paper I will examine Bram Stoker's Dracula and highlight his use of sexuality. I will analysis the female sexuality that is prevalent throughout the book, the complexities are at work within the text, and the...show more content... This passage characterizes Mina's obedience to her spouse Johnathan, and introduces her as the modest woman. Lucy Westenra represents the sexual woman. In her second letter to Mina, she tells of the three marriage proposals that have come to her in one day, and the results of each. She has turned down two men, and accepted the last, but feels badly about having to turn down two of her suitors. She proclaims, "Why can't they let a girl marry three men, or as many as want her, and save all this trouble?" (61). From this passage, it can be assumed that Lucy desires sexual relationship with all three men, as that is the result of marriage. Here lies the main difference between the two women. In the end Mina benefits from her domesticity and life of service to men. Lucy, on the other hand, is deviate from social norms, and in turn suffers the consequences for her own sexual aptitude. Dracula's deadly bite does not harm Mina due to her morals dictating that she continues to live as a human. Dracula soon disappears from the scene, and Mina enjoys her marriage and bears a child. However, Lucy is not as lucky. She is described as a sexual monster after her death. It is believed her sexuality that sealed her fate. It is clear that this is a statement about not only the roles of women in society, but also about the fears of society. The good Victorian woman, represses her sexual desires and will lead a respectable life. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Themes Of Blood In Dracula III. Meaning of Blood "She wants blood, and blood she must have or die."(Stoker 141) Blood is a precious liquid not only for humans but also for the dead, especially vampires. It is both a substance and a cultural concept. Blood is a symbol for passion but also destruction, for cultural identity and family, as Foucault said "one is 'of the same blood" (cited in Hughes, 139) and Stoker contributed "Blood is a too precious thing in these days of dishonourable peace; and he glories of the great races are as a tale that is told."(34) Blood is one of the most powerful motives in Dracula. Stoker used specifically that motive to address the taboo topic of sexuality and homosexuality. The use of blood as a symbol for sexual intercourse comes...show more content... Hughes points out that" Individual and racial health are dependent on pure and plentiful blood: depletion or contamination brings both personal illness and racial decline" (140). The topics of sexuality, rape and homosexuality are addressed through Lucy, Mina and Jonathan. Lucy Westenra's sexual appetite is expressed through her medical condition. She was constantly loosing blood because Dracula fed on her in her sleep. Stoker implied while she was sleepwalking, she actually escaped to" enjoy the night's forbidden pleasures" (71). Victorians believed they should not fuse their blood with those of another race, but Lucy did so with Dracula. She received four blood transfusions. The blood transfusions stand for sexual intercourse "to transfer from full veins of one to the empty veins which pine for him."(Stoker 141). Hughes explained how "Lucy seemingly demands sperm, but wants blood."( 141). She received blood transfusions from Arthur Holmwood, John Seward, Abraham Van Helsingand Quincey Morris but Arthur's transfusion is particularly interesting. Only men gave blood, Nelson explained that a man's sexual drive was caused by nature and woman's sexual drive should be focused on pregnancy without pleasure (9). Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Narrative Essay On Dracula Count Dracula "Max, Gypsy come out of the woods and back in the cabin Count Dracula is up!!!" yelled their Mom. "Coming!" Max yelled and the two twins ran back to their cabin. "Mom, can you tell us about the story of Grandpa Mark and his encounter with Count Dracula?" asked Max "You said you would the next time we came to our cabin in Nebraska." "Ok, I guess," she told the two twins "One day your Grandpa was going out in the woods to hunt for deer, he came upon a deer dead on the ground. He looked down at the deer to see what looked like two fang marks dung into the side of the deer. Wondering what had happened he looked around to find a trail of blood. When he followed the trail of blood to a dark cave. When he heard a sudden whoosh from inside and screeching the hair on the back of his neck began to rise. He walked in with his gun pointed forward. When he saw a shadow of a monster on the wall, he pointed the gun towards the shadow when a rat crawled out. Thinking of how silly he had been thinking there was something weird in the cave as he was walking out he suddenly was picked off the ground and banged against the wall falling unconscious. When he woke he found two red eyes staring straight at him. The eyes were nothing compared to the bats glistening fangs and huge size. He looked to see his gun behind his back. Slowly he picked it up, shot the bat and ran for all he was worth." Finishing the story she told the two it was time to go to bed. "Okay, Mom," Gypsy said. As Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Character Analysis of Dracula In the novel's world, Dracula has many mystical powers, some which has been shown only on several occasions and some which he uses for his daily life. Dracula also has a very unique personality, which could tempt women and make them vulnerable. This means, Dracula could dominate every human being individually, not as a group. His powers and personality has something in common. Count Dracula uses his powers and unique abilities as a tool to ridicule religions and God's decisions and as a great threat to the mainstream society. Count Dracula has the ability to seduce women, making them even more vulnerable by making them become openly sexual, and often make them fall in love with him and join his side. Although his ability can be powerful, it can also become a weakness at some point because he possibly doesn't have full control of his emotions. His motivation is to make his victims join his side either as a vampire by drinking the blood or as a human by seduction and turn against the victim's friends and family, causing troubles for his opposition, which makes his seduction "power" a threat to the society, in this case, the friends and relatives. The combination of this ability and his other abilities, to make himself younger and possibly hypnotism as it was impossible to resist the Count's seduction, is considered as one of the biggest threats. For example, Dracula has succeeded in seducing Lucy and Mina and tempted them both, resulting vampire Lucy to turn against Arthur Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Reflection Of Dracula The famous novel "Dracula" written by Irish writer Bram Stoker in the late XIX century still dominates the minds and imaginations of millions of readers around the world. This book is not the first story to be written about vampires, but it has become a classic of the genre, its standard and was the cause of the world obsession with "vampire" theme. "Ugly" and terrible desire frightens the modern reader. Wide public interest in horror literature says that the ugly aesthetics became a kind of symbol of the new era. But at the same time, Bram Stoker touches a topic such as religion or faith in God. "Dracula" tells us what can become the soul of a man if it will absorb the vice and sin. • 12. How Does Bram Stoker Use Power In Dracula Violence and Power Within Dracula's Grasp Throughout many types of literature, violence exists to enhance the readers interest in order to add a sense of excitement or conflict to a novel. This statement withholds much truthfulness due to the fact that without violence in a piece of literature such as Dracula by Bram Stoker, the plot would not have the same impact if it was lacking violence. Dracula's power and evilness led to the violent happenings which began with the conflict of Jonathan's inner struggle, as compared to the conflict which blossomed later on with good versus evil. One case of violence that had occurred, not just for its own sake, happened in chapter seven,...show more content... As far fetched as the idea of a man being scared to death may seem, the old man most likely could have been traumatized to this extent in relation to how Mina noted in her journal about "Death", capitalizing the "D" in significance to that of some supernatural or higher power. We as readers start to believe that this "Death" the old man had seen, could very well be Dracula himself. Another example of violence transpiring for more than a sole purpose, is through the character of Jonathan Harker. Jonathan is struggling with an inner conflict, and one of the supernatural; man versus himself and man versus the supernatural. His inner conflict is due to the fact that in his mind, he is a prisoner in Castle Dracula, and there are no means of escape. Therefore, the struggle within himself is one of keeping his sanity and rational way of thinking, since he is such a rational, business–minded man. However, the most obvious conflict derives from the physical and mental struggle with Count Dracula. The novel sets a tone of good versus evil or the supernatural, which is directly related to the conflict. Accordingly, on June 29, the Count tells Jonathan that this is his last day when he stated, "To–morrow, my friend, we must part"(pg.51). After the Count led him to the door where the wolves were howling, he Get more content on HelpWriting.net

This novel is portrayed by an antagonist character known as Count Dracula. He has been dead for centuries yet he may never die. He has a peculiar power of hypnotic fascination but he is weak in god's daylight. He is immortal as long as he is able to drink blood from the living. He can change his form into a wolf, a bat or a puff of smoke. Dracula get in touch with Jonathan Harker through a real estate transaction. • 15. Power In Dracula 'The Gothic world is fascinated by the struggle for power'. In light of this statement, discuss the ways in which writers present types of power. Gothic writers are fascinated by power struggles, but often shock readers by reversing conventional power differences. Examples of this include the power of rationality against religion, and the female voice and sexuality being powerful, highly controversial topics during the Victorian era. These power struggles often reflect the writer's own experiences and views, for example Poe frequently presents power struggles between humans and the supernatural due to losing his loved ones, and mental illness. Similarly, in 'Dracula', Stoker portrays the supernatural as powerful, but with strong sexual undertones,...show more content... Carter uses sexual dominance in 'The Bloody Chamber' as a metaphor for women's social inequality with "He in his London tailoring; she, bare as a lamb chop". The separation of the pronoun "she" represents the isolation forced upon her by her overbearing husband. The girl is also mentioned after the Marquis in this sentence, showing how she ranks after him and has no control now that she's married. Women are often seen as passive as the Marquis assesses the girl with "the eyes of a connoisseur", implying that she is an object to be owned and lusted after. Sivyer writes "the man assumes an active and dominant role whilst his bride is positioned as passive" . Her passivity is shown when she says "He made me put on my choker", she was forced to do it and offered no resistance. The choker itself represents her captivity as it's similar to a collar, implying that the Marquis is her owner, also exemplified as he calls her "my little nun". This condescension mocks the girl for her innocence, asserting the Marquis's dominance, but also the possessive pronoun "my" shows ownership; he believes that his wife belongs to him. Interestingly, Dracula uses similar possessive language to assert power over another male (Jonathan), exclaiming "This man belongs to me!" This declarative statement shows that he has decided that Jonathan is his property, showing his desire for dominance and possession to exhibit his power. His wickedness is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. In the story "Dracula", composed by Bram Stoker, the literature of psychology is well presented. "Dracula" was composed in 1897, the time in which psychology was first being introduced. The novel "Dracula" was written into an epistolary formation known as a series of letters, newspaper clippings, and diary entries. Jonathan Harker, a young lawyer, travels to Transylvania to presume a real estate transaction with the CountDracula. Amongst his arrival he suspects peculiar activities occurring. Bram Stoker's "Dracula" symbolizes the functions of the human mind and how paranoia affects characters, which marks the beginning of the psychological era. A severe economic depression, as well as the beginning of psychology as a social science,...show more content... Harker tends to become preoccupied with the fact that something strange is going on, as his personality remains the same, the thoughts he is deliberating will soon impact him. As the nervous state of psychology is repressed, Harker soon feels entrapment as he states, "The Castle is a veritable prison, and I am a prisoner" (Stoker 172). When Harker announces his future demise, the affects of his actions are soon displayed throughout the story. Upon figuring out that he is now a prisoner at the Counts mansion, his behaviors have been affected dramatically, "I rushed up and down the stairs, trying every door and peering out every window I could find; but after a little the conviction of my helplessness overpowered all other feelings" (Stoker 172–173). The act of determinism is when ones behavior is caused by physical events going on around them. Harker's behaviors are merely influenced by all the feverish events occurring before him. Since paranoia is a thought process influenced heavily on anxiety or fear of an idea, it is demonstrated when his paranoid thinking process has also caused a conspiracy in his behaviors as he feels like an entrapped prisoner. The idea of suicide is shown throughout the end of chapter IV, as Harker try's to escape reality by jumping out the window. Harker's conscious mind can no longer deal with all the mayhem going on around him as he states, "At least God's mercy is better than that of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Dracula And Gothic Essay The Gothic genre does suppress vulnerable women. They are exploited in order to please the tyrannical male and feed his desires. When the women is no longer of use, she is then discarded. The Gothic genre is described as 'formulaic" and one of the key features is a tyrannical male who abuses his power to assert his dominance over a perceived futile women. Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' was written in time where women started to want more equal rights and opportunities. For example, in the same year Dracula was published (1897), Millicent Fawcett founded 'The National Union of Women's Suffrage'. Bram Stoker feared the decline of the patriarchal figure and could have created 'Dracula' as an attempt to scaremonger the public into thinking what would...show more content... Lucy is not seen to be the ideal Victorian wife, "why can't they let a girl marry three men or as many that want her", due to her low morals and her naivety towards the way a women was expected to act it allowed Dracula to exploit her. Stoker presents Lucy in a way that would be shocking and unacceptable for a Victorian reader. Stoker insinuates that Lucy is fatherless because Stoker only refers to her father once in the book and it is in the past tense, "Lucy's father, had the same habit he would get up in the night and dress himself", even if Lucy's father is alive it is clear that he has had minimal involvement and impact on Lucy's life. Stoker could be suggesting that Lucy's lack of a patriarch has meant that she has a desire and craving for one leading her to finding one where ever she could find it. When Dracula is removing blood from Lucy she is described as "half–reclining" Stokers use of this word suggests that Dracula is not forcing her or even restraining her, it implies that she is accepting what is taking place. Stoker goes as far as to imply that Lucy is enjoy the experience, "Her lips were parted... heavy gasps", this is very sexually suggestive of a post climatic moment. It could be argued that at this moment she is conforming to the hierarchy of society by being submissive due to her possible positive "father complex" (created by Sigmund Feud and Carl Jung), so is therefore acting how a Victorian should by Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Theme Of Power In Dracula First of all, before analysing the theme, it is necessary to clarify the notion of "dynamic of power". In fact, this denotes the dialectic interaction between the subject possessing the power and the object which is influenced by this power. In literature, this liaison is expressed by the relations between a master and a slave. For instance, the Russian writers Dostoevsky and Tolstoy explored the theme of the relations between a master and a slave, an oppressor and an oppressed in their works. Since this theme has stirred the imagination of many writers, it is not surprising that the possibility to expose this type of relations has attracted the filmmakers for the decades. It is important to point out that such creative movement as German Expressionism...show more content... Dracula in this film refers more to the Sympathetic Cycle (1987 – present) by the classification of Tim Kane. The films of this cycle show thevampire with more sympathetic qualities, with thoughts, feelings, fears, and dreams. The sympathetic vampires of the recent films have developed into misunderstood, tortured romantic figures or even ultimate romantic alpha–hero. Coppola's Dracula seems to be on the border of the Erotic and Sympathetic cycles. Seduction and allure are still inherent to him, as well as his victims are ready to sacrifice, expecting gratification from the master. The scenes of bite do not have sexual hints, they speak directly of sex. For example, this is the scene when Jonathan is attacked by the Dracula's brides, who lick and kiss him before biting, and the victim endures pain, fear and sensual pleasure. When Dracula, transformed into a wolf, attacks Lucy, he physically copulates with her. And again, we see that these relations develop with the consent of the victim as the attack arouses Lucy, and she anticipates the vampire's visits. So, overall, each participant of the vampire–victim's relationship is not equal. One is superior (stronger, with a hypnotic stare and other super–abilities, moreover, he is immortal) and another is subordinate (just a human–being, fragile and helpless). Nevertheless, this inequality, the power, that a vampire, a master possesses and victim's eagerness to obey make these relations tempting for Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Dracula Dracula By Emily Braren Block 3 Dracula has multi–personalities in the novel Dracula, such as charming when he needed to be charming; and then cruel, nasty, and hostile, at other times. Dracula's "force", you could say, had effect on the personalities of several people. Dracula's main themes he brought out in people were the kind, noble, and brave sides of people, and the more unpleasant sides of people, such as the vicious, easily disliked, and possessed sides of people. Some last good effects put upon Jonathan Harker by Dracula included a better understanding of people, and more of a passion to do the right thing. My personal favorite qualities Dracula presented to Jonathan Harker were the qualities of nobility, strength, and a fierce desire to do the right thing. Mina Harker, although not changed and possessed the most, was my favorite character because she demonstrated several good qualities throughout the book. Some of the qualities she displayed were not all influenced by Dracula, such as her true kindness and the passion of caring for people that were close to her, or not close to her. These two characteristics displayed in Mina Harker continued, however, even when she was influenced by Dracula. In fact, these qualities often grew stronger when she was put under the influence of Dracula. (I know you must fight– and you must destroy even as you destroyed the fake Lucy..." Dracula page 328). Throughout the story, Mina wanted to help, and she showed several times her strength against Dracula, and her passion of doing the right thing, such as offering herself to be killed if she was possessed and turned into a full vampire and channeling the evil, demonized spirits of Dracula through herself to locate the vampire, Count Dracula Get more content on HelpWriting.net
