One of the bestexamplesof aradio
stationthat relatestotheiraudience is
Gaydiosince theyare specificallyaiming
for the LGBT audience of the United
Kingdom. Gaydiobecame the firstLGBT
FM radioservice whenitfirstlaunchedinJune 2010, thoughthe stationwascreatedback in 2006 as
a temporaryradiostationup andtill 2010. The station wentthroughmultiplere-appearancesuntil
the stationbecame full time on18th
June 2010, thiswasonlya regional radiostationasitonly

afteracquiringa DAB Radiolicence.Gaydiocoversnationwidebybroadcastingtothe UK’sbiggest
citiessuchas GreaterLondon,Glasgow,Birminghamand GreaterManchesteras well asgiving
anyone notin the UK an opportunitytolistenbychoosingthe “Restof the World”option.Gaydiois
nowthe onlytraditional broadcastingservice aimingataLGBT audience,attracting850,000 listeners
permonth, whichalsomakesit one of the largestLGBT Platformsinthe UK. Since the stationis
primarilytargetingaspecificaudience,itmeansthe stationcanadjustthe contentspecificallyforthe
target audience,soduringthe showthe listenerwouldexpectanewsbulletineveryhalf hour/hour
specificallyregardingthe LGBT alongwithHeadlines.Gaydioalsofeaturesanewsprogramme called
“The Exchange”whichbroadcastsfrom8:00pm to 10:00pm, Monday to Fridayas itfocusesonnews

The BBC isthe PublicService broadcasterforthe United
Kingdomwith atotal of 59 radiosworldwide.Though
nationallywe have 11radioswhichhave differentaimson
tryingto attract and entertaintheirtargetaudience,for
example Radio1aimsfor a youngerandlowerclass
audience whereasRadio4aimsfora muchmature and
higherclassaudience incomparison. There are alsothe local Radiostationswithexamplessuchas
Belfast,Birmingham,GlasgowandManchesterthoughthe mostpopularradiostations(excluding5
live and 5 live extrawhichare broadcastedfrommediacity) are broadcastedfrombasesinLondon.
The style of newsthat ispresentedonaPublicService radiostationcanbe alsobe coveredona
Commercial radiostationandvice-versa.TakingRadio1as an example, since the radiostationis
aimingfora much youngeraudience andalowersocial class(PrimarilyC2toE) and thoughthe BBC’s
contentisavailable foreveryone. The audience shouldexpecttohearnewsthat that opento a
broad range of younglistenersthoughthe newsthatiscoveredbythese radiostationsisopento

Reports,Worldnewsaswell asnational as forexample fromthe 28th

Commercial Radiobroadcastingisradioprogrammingwhichisspecifically
ownedbya private cooperate mediawhichmakestheirmoneyby
airingradioadvertisements.The more popularthe radiostation,the
greaterthe area it broadcaststoo thoughthese Radiostationsare
usuallybroadcasted nationallyinsteadof internationallyunlikePublic
Service.The RadiostationCapital FMspecificallybroadcaststothe
UnitedKingdom,theyare currentlyownedbyGlobal Radio(England) andCommunicorp(Restof the
UK). The radiostationspecificallyattractsa youngeraudience andlowersocial class(14 to 34 age
groupas well asC2 to E) than otherCommercial RadiostationssuchasRadioX, Heartor Magic due
to the contenttheyprovide,thisbeingcontemporaryhitmusic,newsandshowbiz.Fromthiswe can
see that the radiostationisaimingfora lowersocial classasthe higherclassare not interestedin
celebritynews. The newsprogramme whichistakenfromthe Capital FMradioin Manchester

Jingle Bell ball whichisannouncedaroundChristmas time everyyear. Thoughlistenersmayexpect
the radio stationtohave lessnewsthanitscompetitorsastheyrequire the space foradvertisements
and contentthatentertainstheiraudience.
Local Radioare radiostationsthatare small scale are only
broadcastedtothe local area,these stationsare usuallyhelped
out fromvolunteersandreflectadiverse mix of culturesand
interests andprovidedlocallyproducedcontent.Anexample a
of a Local Radiostationwouldbe SalfordCityRadioasthisisa
radiostationbasedinthe city of Salfordand onlybroadcaststo
the Salfordarea meaninganyone outside thisareawill notbe
able to tune in.These radiostationsare usuallyrunona not-for-
profitbasisand bringcommunitybenefitssuchasLocal CommunityNewsandDiscussion. The target
audience wouldbe the people whofall underthisbroadcastingarea, anddependingonhow upper
classor lowerclassthe areais can dependonthe formof newsisbroadcasted, thoughthe radio
stationwouldtryto make the contentavailable toanyone whoisable tolistentoit. The newsthe
listenersshouldexpecttohearisusuallyregardinglocal newsaroundthe broadcastingarea,trafficis
a good example of local newsasthe radiostationare able to informthe communityroadwork’sor
diversions.Thiswouldbe difficultforacommercial radiostationtocover theywouldnothave
enoughtocover all trafficnewsmeaningtheywouldjusthave tofocuson the majorproblems
regardingthe area. With the communityradiostation, youwouldexpectthemtobe onpar witha

Hospital Radioisa form of CommunityRadiowhichisspecificallyproducedforthe patientsof that
hospital.Hospital radiohasbeenseenasaway to benefitpatientsbyliftingtheirmoodandaiding
theirrecovery. Thoughhospital radioare staffedandmanagedbyvolunteers,thisisseenasa good
wayof experience assome notable radiopresentersstartedinHospital suchasChrisMoyles and
Karl Pilkington. Similartoa Local radiostation, these are seenasnot-for-profitmeaninganyprofit

can hospital toget treated, sothe targetaudience wouldonlybe the inpatientsinside the hospital.
Thismeanspatientscanexpect newsregardingnumeroustopicssuchas World,Political andMedical
news. Ashospital newsisonly broadcasted internally, thismeanstheycanuse the radioas an
opportunitytoreportnewsregardingthe hospital itself.Ibelieveinordertokeeptheirpatientsand
theirlistenersuptodate withthe currentnews;theywouldhave topresentanhourlynewsbulletin
to maintainthe flowastheydo notwant the newsbulletintointerruptthe programmesflow.
Small scale radiostationsare radiostationsthat only have a small broadcastingarea,a universityor
a college wouldbe seenasexamplesasthese are smallerincomparisontoa local radiostationand
the productionvalue of these radiostationsare ona much smallerscale incomparisontolocal and
communitystations.AsaUniversityora college canbe recognisedasa small scale radiostation, this
meansthat the presentersorthe people whohelpoutare usuallyvolunteeringfromthe local

these styles of radiostations, youwouldexpecttohearnewsthateitherrelatestothe local areaor

Studentswouldbe the maintargetaudience of thisradiostationsince thatiswhere the radiois
beingbroadcastedthoughstudentscancome fromdifferentbackgroundssothismayaffectthe

as Political,Sportandworldnews.Showbizcanalsobe notedas there are a high percentage of
studentswhoenjoyCelebrityprogrammesaswell asCelebritynews. Thoughitisunsure whenthe

There are manyformsof Regional andNational Radiostations, these come inall formssuchasPublic
Service,Commercialorcommunityradiostations. A regional radiostationwouldbe radiostation
that isspecificallyaimingforaparticularregion,usuallythereare commercial andpublicsousing
Manchesteras an example youwouldhave BBCRadioManchesteralongwith Capital Manchester,
boththese radiostationare regional meaninganyone outside thisregionwill notbe able totune
intothese radiostations.A benefitof a regional newsstationwouldbe the newswill be targeting
anyone whofallsunderthisregionfromanysocial classor age meaningthe contentisopento
everyone;aregional radiostationwouldalsobe able reportonnewsthathas happenedwithinthe
regionsuchSportsnews,Political oranythingregardingthe region.Thoughhow the newsis
presentedcandifferdependingonwhetherthe stationispublicservice orcommercial as
commercial hasto make time foradvertisementswhereaspublicservicedoesnot.Nationalonthe
otherhand isavailable foranyone inthe specificcountry, forexamplethe UnitedKingdom. The UK
has manyformsof radiostationsfromour ownPublicService radiotoCommercial Radios. The
difference here being thatthe targetaudience hasvastlywidenedincomparison,Inadditiontothis,
dependingonthe style of radiostationdependsonthe formatof news, forexample Radio4would
covermore political andhigherclassnewscomparedtoRadio1. Though thismeansthatinsteadof
focusingonregional news, theseradiostationswouldprimaryfocuson National aswell asWorld
news,alongwithstyle of newsthattargetstheirintendedaudience.Anexampleof acommercial
radiostationthat isnationwide wouldbe RadioXas itbroadcasts everywhere inthe UK,from

Scotlandto Englandto walestoNorthern Ireland. The formatof newsthatthe audience should
expectwouldbe supportedfromthe targetaudienceandsince RadioXplaysrock music, the style of
newswouldbe aimedtowardslistenerswhoenjoyrockmusic,thoughtheywouldalsoinclude hard
newstopicsuchas worldandnational newsstories.
Withthe progressionof technology, listeningtothe radiohas neverbeeneasieraswe are able to
streamradiofrom our computersorour mobile phoneswiththe use of the internet. We are also
listentopreviousshowswiththe use of ondemandnetworkssuchasBBC iPlayerwhichcanbe
accessed24/7, thismeansanyone cankeepupto date withthe newsor radiobroadcasts where
evertheyare if they missthe show. An example of anInternetRadiostationwouldbe Absolute
Radiowhichisa popularrockradio stationwhichbroadcastsacrossthe UK ina numberof different
ways, one example isviathe internetwhichgivesthe listenerthe opportunitytopause,playandre-
listentotheirfavourite radiostation. Youdochoose the areaof broadcastinglike youcando on
otherradiostationswhichshowsusthat thisisa national broadcast,meaningthe intended
demographicwouldbe the .Since the radiostationisan adultcontemporarybroadcast, ittellsus
whothe intendedtargetaudience withthe targetaudience beinganolder andmature audience as
opposedtoa stationlike Radio1 witha lowerage targetaudience. Ibelieve the stationisaimingfor
a lowerclassdemographic(fromC2to E) as upperclass people usuallylistentoradiostationssimilar
to Radio3/Classical FMand Radio4 as these targetthe upperclassdue to their calmand
informational content. Lookingatthe schedule forAbsolute radio, there isnonewsonlyprogramme
whichsuggeststhateach show includesanhourlynewsbulletinwhichinformsthe audience of the
latestheadlineswhile keepingtothe targetedaudience,withthe additionof rockrelatednews.
Anotherwayto tune intoabsolute radio isbythe use of satelliteradiowhichbroadcastsnationwide
whichtransmitsthe signalseverywhere,youwouldexpecttosee these radiosinvehiclesorportable
radio’swhichisseenasthe mostcommonway of listeningtothe radio.Lastlyisthe wayof accessing
Absolute RadioviaCable TV whichgivesthe stationthe opportunitytobroadcastintothe listener’s
home,or intoa bar or a business.Thisopensupthe opportunitytomanypeople asthere are
numerouswaysof tuningintothe stationwhichallowsthe radiostationtoattract more listeners
and growas a station, withthe exampleof the sisterchannelssuchasabsolute 60s/70s/80s etc.
Withthe a wide opportunity of tuningintothe station, opensupawideropportunityof beingkept
up to date withthe latestnews.
