SHAPE undertook an extensive refurbishment of an existing clinical and office space within Building 1, Level 5 of The Canberra Hospital to fit out a 60 bed inpatient unit. The refurbishment involved planning six shutdowns of building systems to replace switchboards while minimizing disruption to hospital operations. SHAPE completed the 2,400 square meter project on time, on budget, and prioritized safety and infection control through intense planning, constant communication and collaboration with hospital management and staff.

The Canberra Hospital Building 1, Level 5 Project Deliverables:
OVERVIEW
SHAPE was engaged by
repeat client, ACT Health
to undertake an extensive
refurbishment to the existing
clinical and office space within
Building one, level five at the
Canberra Hospital. The aim
of the project was to fitout an
inpatient unit to accommodate
60 bed spaces. The key client
value was to ensure constant
communication with the
client during the construction
and also take into account
care the care of patients and
implementing infection control
measures.
MINIMAL DISRUPTION
Based on past experience
working within clinical spaces,
SHAPE was aware of the
complexity of working within
a live hospital environment
and meeting strict timeframes
for noisy works. This project
required the execution of
six shutdowns of varying
complexities, affecting
multiple floors in the tower
block, in order to disconnect
and reconnect the newly
installed switchboards on
level five. SHAPE managed
these shutdowns by involving
department representatives
from all affected floors in
the hospital and exhaustive
investigations. All shutdowns
were successfully executed
with minimal disruption to the
hospital operations and its
occupants.
SAFETY FIRST
Noise, dirt, dust and
obstruction had to be kept
to the absolute minimum.
Intense planning, constant
communications and a
collaborative approach were
the answer to ensure a safe
working environment. SHAPE
successfully delivered a first
class refurbishment that was
delivered on time, on budget
and the key client value.
These timeframes were
developed with the input of
hospital management and
communicated and monitored
in frequent meetings scheduled
throughout the project.
