Resources – A Quantitative Survey with Students

Research Gap & Research Question
Which success factors are identified by students that lead to a higher degree
of inclination to use OER?
A Maturity Model for Open Educational Resources in Higher Education Institutions| Reinken et al.
Acceptance and use of OER at higher education institutions is low.
Success factors are important for creating optimal conditions for OER and
increasing students' willingness to use them.

Research Process
Thema der Praesentation | Autor
(2) Theory and hypothesis formation
(3) Conceptualization
(Operationalization, construction of survey instrument, research
design, sample, pretest)
(4) Data collection and data preparation
(5) Data analysis and interpretation
(1) Research objective
(problem formulation and research question)

Formation of Hypotheses
A Maturity Model for Open Educational Resources in Higher Education Institutions| Reinken et al.
• Literature review shows most important factors that seem to have an influence on OER
• Consensus that influencing factors can be of political, technical, legal, economic, social or didactic natur
• Predictors were identified to formulate relevant hypotheses related to the individual factors

H1: Extensive awareness about OER correlates positively with the
degree of inclination towards OER use.
H2: The factor of availability of OER has an impact on the degree of
inclination towards the use of OER.
H3: Open access to cross-university teaching resources correlates
positively with the degree of inclination towards the use of OER.
H4: An awareness of open licenses correlates positively with the
degree of inclination towards the use of OER.
H5: Costs are related to the degree of inclination towards the use of
OER.
H6: The willingness to cooperate is related to the degree of
inclination towards the use of OER.
H7: The more positive the perceived quality of OER is, the higher
the degree of inclination towards the use of OER.
H8: The higher the perceived effectivity in learning by using OER,
the more likely the degree of inclination towards the use of OER.
H9: A positive perception about the future stock of OER and their
sustainability, increases the degree of inclination towards the use of
OER.

Online-Survey
Online questionnaire
Mixed-method approach (open and closed questions)
Focus on quantitative analysis
Survey-Tool: LimeSurvey
Different task types:
open question: short-answer tasks, without predefined answer alternatives
closed questions: predefined statements, evaluated by a 5-point Likert scale
131 students participated in the survey

Results – Open Question

8. 8
Results – Closed Questions
Almost all hypotheses can be accepted
Exceptions are: Hypothesis 4,7 and 9
#4: no significance within statistical tests
#7: open survey shows a considerable relevance, while statistical
methods do not prove this qualitative factor cannot be clearly verified
#9: no meaningful category is selected by means of the factor and
reliability analysis
