Deserts
 All of us know that the driest places on the Earth are Deserts.
Deserts
 Deserts are the driest place on the Earth.
 It often go for months, or even years without rainfall.
 Desert animals cannot live in blazing hot sun without
water, so they need to find alternative ways to cope
with harsh conditions.
 Not all deserts are endless seas of rolling sand dunes.
 Some of them are rocky or pebbly and scattered with
small trees, while others are sprinkled with beautiful
flowers in the spring.
Some unique creatures coping harsh
conditions
 There are many creatures who have adapted living in hot desert
regions. Some of them are :-
1. Gerbils
2. Darkling beetles
3. Snakes
4. Rattle Snakes
5. Mongooses
6. Camels
So let us know some facts about each in further slides.
Gerbils
 Gerbils are small rodents who can be found most of the times in
desert as desert is its natural habitat.
 It spend hottest part of the day in cool underground burrows.
 Gerbils were originally known as desert rats.
 Its size is 15-30 cm including tail.
Darkling beetles
 Darkling beetles are expert at catching drops of moisture on the
legs.
 Then they lift the drops into the air until the drops trickle down
in their mouths.
Snakes
 There are more than 2300 different kinds of snakes around
the world, ranging from just fifteen centimeters long to more
than eleven meters.
 Most snakes lay eggs, but there are many which give birth to
their young ones.
 In dry, rocky deserts of America lives evil-looking snake with
very bad reputation.
 Its frightening rattle can be heard as far as 30 meters away,
and it can strike with lightening speed .
 There are few snakes which are poisonous and can kill
anyone in just one bite.
Rattle Snakes
 Rattle snake is also called rattler.
 They are found living right across the American continent from
Canada to Argentina.
 It holds its tail upright and rattles the end whenever it is disturbed.
 They feed on a variety of prey, including mice, voles(plant eating
rodents), rats, chipmunks(type of squirrels) and many other small
animals.
 Rattlesnakes kill their prey with the help of venom and then
swallow them whole.
 Some snakes cannot live without the food more than week whereas
some snakes like big python can survive for a year or more without
eating.
Mongooses
Camels
 Camels were first domesticated by people many thousand years ago.
 In the wild, camels usually live in the small groups up to 30 animals.
 A thirsty camel can drink 30 galloons of water in just 10 minutes.
 It can survive up to 10 months without drinking water at all.
 There are 2 different types of camels:-
1. Dromedary camel having only 1 humps.
2. Bactrian camel having 2 humps.
 The humps don’t store water. Instead they are full of fat. This humps
help to survive in hot deserts.
 Do you know why it helps to survive? It is because the hump is full of
fat which helps to nourish the camel when food is scarce.
