All of us know that the driest places on the Earth are Deserts.
2. Deserts
Deserts are the driest place on the Earth.
It often go for months, or even years without rainfall.
Desert animals cannot live in blazing hot sun without
water, so they need to find alternative ways to cope
with harsh conditions.
Not all deserts are endless seas of rolling sand dunes.
Some of them are rocky or pebbly and scattered with
small trees, while others are sprinkled with beautiful
flowers in the spring.
3. Some unique creatures coping harsh
conditions
There are many creatures who have adapted living in hot desert
regions. Some of them are :-
1. Gerbils
2. Darkling beetles
3. Snakes
4. Rattle Snakes
5. Mongooses
6. Camels

4. Gerbils
Gerbils are small rodents who can be found most of the times in
desert as desert is its natural habitat.
It spend hottest part of the day in cool underground burrows.
Gerbils were originally known as desert rats.
Its size is 15-30 cm including tail.
5. Darkling beetles
Darkling beetles are expert at catching drops of moisture on the
legs.
Then they lift the drops into the air until the drops trickle down
in their mouths.
6. Snakes
There are more than 2300 different kinds of snakes around
the world, ranging from just fifteen centimeters long to more
than eleven meters.
Most snakes lay eggs, but there are many which give birth to
their young ones.
In dry, rocky deserts of America lives evil-looking snake with
very bad reputation.
Its frightening rattle can be heard as far as 30 meters away,
and it can strike with lightening speed .
There are few snakes which are poisonous and can kill
anyone in just one bite.
7. Rattle Snakes
Rattle snake is also called rattler.
They are found living right across the American continent from
Canada to Argentina.
It holds its tail upright and rattles the end whenever it is disturbed.
They feed on a variety of prey, including mice, voles(plant eating
rodents), rats, chipmunks(type of squirrels) and many other small
animals.
Rattlesnakes kill their prey with the help of venom and then
swallow them whole.
Some snakes cannot live without the food more than week whereas
some snakes like big python can survive for a year or more without
eating.
9. Camels
Camels were first domesticated by people many thousand years ago.
In the wild, camels usually live in the small groups up to 30 animals.
A thirsty camel can drink 30 galloons of water in just 10 minutes.
It can survive up to 10 months without drinking water at all.
There are 2 different types of camels:-
1. Dromedary camel having only 1 humps.
2. Bactrian camel having 2 humps.
The humps don’t store water. Instead they are full of fat. This humps
help to survive in hot deserts.
Do you know why it helps to survive? It is because the hump is full of
fat which helps to nourish the camel when food is scarce.
