water jet’s impact force of
both IPx5 (0.3bar nozzle
pressure) and IPx6 (1bar
nozzle pressure) is greater
than the maximum absolute
pressure under IPx7
conditions (0.1bar at 1m
depth).

b) The IPx7-8 immersion results in force vectors
that are perpendicular to every surface
segment while the above mentioned dynamic
nature of an IPx5-6 water surge causes a
predominant direction of the water particle’s
force vectors. So the impact of a water jet may
pull a cover open (e.g. a connector cap) that
would otherwise stay in place during
submersion.

conditions will cause a vacuum in
the housing that can draw air and
water through the gaskets. This
way, a specimen that does pass
IPx5-IPx6 may actually fail the
“lower” drip and spray tests.
