This document provides guidelines for using calipers to measure different types of objects. It explains that calipers can be used to measure the height and thickness of parts by using the step measuring face. For slender parts, the diameter or thickness should be measured with the part tilted to average out irregularities. Hole depth can be measured with a depth probe by finding the edge between the cylindrical and cone-shaped sections. Soft, elastic parts should be firmly held and the jaws gradually opened to find the dimension at which the part begins to drop.
