2. Lessons from the Rich Young Ruler
Luke 18:18-23: We like to play armchair
quarterback, but how would you handle the
situation if you were in the man’s shoes?
V. 21: “All these things I have kept…”
The ruler was certain of his own ability to live
righteously, much like the Pharisee (v. 11-12).
Are we certain of our own ability to live
righteously?
What kind of disciple are you?
3. Lessons from the Rich Young Ruler
Do you think of Jesus as “good”?
Luke 18:18: Ruler calls Jesus, “Good Teacher.”
But Jesus wants him to know he is speaking to The
Good Teacher, not just the average religious leader.
To the young man, Jesus’ words were not
commands, but rather suggestions.
Our view of Jesus: Demonstrated by what we do,
not what we say.
We are guilty of hypocrisy if we call Him Lord, but
ignore His teaching.
4. Lessons from the Rich Young Ruler
Who or what is my god?
Matt. 19:20: “What do I still lack?”
God alone should be worshiped, obeyed, adored.
Young ruler: Trying to serve God and mammon
at the same time (Matt. 6:24).
Is there a part of your life that you are unwilling
to surrender to Jesus Christ?
Do not let anything get in the way of your service
to God.
5. Lessons from the Rich Young Ruler
What do you value, and how do you show it?
Luke 18:22-23: Ruler valued his possessions
more than he did eternal life.
Jesus was determining whether his treasure lay
with God or money (Matt. 6:19-21; Luke 16:13).
Do you value eternal life above everything else?
Is there something we would refuse to give up,
even if Jesus asked us to?
If you want to find out what you truly value, think
about how you spend your time.
