1) Biblical "good works" encompass every aspect of a believer's thinking and conduct before God, not just good deeds. They result from having faith in Christ.
2) Good works are a Christian's love offering to God and witness to unsaved people. They glorify God and can lead others to faith in Christ.
3) Good works were prepared by God beforehand and are part of his eternal plan. They should be done to please Christ, not oneself, and to be a blessing and example to other believers.

November 2016
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have
been called according to his purpose”( Romans 8:28).
Firstwe will understandastowhat constitutes"GoodWorks.Aswe lookat Scripture we findthatthe
wordthat is translated"good" meansthatwhichispleasingtoGod,that whichisuprightand honorable
inHis sight. Sopracticallyspeaking, howdowe know whatconstitutes"goodworks? The bible tellsus
that we can com3e to knowthisby understandingGod'swill.Andthatknowledge comesbyincreasing
our knowledgeof God,byreadingandstudyingHisWord. Therefore whenwe readHisword,we geta
deepunderstand astowhat isGood and pleasingto Godas againstwhat is Bad whichis unpleasingto
Him. Good worksare resultingfromthe fruitof the spiritaswe can learnfrom Galatians5:22-23, “But
the fruit the Holy Spiritproduces is love, joy andpeace. It is beingpatient, kind andgood. It isbeing
faithful 23
andgentleand havingcontrol of oneself. There isno law againstthingsofthat kind.
The Biblical definitionof "goodworks"isnotmerely"gooddeeds"orgoodactionsthat one maydo.
Biblical "goodworks"encompasseveryaspectof ourthinkingandconductbefore God.The Christian's
goodworksare rootedinChrist, and have cosmicpurposesthatGod ordainedbefore the worldbegan.
We can learnthisfrom John 17:5, “Sonow, Father, giveglory to me in heaven where your throne is.
Giveme the glory I hadwith you before the world began”.
As Christianswe needtoknowthat Christisthe Root and that GoodWorks are the Fruit. It isour faithin
Christthat drivesusto repentforour sins andseeksalvationandGoodworksas the resultof thisaction.
That is the properorder. We needto clearlyunderstandthat Christiansaren'tChristiansbecause of their
goodworks.Christiansare Christiansbecause theybelieve onthe LordJesusChrist. That'sthe order
Christcomesfirst-- the preeminentChrist. He takesupresidence inthe heartof the believer, andgood
worksresult. We readof thisin Ephesians 2:8-10, “God’sgrace hassaved you becauseof your faithin
Christ.Your salvationdoesn’tcome fromanythingyou do.It isGod’sgift. 9
It is not based onanything
you have done.No one can brag aboutearningit. 10
Weare God’screation. He created us to belong to
ChristJesus. Now we can do goodworks. Long agoGodprepared these works forus to do”.
Christiansare able tobe fruitful ingoodworks, bringingforthfruitthatispleasingtoGod,because of
whowe are in Christ. That's whatPaul tellsthe Colossianbelievers whenhe isreferringtotheirgood
worksthroughfaithinChrist: “
Wethank himbecause we have heard aboutyour faithin ChristJesus.
We have alsoheard that you loveall God’speople” (Colossian1:4).He isstatinghere that itis because
of "yourfaithinChristJesus”and your[resulting] love for others.We change tobecominga“new entity
inChrist” through the hope whichislaidupfor us inheaven aswe learnthisthrough the wordof the
truth of the gospel.
We learntthatChristis the root and thatgood worksare the fruit. Thenone may questionastowhat
then, isthe purpose of good works? Good worksarebelievers' love-offeringsto God. Ephesians 5:tells
us that our walkinChrist, ourgood worksinChrist,is the sweet-smellingaromaof a sacrificial love-
offeringtoGod. “
Leada life oflove, just asChrist did.He lovedus. He gave himselfupfor us. He was a
sweet-smellingofferingandsacrificeto God”(Ephesians5:2).
Whenhe or she produces Good works, they becomeChrist’s witnessto the multitudeof unsaved people
on earth. The fruitof whichPaul speaksinColossians 1is notthe savingof soulsassuch, butrather it is
2. our witnesstounsavedsouls, whichthe HolySpiritusesasone of the meansby whichHe bringslost
soulsto faithinChrist. We can also learnwhere the apostle Matthew says: "Letyour lightso shine
before men, that they may see your good works, and glorifyyourFather which isin heaven" (Matthew
5:16). We can alsolearnagainfrom Titus 2:7, “ Dowhat is good.Set anexample for them in
everything. Whenyou teach,be honestand serious”. Good worksareour edifying exampleto our
fellow believers so thatin all thingsshowingyourself tobe a patternof goodworks;in doctrine showing
integrity, reverence, incorruptibility. We canlearnfrom Titus3 that Good worksarethe meansby which
we minister to the needsof ourfellow believers. " Our people mustlearn to commit themselvesto doing
what is good. Then they can providefor people when they are ingreat need. Ifthey do that, their lives
won’t turn out to be useless"(Titus3:14).
TheBiblical definitionof goodworksisnot merely"gooddeeds." TheBiblicaldefinition of "good
works"encompasses far more. Biblical "good works"encompass every aspect of our thinking and
conductbefore God. "Good works"encompass not only caring for the poor, but behaving in a godly
way toward even your employer. "Goodworks" encompass not only giving to the workand
ministry of the church, but also truly lovingthose within it. "Good works"encompass not only
distributing Bibles to those whohave none, but seeking to understand, believe, live and share in
Goodness. There is a "signature conduct"that the worldshould see in every true Christian. The
world that seeks to criticizeChristians should have its mouth stopped because they will sees this
kind of new life in us.
Good worksare an integral partof God'seternal plan, and thereforethey are ourhighestresponsibility.
We are God’s creationas we can learnfrom Ephesians2:10, “Weare God’screation. He created us to
belongto Christ Jesus. Now we can do goodworks. Long agoGodprepared these works for us to do”.
We can alsolearnthat Jesusgave himself toussothat we learnfromHis teachingsandchange as we
read fromTitus 2:14, “He gave himselfforus. By doingthat, he set us free from all evil. He wanted to
make us pure. He wanted usto be hisvery ownpeople. He wanted usto desire to dowhat is good”.
Thisis the propernature of goodworks -- not to please ourselves, buttoplease Christ.Salvationin
Christisthe root, good worksare the fruit, andour goodworksare part of God's planforChristiansto
bearwitnesstothe lostworld, and tobe an example andblessingtoothers, especiallyforthe edification
of ourfellowbelievers.
It isno exaggerationtosaythat believers'goodworkshave cosmicpurposes.Theyare anintegral partof
God's eternal planto bringmany sonsto glory.“Andwe know that in all thingsGodworks for the good
of those wholove him,who have been calledaccordingto his purpose”( Romans8:28).
