To find vital information about my target market
I had to do a survey, so I made one and posted it
up on ‘questionpro.com’. Then I asked people of
my target market to share and answer it. This
helped me get vital quantitative knowledge on
what my target audience is like.
3. Target Market
My target market is 16 – 24 people who like
indie/rock/pop/punk-rock music. This is difficult
as there is quite a broad spectrum of age, I have
to make my magazine appealing for 16 year
olds, who are just boys, and 24 year olds, who
are men.
4. Survey Results
The first question I conjured up was a question of age, I asked 40 people their age, I gave the options
of
• 12 or younger
• 13 – 15
• 16 – 24
• 25 – 30
• 30 or older
0% were 12 or younger
25% were 13 – 15
50% were 16 – 24
20% were 25 – 30
5% were 30 or older
I asked this question to make sure of my demographic. I was expecting it to be mainly 16 – 24 and I
was mainly right, although I was surprised by the amount of 25 – 30 year olds who took part of my
essay. I found this helpful because it has given me more understanding of which age groups like, and
giving me a 20 people sample of 16-24 year olds, who are my target market.
AGE OF PARTICIPANTS
5. The second question I asked was to do with gender, simply I asked, are you male or female, it turns out that 75% of the
participants were male, and 25% were female. This data is useful as it gives me a large 30 people sample of my target market,
males. This way I can form my magazine quite reliably around my research, finding out about what they liked in a magazine and
applying it to mine accordingly.

6. The next question I used was more about aspirations and dreams. I asked ‘If you could be anything in the world, what would it
be?’ 50% of the men said a footballer, 25% of the men said they would want to go into medicine, and another 25% said they
would like to do something with music. This information is important to have as I can see their personal dreams and incorporate it
into my magazine. For example, I can talk about how the musicians are living the dream, this will connect with my audience in
deeper way, as they will understand and respect the artist, and therefore the magazine.

ASPIRATIONS
7. I then proceeded to ask, ‘what are your 3 favourite bands/artists?’ 60% of the male demographic chose a band that is considered
Rock and Roll or Indie. 20% said a Rapper, and the remaining 20% chose a band/artist of the genre Pop. This is useful to me as it
shows that Indie, which is the genre I chose to do my magazine on is popular amongst my target audience of males. This shows
that I was correct in choosing an Indie music magazine as it will have a large % of interest from males.

FAVOURITE GENRES OF MUSIC
8. The next question was to see how they see themselves really. I asked ‘what is your favourite animal?’. If they chose a alpha male
or predator kind of animal then they see them selves as an alpha male. An astonishing 95% of males chose a predator or an alpha
male of some sort. Showing that the vast majority of males see themselves as dominant. I can use this in my magazine as I can
use bold, aggressive fonts and present my artists or bands in a domineering manner, so that my demographic connect with them.

9. Next I asked how they consumed their music. The three options were
• Download illegally
• Download legally
• Buy CD’s
This was to see their passion for the music industry. If they bought CD’s I would consider them quite hardcore fans and had some
money in pocket, and if they downloaded legally then they had enough money and enough respect for the band/artist to
purchase. However, if they downloaded illegally I assumed that they weren't the wealthiest, and/or they didn’t respect the
artist/band. 60% said that they bought CD’s. 30% said they downloaded legally. An only 10% said they downloaded illegally. This is
positive data for me as it shows that the vast majority of my target market have got enough passion and money to subscribe to
my magazine.

HOW THEY BUY THEIR MUSIC
10. Survey Results
The final question was how often the go to gigs, this was to see whether they would like to hear about new up and coming
tours/concerts and how interested they were in seeing bands live, so I can add maybe a section about stories about gigs into my
magazine. The options were
• Never
• Almost never
• Once every few years
• Once a year
• A few times a year
• Once a month
• Twice a month
• More
I was amazed by the results. None said Never, almost never, or once every few years. 20% said once a year. 40% said a few times a
year. 20% said once a month. 15% said twice a month. 5% said more. This is great news for me, as it shows that my demographic
are extremely passionate about music and that means they would probably invest in buying a magazine about it.
