Editor's Notes
Introduction/elevator speech “Hello, my name is Haley Birkhead. I am a third year student at the University of Cincinnati majoring in communication and public relations major with a minor in marketing and a focus in professional sales. This presentation overviews my work experience as a collegiate student. This presentation will outline my internship at Victoria’s Secret PINK as a Campus Representative.
I have chosen these specific majors and minors because I have a strong passion to learn in each of these areas. As well, it will make me marketable to many companies down the road. If there is an opening in the internal/external communications department I will be certified to do that, or if there is an opportunity in professional sales I am able to do that as well. These courses will give me a strong background and an enhanced skill set that will set me a part from other candidates now and in the future.
In January 2014, I was interviewed and offered the position to be one of two PINK Campus Representative for the University of Cincinnati. At the time I was added to the UC PINK Street Team, a volunteer group that helps the reps host events on and off campus. I then began my internship in August 2014 in Columbus, OH at an intense three day brand training.
At my VS PINK internship I worked 10+ hours a week. Some weeks I worked more due to events or traveling. I worked on many projects from December 2014-May 2015. I hosted 7 on and off campus events hosting over 100 people per an event, partnered with student organizations, booked several music djs, and reserved venues for the events. I communicated with home office daily through blogs, focus groups, conference calls, and surveys.
One of the most rewarding opportunities I was able to take part in was the 2014 VS PINK Brand Training. This was a 3 day long event in Columbus, OH. The PINK rep program has 98 schools with 200 reps., the company flew out every rep from around the United States, we stayed at the Hilton Hotel at Easton Towne Centre. My days were filled with branding work shops to learn about the brand, meeting with merchants, designers, and marketing teams, listening to speaker such as CEO Denise Landman.
UC Welcome Week is one of the most exciting weeks of Fall semester. Students gather on Main St and McMicken Commons. PINK’s corporate office rented us a spot at this event. We had our own promotion table and a DJ. We held social media contests generating 200+ new followers on our social media accounts and gave out hundreds of PINK freebies. This event gave me the opportunity to network with other student organizations, tell new and past students about UC PINK, and promote the all new Collegiate Collection at PINK.
The Spring Break Prep party was themed for preparing for spring break. This party promoted the new PINK spring break line. We paired up with Her Campus for this event. We contacted local nail techs and hair stylists to give complimentary mini services to girls and to show them what’s hot for spring break 2015. I reached out to Red Bull Rep, they came with free drinks and promoted UC PINK. I also reached out to BearCast which is a student run DJ group, they came out and played music during the event. I created a photo booth with various PINK props and served snack and mocktails for all who attended.
We stuck to promoting the event using word of mouth from Her Campus and our UC PINK team as well as heavy marketing over social media. We created an event page over facebook inviting 800 girls and talked about it over instagram and twitter.
Number of event attendees: about 70 girls; we made the party more of an open house type of event.
We did a raffle every 15 minutes. We gave girls certain number of tickets based on their involvement to UC PINK. If they completed certain things before or during the party they were eligible for raffle more tickets. We gave out one gift card at the beginning at each raffle and then followed by raffling off a beach towel and some of our smaller freebie bags including makeup bags, water bottles, lip balms, highlighters, ect.
Having the opportunity to be a VS PINK intern was such a life changing and rewarding experience. Being from Columbus, I knew I always wanted to work for L Brands. I am the type of person who sets goal for themselves and works extremely hard to achieve those goals. I have learned so much from VS PINK, working for a multi-million dollar world-renowned brand has taught me how the fashion and retail industry works, how to successfully reach your audience through social media, and how to be number one at everything they do. All of these skills have been learned and strengthened due to my internship. I will continue to use these skills in my courses at UC and throughout my entire life.
