Sequence: Hannibal TV Series Title Sequence
Type of motion graphic and purpose:
What is its purpose and specific subject?
This is the opening title sequence for the TV show ‘Hannibal’ this is used at the beginning of every show used to
intrigue the viewer into watching and give clues at what the show is about.
Description:
What do you see and what do you read
from this? What symbolism is there?
How suitable is the sequence for its
purpose?
In this title sequence we see names of the people who created/help make the series along with a splash of red
liquid, presumably hinting to be blood. The names showed changes with each time the splash of liquid changes.
Then he liquid starts to form into different body parts, for example at 00:05 the liquid forms a kind of, rib cage
shape. Then the liquid keeps changing shapes, at 00:11 the liquid is clearly forming the shape of a head. Then we
see the liquid forming into the head shape from different angles, then finally shown from the front of the head.
Then the word ‘Hannibal’ fades into the middle of the screen in red against the clear white background.
I think there is quite a bit of symbolism used within this title sequence, and I think it definitely fits perfectly with
what the show is about. For example, the red liquid is clearly meant to represent blood, and the way the blood
forms different body parts of a human shows this show will somehow be related to human bodies, which it is.
Also, blood is a commonly related to pain and hurt, which is what happens in this show as the people are
violently murdered, so the blood could be a reference to the pain of the victims in the show. Also, the fact that
the blood transforms into body shapes hints to the fact the show is about cannibalism, as they eat human flesh,
which definitely relates to body parts. Overall, I think this title sequence fits its purpose completely as it shows
us what the show will be surrounding without giving away too much information, and definitely keeps the
viewer intrigued.
Techniques used:
Animation, visual effects, colour, audio,
graphics, movement.
Blur, sharpen, distortion, rotation, opacity.
Animation, colour, audio and blur are used within this title sequence. For example, they have used animation to
create the blood and the movement of the blood into different body shapes. Colour is used to show clearly that
the liquid is blood by being red against a white background. Then, audio is used because it starts the second the
sequence begins and they have used quite eerie creepy music to go along with the theme of the show. Also blur
2. is used when the first names come into shot, and when the blood comes into shot, it slowly fades into focus, as
well as the word ‘Hannibal’ at the end.
