2. Trailer 1 – Kat and alfie trailer- eastenders – bbc one
Verbal Codes – From the start there is non-diegetic sound which changes from quite night like tune
to a western soundtrack when Kat’s face comes in shot which is used to match the main theme of the
trailer. Then there is diegetic dialogue from a women who is laughing with her friend but she quickly
stops this is to show how unaware she is. Soundfx are used to show that her pocket mirror is her
weapon with a pulling out of a gun sound. There continues to be diegetic and non diegetic sound till a
voice over tells the viewers that “ it all going down in the square” which leads to the start of the theme
song for eastenders. Lastly the voice over says “eastenders all week on bbc one” which is used to
inform the viewer when it is showing and where it is showed.
Non-Verbal Codes – Throughout the ad there is a western theme which links to the fact that there I
something about to go down which a common convention in western films. To match the theme they
used a pocket mirror as the typical weapon in a western film. Kats is seen as the main character which
links to rebecca feasey’s convention which is of a strong women. The trailer is set in the common
location in the soap which is “the square” This is so that the ad is easily identifiable as a eastenders ad.
To also be easily identifiable they used well known characters of the soap which allows people that
originally watch the soap know whether
Technical Codes – Within the trailer they have many different camera shot, firstly there is a upward
establishing shot of the bar, this is to show that it is a big part of the trailer. Secondly there is a tracking
shot of Kat walking (at this point you don’t know it is her), this is used to engage the viewer and making
them wonder who it is and also this is a common convention of a western film. Thirdly there is a
upward pan when she stops walking to reveal its Kat, this is used to relieve the viewer of guessing who
the person is. Fourthly there are many close up of both Kat’s and Alfie’s eyes which shows there
emotions and the way they are looking at each other. Lastly there is a aerial/establishing shot of both
Kat and alfie which is used to show the distance between them two and their relationship.
3. Trailer 2 – Official Hollyoaks Trailer: New Year 2015
Verbal Codes – Firstly there is Non-diegetic sound a intense soundtrack which is played though out
the trailer, this is to create a intense viewing experience and engage the viewer in what is going to
come up next, it stops for a brief moment The diegetic sound/volume goes up when the glass breaks,
they have done this to emphasize the fight the two are having. Again there is Non diegetic sound
when the hospital scene occurs there is an ambulances sirens playing in the background.
Non-Verbal Codes – through out the trailer most of the characters are wearing casual
clothing until they are pictured in their work place for example a office and a hospital were
a few of them this is used to have a personal relationship with the viewers. The clothing
mostly reflects the people for example the woman wearing orange prison clothing is a
prisoner. The hospital scenes show hospital equipment close up this is to show that it is
indeed a hospital scene and that there is something important going on there.
Technical Codes – Firstly there is a shot of a woman in the back of a car and the shot
change to a high angle shot on two men, this is done to show that they are in more power.
Secondly there is a scene where a woman on a hospital bed and a man are kissing and
there is a low angle establishing shot used to show the surrounding and them, and also
that they are alone together. Lastly there is another scene where a woman walks into a
house and there is a low angle tracking shot to show the perspective of the children.
4. Trailer 3 – Skins – Season 5 trailer
Verbal Codes – Firstly there is a soundtrack played through out the trailer which is
“Arcade fire’s ready to start” which connotes to the fact that they are suddenly starting to
fall faster. Secondly there is a voice over which says “Skins, a brand new series, coming
soon on e4” is a deep voice which is used to give dramatic effect and create a serious vibe
for the viewers. Lastly The fade effect used at the start into the soundtrack links to the fact
that it it is suddenly occurring.
Non-Verbal Codes – Firstly The use of the effect of clothes being put on the characters it
connotes to the fact that they are covering up something secret, this is used to link to the
multi stranded narratives from past seasons and therefore show that it continues in the
new season. Secondly the facial expressions show that some are not as surprised as the
other characters therefore connoting to the fact they possibly expected this to happen and
other worried what is going on.
Technical Codes – Firstly, there are close ups used to show the characters face so we can
establish who is who, this is used to give more insight to who is being effected. Secondly
there is a wide shot which is used to show the surroundings and also the journey that the
character are going through. Thirdly there is a Extreme close up used to denote characters
emotions and through their facial expressions, connotes whether they are happy or sad.
And lastly they a low angle shot to show the doll break on impact when hitting the floor,
this is done to get the viewer more emerged.
5. Evaluation of Textual Analysis –
Compare and Contrast
Trailer 1) – The areas of strength of the eastenders trailer where the use of sound effects are
used to make a item seem like something else, used for example with the pocket mirror
where it sounds like a weapon when she pulls it out. I would ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale’s
Repetition) the use of a voice over as it creates a sense that it is serious towards the ending
therefore making the viewer feel more emerged, this code is commonly used towards the
end also to inform the viewer where and when it will be shown.
Trailer 2) – The Areas of Strength within the Hollyoaks trailer where the use of personal
relationship when they show work places and hospitals which relates to the viewer and
gives them a more deeper connection with the soap. I would ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale’s
Repetition) this code as it will really appeal to our target audience because our soap opera
trailer will relate to their social life.
Trailer 3) – The Areas of Strength during the Skins Season 5 trailer are the subtle hidden
meanings behind some codes, for example the clothing of the characters as they fall means
that they are hiding something sacred/secret. This is used make the viewer think a little
deeper as this gives subtle to the story of the series so far. I Would ‘repeat’ (Steve Neale’s
Repetition) this code in my soap opera to show how the protagonist is insane and is a threat.
