The curved Olive Tip SC Cannula (El Rayes) is designed for injection of fluids, primarily in the anterior suprachoroidal space. This is especially useful for injecting a filler material, such as viscoelastic, to create a buckle effect in the treatment of peripheral retinal detachments.

Suprachoroidal Buckle Technique
The 3311 includes the Olive Tip Cannula and a High-Pressure Extension Tube. The cannula is attached to the
extension tube via the male luer connector. The opposite end of the extension tube is connected to the desired
viscoelastic material, such as Healon 5®
. The infusion line and cannula should be primed with the fluid prior to
surgery, preferably by the individual who will manipulate the syringe during the surgery.
The cannula is designed for procedures anterior to the vortex veins (anterior to the equator). An incision site is
selected based on the treatment target location.Afull-thickness lamellar incision is made in the sclera approximately
3mm posterior and parallel to the limbus to access the suprachoroidal space. The incision can be created with a
15° knife to expose the choroid. If desired, the last lamella can be dissected using diathermy for increased safety.
The incision site should be as near as possible to the intended treatment location. An incision length of 2.5-3mm is
required for insertion of the cannula.
After the incision is made, an initial pathway is opened by carefully injecting a small amount of viscoelastic material
just inside the incision at the lower scleral lip to separate the choroid and sclera at the incision site. The cannula is
then introduced and gradually advanced through the incision toward the treatment area under direct visualization
through the surgical microscope or indirect ophthalmoscope, gently guiding it into the suprachoroidal space. The
blunt tip can be used to carefully indent or depress the choroid to locate the treatment target. When the target area
is reached, the viscoelastic material can be injected gradually as desired by the surgeon or an assistant via the
high-pressure extension line. The viscoelastic material is injected until sufficient volume (area & height) is reached
to bring the choroid into contact with the retina to support the area of detachment (usually 0.2-0.3ml, depending
on tear size). The intraocular pressure should be monitored during and after injection. An anterior chamber tap or
subretinal fluid drainage (separate sclerotomy) can be used to lower the intraocular pressure if necessary.
After delivery of the viscoelastic material, the cannula is carefully withdrawn and the incision site is closed using
standard technique. The buckle effect will remain in place for approximately 2-3 weeks, depending on the type and
amount of viscoelastic material used. This is enough time for choroiretinal adhesion after treating the tear by laser
(post-injection) or cryopexy (pre-injection).
The 3311 Olive Tip SC Cannula (El Rayes) is designed for the injection of fluids, including viscoelastics, in
ophthalmic surgery. The product has a specially-designed olive tip, allowing use in the suprachoroidal space. The
3311 can be used to create a suprachoroidal indentation or buckle effect in the treatment of retinal detachments.
It can also be used to deliver medications or other therapeutic agents into the suprachoroidal space, as well as for
aspiration of fluids in cases of suprachoroidal hemorrhage, removal of silicone oil, or similar cases.
