2. Step 1: Pick a topic.
Sample Topic: Is the time right for the rise of third party political
candidates in New York State?
Step 2: Start researching that topic but as you learn more and uncover
resources, be ready to revise your topic as your research unfolds. You are
to write a paper of at least five (5) full pages according to Professor
Whitaker’s requirements.

WHERE TO BEGIN?
3. YOUR PAPER SHOULD INCLUDE:
Research of original data/statistics utilizing either/or the New York State
Statistical Yearbook http://rockinst.org/nys_statistics/ or the NYS Data
Portal https://data.ny.gov/
Use of at least three books as sources. One of these three is the class
textbook. Find at least two books *or* one book and one academic journal
to complement the textbook that pertain to your specific topic (check
indexes for references in books to your topic)
These are minimal requirements; you may find it helpful to use online
newspaper databases, such as those available through HVCC library website
and timesunion.com archive.
7. ACADEMIC JOURNALS
Start with One Search. Check Full Text and Peer Reviewed* which will require your articles to be full text and
scholarly (peer-reviewed). Let’s use the same search terms we used for our book search:
New York political parties
8. WHAT HAPPENED? CAN YOU SEE WHY THE HVCC
ONESEARCH ADVANCED SEARCH IS SO VALUABLE?
*If you check Full Text, you may miss some articles that we can get for you through Interlibrary Loan. If you have more
than enough articles, Full Text is probably ok.
You can also choose the Find Articles tab (see prior screen) and search individual databases. There are many ways to find
scholarly articles using the Dwight Marvin Library!
9. Statistics using either New York State Statistical Yearbook or NYS Data
Portal
http://rockinst.org/nys_statistics: 2014 New York State Statistical
Yearbook, 38th Edition
