3. MAIN PARTS:-
A heat engine has the following three main parts:
i) Source of heat
ii) Sink of heat
iii) Working substance
4. SOURCE OF HEAT
It is kept at a constant high temperature T1 so
that heat can be extracted from it, without the
change in its temperature.
5. SINK OF HEAT
It is kept at a constant low temperature T2 so that
heat can be supplied to it without the change in its
temperature. The atmosphere acts as a proper sink
in practice because it has an infinite capacity to
absorb heat without change in its temperature.
6. WORKING SUBSTANCE
It absorbs heat from the source, convert a part of
it into mechanical work and rejects the remaining
heat at the sink. This is called a cycle. Since the
working substance returns back to its initial state
after a complete cycle, its internal energy remains
unchanged. Thus work is obtained continuously
due to repetition of the cycle.
