3. INTRODUCTION OF NMDC KIRANDUL
COMPLEX
NMDC BIOM is the one of most metal producing mines in India.it is an iron ore
mines which situated in South Bastar Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh.
BIOM NMDC mines was started in 1958.
First production of iron ore was given in 1968.
BIOM is a fully mechanised opencast mine by using shovel dumper combination
method.
Ore being processed by drilling, blasting, excavation quality control, crushing,
screening, loading of finished product lumps, CLO and fines.
Mineral deposit is a metasedimentary stratiform deposit since ore body is located at
top of the hill, excavation shall be continued to be done by opencast mining method.

6. GEOLOGY OF BIOM
the iron oreof bailadila range belong to the Bailadila series, which are associated with
slightly metamorphosed iron ore bearing sedimentary rocks of precambrian age. iron
ore occurs as separate ore bodies on the crest of the two sub parallel hills running N-
S. The iron ore is formed due to the enrichment of iron by leaching silica from B.H.Q.
formation. The hill bearing iron ore is almost 700 kilometre long maximum width
650m.

7. RESOURCE ESTIMATION
IBM initial only 1 bore hole was drilled in the year 1963-1964 of 71.8m. NMDC LTD.
Exploration conducted in the period from 1963 to 1964 was drilled 27 boreholes of 1658.3m.
2nd phase where analysed from 2004-2005 and drilled 205.5m. And 41 drill holes samples
collected. 3rd phase from 2010 to 2019 and 48 boreholes was drilled of 4333.5 metres and 2184
drill samples were collected. Drill samples are collected analysed for Fe, AL2O3, SiO2, LOI,
and P.

8. MINING TECHNOLOGY
It is a fully mechanism open cast mine using shovel dumper combination. It is being exploited
as a part of pit 2 of BIOM kirandul complex. Ore is processed (crushed and screened) to get
finished products lumps and fine. all the infrastructure such as crushing plant, screening plant,
loading plant, stores, service centres and West dump have been planned outside the pit limit.
The pit profile for individual blocks have been drawn by demarking bench profiles and cross
sections starting from bottom most bench allowing a minimum ultimate width of 12m so as to
provide overall safe pit slope. The bench height for all the benches has been planned as 12m.
During the operation phase a minimum bench width of 30 is maintained, and excavation is
done upto counter lines. The average pit slope is kept 45 degree. The mine will be worked its
economically feasible depth keeping mineral conservation in view.
12. BENCH PARAMETERS
DEPOSIT 11C
Bench height - 12m.
Bench width - 30m.
Slope angle - 70 degree.
Deposit details -
1. Hematite ore (fe2o3)
2. Country rock- BHQ (banded hematite quartzite)
Cut off grade - 45%
Stripping ratio - 1:0.47
Haul road - not more than 1in 16
Ramp - not more than 1 in 16
13. DRILLING AND BLASTING
DRILLING: the holes are drilled in square, stggered pattern having S*B (spacing×burden)
as given below depending upon the different type of strata encounted for a bench height of
12 m.
ROCK TYPE HOLE DIA. SPACING BURDEN Charge factor
(kg/m^3)
Very hard 250 5.5 5.0 1.0-0.2
Hard 250 6.0 5.5 0.9-1.0
Medium hard 250 6.5 6.0 0.8-0.9
Soft 250 7.0 6.5 0.65-0.8
Hard 150 4.0 3.5 0.9-1.0
Medium hard 150 4.5 4.0 0.8-0.9
Soft 150 5.0 4.5 0.65-0.8
14. Charge per delay:-
The initiation of primary charge is done using advanced technology in nonel system is
under used.Different Intra-hole delay(450m,475m,500m,etc). Charge per delay
(25m,65m,109m etc.) Are introduce whetreby maximum charge per delay is 800 kg
approx. Charge per hole 350 to 400 kg depending upon the strata.
Blasting:-
Process of reducing a solid body such as a rock to fragments by using a explosive
under the influence of gas pressure, the cracks extend and Rock in front of the drill
hole yields and moves forward.
Priming blasting:-
Is conducted using site mixed emulsion explosives (SME) in conjunction with cast
boosters and mostly cartridge explosive 83 mm dia. For secondary blasting blast hole
are drilled in in rectangular pattern for primary drilling. Using site mix explosive in
conjunction with cast boosters. secondary blasting is done to deal with uneven bench
floor, toe, big boulders which are generated after primary blasting, secondary blasting
is also required for drain preparation.
15. SME SUPPLIERS: ORICA, NAVBHARAT, CALTECH, SOLAR.
CARTRIDGE SUPPLIERS: NAVBHARAT.
MANNER AND SEQUENCE OF FIRING: true bottom initiation of blast holes.
Firing sequence depends on geo mining and designed to give optimum
fragmentation.
whole Dia. Should be 15 times to the bench height.
the hole diameter is 250 mm for primary blasting and for secondary blasting the
hole diameter is 150 mm.
16. CRUSHING PLANT
Truck bin/hoper: dumpers unload the material into the truck bin of capacity 500
tones.
Apron feeder: it provides slow and gradual feed to the crusher.
Primary gyratory crusher: here material crushes to 300 mm size, size: 54”×74”,

740, product size: 300mm.
Scraping screen: here is screen is provided to separate large size material more
than 150 mm.
Secondary gyratory crusher: here material is further crushed to a size of less than
150 mm. Size: 24”×60”, product size: 150mm, motor power: 220kw.
17. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
The first preference is safety in the mines that is we saw the logo “SAFETY
FIRST” in the mine.
Always wear shoes and helmet in the mine area.
Always give the preference to heavy vehicles while moving on the road.
