Catherine Hayes was a famous Irish soprano from the Victorian era who was born in 1818 in Limerick, Ireland to poor parents. She grew up in poverty after her father abandoned the family. Hayes became a world famous singer and was considered the "Madonna" of her day, making her the 19th century operatic equivalent of the world's most famous pop star. She overcame her poor background to achieve great success as a singer, performing throughout Europe before dying in London in 1861.
