2. Introduction
■ A real estate management professional with a background in
engineering, Ghusalal Patel has extensive experience with special
construction projects. One element of construction Ghusalal Patel
has worked with is lifting heavy equipment to high-rise buildings.
The most common type of crane used in constructing a high-rise
building is the tower crane. These large machines carry tools and
materials up the side of the building, but constructing them is a
lengthy process. Most cranes require more than 10 semi-trucks to
bring in their components.
The first steps include pouring the concrete pad and assembling
the top portion of the crane. The concrete pad must be created
weeks in advance, and can weigh as much as 400,000 pounds. This
provides enough weight to keep the crane's base stable.
3. Tower Cranes
■ The tall tower portion of the crane is called the mast. Atop the
mast are components such as the jib, slewing unit, machinery
arm, and concrete counterweights, as well as the operator’s
cab, from which a crane professional controls the crane.
The crane must then be adjusted to the appropriate height for
the project. Personnel use a climber, which lifts the topmost
portion slightly, and slide a segment of the crane's mast into
the newly empty space. This process repeats several times until
the mast is tall enough for the project at hand.
