During the High Middle Ages, the tread wheel crane was
reintroduced on a large scale after the technology had fallen into
disuse in western Europe with the demise of the Western Roman
Empire. The earliest reference to a treadwheel (magna rota)
reappears in archival literature in France about
1225,followed by an illuminated depiction in a
manuscript of probably also French origin dating to

This type of crane offers a boom that consists of a
number of tubes fitted one inside of the other. A
hydraulic mechanism extends or retracts the tubes to
increase or decrease the length of the boom.
