2. Goodwin's theory suggests that each music
video includes five key elements in order to
fully convey a songs message to an audience.
Those aspects are:
Thought through beat
Relationship between song and visuals
Narrative and performance of song
Technical aspects
Star image
3. Thought through beat is essentially the
realisation of an artists lyrics come to life
through the music video. The process can
allow an artist to showcase there talent as
well as make there song and lyrics more
influential and personal to people listening.
By doing so, the song connects with more
people and allows the artist to convey the
story they wanted to tell
4. The visuals in a music video can be used in three different
ways.
Illustrate-The song and the video go hand in hand and help
portray the true meaning of the song by matching the lyrics
in some capacity.
Disjuncture-The meaning of the song is totally ignored and
the visuals are seemingly random, allowing audiences to
connect with the song on an individual basis, depending on
how they feel about the video.
Amplify (repeatability)- The main focus of the song is
constantly repeated throughout the video and the message
is conveyed. Camera shots and images are often repeated in
order to properly convey the meaning.
5. Goodwin's theory suggest the music videos should include
the performer of the song to help add some credibility to the
video and also connect audiences with the artists.Te
narrative follows the performer through whatever situation
they may be singing about. An example of thsi would be
“Wrecking Ball” by Miley Cyrus. The song itself features Cyrus
swinging on a wrecking ball, acting out the message of the
song
6. Arguably the most important feature of goodwins theory, “Star Image” is
the idea that having a well known celebrity or the artist themselves will
add more appeal to the video and the song by enticing more people into
buying it.The style of the video will also reflect a performers unique style
or USP in order to portray themselves as something new and refreshing
to audiences. This is done through the use of costume, set, or even dance
choreography.
The inclusion of the artist helps build there own public persona whilst
simultaneously attracting new audiences to there music.
7. Goodwin states that the mise en scene of a music video is
the only real continuity that audiences have as most music
videos cut back and fourth between narrative and hardly
ever fall within a “normal” timeline of events. The lighting,
set design, and consistency of shots all help bring the video
together and adds clarity for the viewer. For instance, the
editing of shots are usually cut to the beat of the song,
allowing the video to flow with the song in a natural
progression. This makes the length of each shot fairly similar,
adding some continuity for audiences watching.
