2. What is Goodwin’s Theory?
Goodwin’s theory states that there are 5 aspects used in music videos.
• Thought beats
• Narrative and performance
• Star imagery
• The relation of visuals to song
• Technical aspects of music videos
3. Thought beats
Thought beats is how the audience sees a
certain music video and what the lyrics mean,
the audience and Goodwin suggest that
people are able to see differences in choruses
and vocal, also how the audience is addressed
which can be shown in a many different ways
through music videos. Music videos now consist
of short stories and keep the audience
interested in the video.
4. Narrative and performance
Goodwin’s theory says that the audience doesn't get the
full narrative of most music videos and that they should
make it so that the audience can understand the narrative
of the music video. By doing this it makes it easier for the
audience to watch the video over and over again as they
have a full narrative.
Having a good performance that the audience will find
interesting will help to keep them watching. The most
important thing to do in perfect music video is to make the
audience believe it’s real and to a professional standered.
5. Star Imagery
Goodwin’s theory says that the audience
need a ‘star’ to look up to in a music video,
weather it be a member of band or group or
someone within the video just someone that
the audience aspire to be like or can relate to
them. This keeps the audience interested.
6. The relation of Visuals TO THE SONG
There are three ways that the video helps to promote a song. One is
through illustrating, this is where lyrics are show in the music video
through images and actions on screen and you get the full
meaning of the song shown on screen. Secondly is to amplify, this is
where the same meanings and effects are manipulated throughout
the video and repeated and thrown into the vision of the audience.
The third ad last is through disjuncture, this is where the lyrics and
meanings of a song is completely ignored, so the music video has
no relevance to the meaning of the song.
7. THECHNICAL ASPECTS OF MUSIC VIDEOS
Technical aspects in music videos is the
use of mise en scene, camera work,
sounds and editing and how it all comes
together to create a mood of the video
and how it is used to attract an
audience.
