Conventions of a music video
1. A typical music video features many characteristics and conventions firstly being the
Camera Shots: Music videos tend to have long shots, close ups and mid shots. This is all to
make the artist the subject matter at to emphasise them the location and emotions.
Also, close ups are used not only to show emotions but to reflect the words of the song
with the movement of the lips of the artist.
Camera Movement: The movement of the camera is used to follow and trace the artist or
band. Camera movements include tilts, pans, tracking and crane shots. Camera shots and
editing an also be used to create a storyline, depending on what your song is all types of
representations can be displayed.
2. Mise en scene is also heavily used when creating a music video as the whole idea is to
represent you, your style and your music, we know this as rap song have a completely
different style to rock. Many mise en scenes used in music videos are very stereotypical for
example gangsters with money and nice cars for rap etc. Music video’s also display what
mood the song is of for example a sad song may be a dark atmosphere and a very calm
video whereas happy would be fast paced and bright.
Music video’s often also represent women in a sexual and enticing manner, this is
purposely to attract viewers and to follow the norm.
Lighting sound and props are also essential when making a music video successful as they
all help improve the final product.
