Music is an integral part of the human experience.
Researchers have pondered the possible therapeutic benefits
for centuries and have concluded music is a valid therapy to
potentially lift depression and anxiety, as well as to improve
mood, self-esteem, and quality of life.
Your child can make a huge difference to their exam
experience if they use music to aid their study. Revision is
not just about study; your son or daughter also needs to plan
in breaks in order to re-energise or relax. Sleep
is also essential – being able to drift off with a calm mind will
improve their ability to function on the day of
the exam.

Concentration
Music has a profound impact on the brain. It can evoke
emotion, help regain memories,
stimulate new neural connections and activate attention.
Barry Goldstein, a recording artist who has studied the
vibrational effects of music for
more than 25 years, wrote that music can actually enhance
brain functions.
Chris Brewer, M.A (a noted authority on the integration of
music throughout the curriculum)
highlights the benefits of using music to enhance the learning
environment and to focus the
mind in her book ‘Soundtracks for Learning’.
As a teacher, I have continually used music with positive effect
to aid children's learning.

Stress Relief
The exam period can be a stressful time for many
teenagers so it is important to encourage them to
take time out to relax. This means different things
for different people – but music is a really effective
way to achieve a sense of calm.
Our bodies react & respond to the beat, tempo,
rhythm and pace of music – our breathing changes
& pulse rate can slow down or speed up.
For relaxation your child could try:

Energise
Revision is exhausting; your child will need regular breaks to re-fuel both
nutritionally & mentally. Now is the time to use music to energise.
A 2013 study in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that people who listened
to upbeat music could improve their mood and boost their happiness in just two
weeks. Why not encourage your child to play “Just Dance”; you could even join them –
connect with them & spend some positive time together!

Recall memories
Music creates powerful memories. When we are stressed it is a great idea to change our
mindset to a positive time when we were happy, relaxed, warm, carefree…
Encourage your child to find some music that reminds them of great times - maybe a
holiday, a birthday party, a family day out – whatever works for them. It’s also another great
opportunity to have a chat with them about how they are feeling; open the lines of
communication.
I still play my favourite album whenever I need to take myself to a happy place - driving my
car in the sunshine, roof down, wind in my hair…happy days!
Music is probably the most readily available therapeutic resource available to your child; so
what is stopping you?
Talk to them about this article, buy them an iTunes voucher & encourage them to create
their very own, individual exam stress busting playlist. It really does not matter what they
choose,as long as it works for them.
