•The offered traffic load of a cell is typically characterized by
the following two important random parameters:
•Average number of MSs requesting the service (average call
arrival rate λ)
• Average length of time the MSs requiring the service (average
holding time T) The offered traffic load is defined as a = λT.
•A servicing channel that is kept busy for an hour is
quantitatively defined as one Erlang. Hence, the offered traffic
load for the preceding example by Erlang is

•The average arrival rate is λ, and the average service (departure)
rate is μ. When all channels are busy, an arriving call is turned
away.
•Therefore, this system can be analyzed by a M/M/S/S queuing
model.
•The steady-state probabilities P(i)s for this system have the same
form as those for states i = 0, . . . , S in the M/M/S/∞ model. Here,
S is the number of channels in a cell. Thus, we have where a = λ/μ
