t will be yet another ‘feather in the hat’ moment for Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on
Friday when in the evening the two Congress candidates for Rajya Sabha from state—KC Venu-
gopal and Neeraj Dangi—will receive their electoral letter. The win would have marked Gehlot’s
resolve to bring out the party from any crisis and to do his political opponents ‘one better’.
Whether it was silencing the dissident voices within the party and bringing them ‘on track’, or
foiling BJP’s attempt at ‘poaching’ Congress MLAs, or to revive the feeling of oneness in the
legislative party, or to bring the Independents, BTP and CPM legislators in his fold, at every step
Gehlot has led from the front and as a result the party has 125 votes in its favour going ahead in
the election where it needs only 102 to make its two candidates win. Prior to 2018
Assembly elections, Gehlot had said, “Main thansu door koni” ( I am not far from you), however
a more appropriate version would be—Yo Jeet Su Door Koni —He is never far from victory!

‘Constructing’corruptionatPWDOne Secretary & Project Director are accused of giving state exchequer loss of crores of rupees
Health min Sharma offers
5K Covid tests daily to UP
First India Bureau
Jaipur: Health Min-
ister Dr Raghu Shar-
ma has offered 5000
corona test per day
facility to neighbour-
ing UP. AICC national
secretary and former
UP MLA Vivek Bansal
met the health minis-
ter to congratulate
him on Rajasthan
achieving the feat of
the highest recovery
rate of 75%.
Bansal requested
Dr Sharma to help UP
in testing corona sam-
ples which will bene-
fit the common peo-
ple. Dr Raghu Sharma
told Bansal that the
Congress government
in the state has been
fighting the coronavi-
rus with zero political
bias and had kept the
purview of the tests
wide. He said that un-
der the visionary
leadership of CM
Ashok Gehlot, the
testing capacity
would be further in-
creased to 40,000 per
day. Dr Sharma said
that he was more than
ready to help UP with
5000 corona tests per
day if CM and health
minister of UP re-
quested the same.
AICC secretary
Bansal thanked Shar-
ma for his generous
offer. It is noteworthy
that the state govern-
mentissoontoachieve
its target of 40,000 co-
rona tests per day
which long with dedi-
cated Covid hospitals
and Covid Care Cen-
tres, are sure to bring
down the number of
active cases further
thus giving the state
privilege of being in a
position to help other
states in the fight
against corona.

Jaipur: PWD and its
engineers are infamous
for their off-the-record
activities but this time
a big case of rampant
nature has surfaced
which involves Secre-
tary (PWD) Anup
Kulshreshtha and Pro-
ject Director (PPP)
Kaushlendra Bhardwaj
with the allegation of
giving state exchequer
loss of crores of rupees.
In the year 2016,
Package 3 of PPP was
started with help from
the Asian Develop-
ment Bank. The Rs 900
crore package also had
provision for the con-
struction of other dis-
trict roads (ODR) from
Pilibanga to Lakhuwa-
li. Despite it being an
ODR permission to
start a toll plaza on the
road was given against
the laid rules.
Under gross misuse
of the rules, there was
no action taken to con-
vert the road from ODR
to State Highway (SH)
to make it eligible for a
toll plaza thus doing a
big favor to M/S GR In-
fra against all rules
which state that the toll
plaza should begin im-
mediately on comple-
tion of the road.
Now the biggest part
of the whole corrupt
deal, in order to make
their activities legal
both Kulshreshtha and
Bhardwaj moved the
file for conversion from
ODR to SH in Septem-
ber 2018 to the CMO, as
it could only be ap-
proved from the CM.
Then CM approved
the proposal on Octo-
ber 5, 2018, and the
very next day Election
Commission imple-
mented the Moral Code
of Conduct (MCC) in
the state. It resulted in
a toll plaza being set up
only in February 2019
after formal conver-
sion from ODR to SH.
When the matter was
brought to the notice of
CM and CS an inquiry
under former CE Sunil
Gupta was instituted.
Gupta in his final re-
port found sitting sec-
retaryAnupKulshresh-
tha and then director
(PPP) Kaushlendra
Bharadwaj guilty of
the scam. Now the file
is pending with ACS
Veenu Gupta.
An important aspect
is that Anup
Kulshreshtha is due to
retire on June 30, 2020,
so a quick decision in
the case will not only
help the state govern-
ment recover the loss-
es incurred but will
also be able to take
proper action against
the guilty officers.

Jaipur: After being
closed under the lock-
down, the Board of Rev-
enue will start its func-
tioning from July 1 on-
wards and with this,
preparations will also
begin for the farewell of
its Chairman- Mukesh
Sharma - who will re-
tire on July 31.
A 1984 batch IAS of-
ficer, Sharma took over
the post of Chairman
of the Board in Decem-
ber 2018, prior to whom
former Chairman V
Sriniwas toiled hard to
give a better shape to
the Board. Mukesh
Sharma too, with his
hard-work, tried to
shine Board’s name and
working and if Sharma
had more time at his
disposal, he would have
worked further better-
ing the board.
Sharma had to face
the with acute shortage
of full strength of mem-
bers too since there are
twenty posts of mem-
bers in the Board of
which, 5 are from IAS
quota, 11 from RAS quo-
ta, 2 from Judicial quota
and 2 from advocate
quota and one or the
other posts remained
vacant during his ten-
ure. As of now, all other
quotas are full but two
posts of IASs are va-
cant. In the IAS quota,
Vanita Srivastav and
Shikhar Agarwal are
seated as members and
the new government
had sent Shikhar Agar-
wal, Mukesh Sharma,
and Praveen Gupta to
the Board in 2018, but
Praveen got himself
posted back to Jaipur in
February next year.
Actually, no IAS
wants to go to the Board
of Revenue so much so
that no one is willing to
become Chairman too,
whereas this position is
the second most impor-
tant/powerful position
than Chief Secretary.
Chairman of the Board
of Revenueisapowerful
position as the entire
cadre of Tehsildar and
Patwari falls under the
Chairman.Butsincethe
headquarter is Ajmer,
no one wants to head to
the post and it so hap-
pens that since Board’s
bench is in Jaipur, eve-
ryone stays in Jaipur it-
self and even occupy the
government bungalow
in Jaipur.
Whichever officer a
government becomes
miffed with, they send
them to Ajmer and with-
in the bureaucracy, it is
believedas‘punishment
posting’. in 1985, the
then government had
sent then Chief Secre-
tary Anand Mohan Lal
to Board of Revenue as
Chairman. Anand had
organized a birthday
party on government
expense, on which the
government sent him to
Ajmer. In 2016, Ashok
Shekhar was also sent
to Ajmer after the ‘gov-
ernment’ alleged got
‘miffed’ with him.
In 2017, when OP
Saini was appointed the
Chairman, he left with
a heavy heart for the
new post, and for sever-
al days there was no in-
formation about his
whereabouts. Then the
Board’s advocates even
pasted ‘missing’ posters
of Saini. The bureau-
crat held this position
for seven months took
VRS and then contested
the Lok Sabha elections.
Several times it has
happened that the
Board Chairman and
Revenue Minister have
been at loggerheads
over transfer and post-
ings of patwaris and
tehsildars. In 2006,
when Parmesh Chan-
dra was Chairman, he
came at opposite ends
with the then minister
over transfers. Trans-
fers were to banned that
day and Parmesh Chan-
dra was not ready to re-
lease the list. The mat-
ter was reported to
higher authorities and
it was then that the
transfer list was re-
leased at 11 PM.
But in the current
government, neither
did V Sriniwas or Muke-
sh Sharma create any
hurdle in transfers, and
both the officers issued
the list according to the
minister. But the big-
gest question remains
as to who will be the
next chairman of the
board of revenue.
The name of Ravi
Shankar Srivastava is
doing the rounds based
onseniority,however,he
has been put behind
bars for corruption
while he was a member
of the Board of Reve-
nue. In the second posi-
tion is Giri Raj Singh
however he will retire
after 10 months. After
these two all those who
can become the Chair-
man, are all in the race
for the chair of Chief
Secretary.

Jaipur: Apart from
hard weather and coro-
na, the common man is
also bothered by ever-
increasing fuel prices.
For the last 12-days, Pet-
rol and Diesel prices are
constantly on the rise.
Both, the central and
state governments have
been continuously in-
creasing taxes on Petrol
and Diesel.
In the last 85 days, Pet-
rol is up by Rs 11.47 to Rs
84.79 while Diesel is up
by Rs 10.15 to touch high
of Rs 77.34. In 12 days,
Petrol went up to Rs 6.99
and Diesel Rs 6.93. The
state government has
increased cess on Petrol
and Diesel twice during
lockdown while VAT
was increased thrice
since March 21. Vat on
Petrol went up eight per-
cent and six percent on
Diesel.
Just a day before an-
nouncing lockdown in
the state on March 22,
Chief Minister Ashok
Gehlot had increased
four percent VAT on
Petrol and Diesel each.
This followed by 2 per-
cent on Petrol and one
percent on Diesel twice;
first on April 15 and
later on May 7. Overall
VAT on Petrol in the
state is now 38% and on
Diesel 28%.
It has resulted in Pet-
rol and Diesel becoming
costly by Rs 4.48 per li-
tre and Rs. 3.22 per litre,
respectively. This is de-
spite the fact that crude
prices in the interna-
tional market have been
slipping to touch all-
time low.

armies is not yet known but word from Chi-
na remains unfriendly and unyielding.
Away from Ladakh, the country looks united
in its call to boycott Chinese goods. The tender
for the design and construction of the Delhi-
Meerut stretch of a tunnel for Rapid Rail
Transport System won by the Chinese compa-
ny Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company
has been put on hold. The Centre said that the
bid was yet to be finalised. The government
also said that the tender guidelines “do not per-
mit discrimination based on country or com-
pany”. The Chinese firm was the lowest bidder
for the 5.6 km stretch.
In the telecom sector, the telecom minis-
try is learned to have redrafted the tender
for BSNL’s 4G network up-gradation to
keep Chinese companies out of the process.
Other telcos may also be asked to cut down
their dependence on Chinese components.
After the attack by the PLA, the company
likely to be hit hard is Huawei. The Chinese
telecom giant was allowed to participate in
5G spectrum auction in India despite sev-
eral countries having voiced security con-
cerns against Huawei.

in India. This would require substituting $13 bil-
lion worth of imports from China by December
2021, a tall order given the present state of the
Indian economy. To get an idea, imports from
China in 2018-19 totalled $70 billion.
A bigger challenge lies in the pharma sec-
tor which is heavily dependent on active
pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from the
hostile neighbour. In February this year, Un-
ion minister for chemicals and fertilisers told
the Lok Sabha that two-thirds of the total
import of bulk drugs or drug intermediaries
is from China. Further, 90 percent of APIs for
making antibiotics are imported from China.
It is not that India was blind to this over-de-
pendence. Ajit Doval, the NSA had warned in
2014 that this could be a national security
threat. After the Covid-19 outbreak, India did
put in place to reduce this dependence.
For national pride boycott, Chinese goods
need to be supported, including by TV channels
who have Chinese telecoms as sponsors.

Fired by the clarion call given
by our Hon PM to be At-

to contribute emotionally,
howsoever symbolic it may
be, to the cause. We Indians
are highly emotional people.
Sometimes it gets better of
us by eclipsing the harsh reali-
ties around. Is it really so sim-
ple to wish away Chinese prod-
ucts?
Let us begin with mobile
phones - the most visible and
indispensable part of our
lives. Almost 95% of them
are made in China. The rest
are assembled in India with
parts imported from China.
The Apple CEO Tim Cook
wrote elaborately on why
iPhones are made in China.
It’s not merely the availabil-
ity of low-cost skilled labour
as the popular perception
goes. It’s about an abundant
source of extraordinary
craftsmen, like skilled work-
ers and the robust network
of millions of MSMEs built
by tech savvy owners. The
quantity of talent and skill
available in China cannot be
matched by any other coun-
try, including the US. He
very aptly sums up by stress-
ing on vocational training at
the school-level, which the
other countries still miss.
Mobile phones or electronics
arenottheonlysegmentswhere
we consume Chinese products
in large volumes. The bulk drug
in many medicines are from
China. The electricity genera-
tion plants are now mostly Chi-
nese. A big chunk of dairy ma-
chinery is from China. All the
major consumer products of
famous Indian brands are actu-
ally imported in ready-to-sell
packaging from China. Furni-
ture, air-conditioners, and the
list just goes on -- you name it.
The first thing we need to
realize is that this Chinese
dominance was not built
overnight. They first import-
ed highly sophisticated tech-
nologies in partnership with
global giants and absorbed it
in their system. They per-
fected the art of reverse en-
gineering and of late added
Research and Design to fur-
ther improvise. They have
been adding their global
scale manufacturing capaci-
ties on the back of a strong
network of clusters of MS-
MEs spread across various
industries’ verticals and
across the provinces of PRC.
Most significantly, all this
has happened with the govern-
ment concomitantly investing
in world class infrastructure
at a furious pace. What one
sees today are the results –
rather a paradigm shift- of 25
years of coordinated work
catapulting from one success
to another. That’s why even if
the entire world’s sentiments
may be anti-China, they are
the least bothered.
Cut to the Indian scene.
Chetan Bhagat wrote an ar-
ticle recently in a leading
English daily calling for a
change in the mindset, as he
enumerated three key rea-
sons for lukewarm economic
growth in India:
z Voters don’t care about the
economy.
z Goverment (of all parties) are
anti-business
	z Indian industrialists lack in-
novation.
Add to that an antiquated
educational system that churns
out graduates who can’t talk
comprehensively about their
own subject for even one hour!
These issues just about sum up
the ills the society needs to tack-
le before even thinking about
boycotting Chinese products.
Democracy is a game of
participation. If one does not
actively engage in it, one lets
others decide it by default.
When the consequences stare
in your face, one would have
no reason or even the right
to complain. Most educated
classes live in their comfort
zones. They often avoid any-
thing, which seems uncer-
tain or uncomfortable to
their set lifestyles that may
upset their applecart. They
are aloof or often uncon-
cerned about the social reali-
ties around them. The long
term virtues like hard work,
skill development, innova-
tion, risk management and
the likes so much needed to
build a robust work culture
remain unattended. No won-
der, due to lack of entrepre-
neurial zeal, the growth of
the economy is slowing
down, and the frustration
amongst the educated unem-
ployed is rising.
So what we really do need is
for more sensible people to
start speaking up. Leverage
their knowledge with the power
of social media and build a con-
sensus amongst the youth. Feed
theirnaturalhungerforgrowth
and drive their ambition. The
businesses must not solely look
up to the government for doles
and preferential cuts. Instead
they must demand less red tape
and speedy approvals and min-
imum multiplicity of controls.
It’s only when the educated
class starts taking up entre-
preneurship as a vocation of
choice and not of compul-
sion, will you get to a point
where India is less dependent
on China. Only then it would
be redundant to trend “Boy-
cott Chinese Products.”

oday, the world
faces one of its
most challeng-
ing crises of
the 21st centu-
ry. A tiny yet powerful
virus has been able to
shed light on a number of
questions we all knew but
might not have truly com-
prehended. First, we are
incredibly interconnect-
ed, from Wuhan to Milan
to New York. Second, we
are less immune to global
crises than we would like
to acknowledge, as the se-
riousness of the corona-
virus pandemic has
shown. Third, scarcity is
real, as anyone who has
been to a grocery store
looking for toilet paper at
the start of the outbreak
would agree. The new
norm has been closedness
rather than openness:
Everything from gyms to
public spaces to borders
has been closed, and
quarantine is the word on
everyone’s lips.
The last thing anyone
wants is for the situation to
become chaotic. The cur-
rent state of affairs has led
to a great deal of communal
fear and anxiety. When that
happens, we tend to expect
the worst, and rather than
sit and wait, it is an instinct
to get ready for the fight.
Stocking up is an under-
standable reaction in times
of uncertainty and fear like
these,andstockpilingof dry
andcannedfoodsisevenen-
couraged as preparation for
a crisis. But how can we as-
sure we have enough food at
home while also being
mindful of reducing food
waste?Andhowdowecoun-
tertheCOVID-19emergency
without losing sight of oth-
er creeping crises like envi-
ronmental degradation and
climate change?
HOW WAS IT BEFORE?
Let’s start by understand-
ing that the food waste
problem is not exclusive to
the current times. Accord-
ing to the UN Food and Ag-
riculture Organization, if
food waste were a country,
it would be the 3rd largest
contributor to greenhouse
gas emissions. In Sweden
in particular, 1.3 million
tons of food are wasted,
half of which researchers
classify as unnecessary
waste. Just to give a clear
idea, we are talking about
65 kilograms of unneces-
sary waste for each person
living in Sweden each year.
Sounds like a lot, right?
Most of it is due to house-
hold waste, although some
food is also spilled in the
logistics chain before it
even gets to our plates. But
all of this was before the
COVID-19 crisis.
Food waste reduction is
one of the UN Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs)
set to be reached before
2030 and is considered to be
a strong tool for the bold
goals set by the Paris Cli-
mate Agreement. Accord-
ing to Project Drawdown,
an initiative that lists the
most effective interven-
tions to reduce CO2 emis-
sions, reducing food waste
is the most important
measure to stop global
warming at 2° Celcius. The
whole of society needs to
act to make this goal
achievable. Associate Pro-
fessor Helen Williams,
from Karlstad University,
thinks that “This is a task
for collaborative action be-
tween governments, food
companies, retailers and
consumers.”
However, there are very
few initiatives focused on
reducing food waste in
households, where the
need for good solutions is
more critical as almost
50% of food waste occurs at
home. As a matter of fact,
household food waste is
greater than that of restau-
rant and industrial kitch-
ens combined.
WHAT HAS CHANGED
DUE TO THE CRISIS?
In the current situation,
measuring the impacts of
the crisis on food waste is
quite a challenge. Food
stores have, however, wit-
nessed a clear change in
consumption behavior
with stocking up on food
and a shift from sales from
restaurants to food stores.
In March, ICA, the biggest
food supplier in Sweden,
reported an increase in
consumption, with num-
bers as high as 11% com-
pared to the same time last
year. Similar numbers are
also seen among other
Swedish supermarkets.

Ajmer. In one of the
biggest actions by the
DGGI, state’s one of the
biggest distributor for
Gutka and Miraj prod-
ucts - KT Enterprises in
Ajmer - was raided in
the wee hours of Thurs-
day. The raid on the
Miraj gutkha distrib-
utor by DGGI began
at 4 am on Thursday
morning under the
supervision of ADG,
GST Rajendra Kumar,
involving a large
number of officials
that arrived at the es-
tablishment’s offices
in more than three
dozen vehicles.
Over the past six
months, the GST intel-
ligence had been keep-
ing a close watch on the
big distributors of Mi-
raj gutka and other
brands, for which the
DGGI had received intel
that Miraj Gutka was
being clandestinely
sold at 5 to 20 times its
actual price especially
during the lockdown de-
spite ban by the state
government.
Thus, after six
month long study pe-
riod when the DGGI
officials learnt the
manner in which the
establishment oper-
ated as also about its
revenue stream, a
plan to raid the estab-
lishments was formu-
lated. At 4 am, the offi-
cials barged into the
establishments, thus
not giving anyone a
chance to flee.
Sources reveal that
the officials have un-
covered GST theft
worth crores of rupees
while recovering a hun-
dred bill and receipts
book along with 20
ledger account books.
Plastic bags containing
paper slips have also
been found that denote
large scale unaccount-
ed gutka business.
Sources further re-
veal that prima facie
the sales figure re-
covered from unac-
counted bills point at
exceeding the actual
purchase by KT en-
terprises of Miraj
Gutka and others
brands and a detailed
study of the books
and chits will put
light on the actual
range of GST theft.
Prior to Ajmer raid,
GST intelligence had
raided almost three doz-
en locations or estab-
lishments of Miraj
group including Nath-
dwara, Udaipur and
Ahmedabad and it was
a huge success. Apart
from a few crores undis-
closed income, 152 land
registries were also re-
covered from Miraj
premises and now this
matter is likely to be
taken up by the investi-
gation wing of Income
Tax department to ex-
amine the ‘benami an-
gle’ in these land deals.
According to sources,
inspired with the suc-
cess of Ajmer raid, a
few more major raids
are likely to take
place on various Mi-
rage and other Gutka
distributors in com-
ing days.

TOGETHER WE CAN!
agriti, a social or-
ganization dedicat-
ed to the upliftment
for the underprivi-
leged section of the
society has been
working relentless-
ly since its inception, 24
April 2001.
It has had an unprece-
dented ‘Journey’, from day
one being at the helm of ma-
jor events since ‘Gujarat
Earthquake’intheyear 2001
where it was the Second Aid
to reach with truckloads of
relief material after the
Swiss Aid.
Though it has been an up-
hill task trying to strike at
the very roots of our ailing
system of not being able to
take care of the poorest of
poor in our society, ‘TEAM
JAGRITI’ has been success-
fulinbeingabletogivesome
semblance of dignity to
thesepooranddowntrodden
people. The key to this has
been possible through ‘Edu-
cation’.
We embarked on the jour-
ney of educating the under-
privileged but very soon in
our endeavour we realized
that the first step towards
their upliftment was to edu-
cate the masses and this
would be possible only
through the education of
theirchildren,astheywould
soontakeoverasourambas-
sadors in the coming years.
We started by going to the
slums early morning, when
the complete family is there,
enrolling parents and moti-
vating children to come to
school, was very difficult as
these small children were
also bread earner for them.
Since then there has been
no looking back. Besides
running our own schools in
the heart of biggest slum ar-
eas, we have also been able
to adopt 15 Government and
Private schools in the urban
slums of Jaipur and Ajmer.
Our work has a holistic
approach that includes – Ad-
vocacy and Counselling to
out of the School Students.
Reconstruction and Re-
pair of School Buildings,
Installing Water Stations
and Toilet Blocks Separate
for Boys, Girls and Staff, set-
ting up of Computer labs,
Science lab and Audio-Visu-
al Room and providing for
all other requirements for
running a Model School. All
this has been possible
through a team of dedicated
volunteers on regular basis
(Jagriti has approximately
1868 registered volunteers).
WHEN COVID-19 STRUCK:
All the schools were ordered
to be shut down completely
without any time to plan a
gradual closure in a phased
manner.Jagriti-anorganisa-
tion which is completely
committed to the holistic de-
velopment of slum children
(3800+)spreadacrossthecity
of Jaipurwasalsooneof the
affected Institution.
At Jagriti, the first
thought that came to my
mind was that ‘No Way we
would leave our slum chil-
dren unattended during
these uncertain times’.
No one had a clue how
long this lockdown would
continue. Just the thought
that if left unattended Stu-
dents will definitely fall
back on their old ways of
unhealthy living, wasting
awaytheirlifeasscavengers
and beggars, it was a night-
mare not acceptable at all
under any given circum-
stances.
Duringthetotallockdown
one peculiar problem was
food – getting even the raw
food was impossible – we
took due permissions from
the Government Authori-
ties and distribute the dry
ration food to the families of
our 600 students with the
help of BVG Foundation,
which would last for 1
month. Similarly, Dry Ra-
tion Food Packets were giv-
en to about 1300 needy and
underprivileged families at
Ajmer & Beawer by the Ma-
heshwari Foundation.
THE THINK TANK of
Jagriti Education Commit-
tee seriously contemplated
about the course of action to
be taken under these devas-
tating conditions. It did take
a while to decide how to go
about it, so that we could
rope in not only the students
but their families as well.
Within 10 days of closing
of theSchools,wewereback
to planning strategies to
keep our children safe in
these troubling times, to
help them face challenges
and to learn how to swim
against the tide with their
heads held high.
Theonlywayof gettingin
touch with them was via in-
ternet through mobile
phones.
Knowing that it would not
be easy we did not lose hope,
we started contacting the
students/families,ourteach-
ers started calling their stu-
dentsandsoonwehadagood
network connecting stu-
dents, teachers and family,
and the first step of commu-
nication was established.
Thenextobviousstepwas
to keep them in touch with
their studies. So we planned
Online Classes for our stu-
dents from class IV to class
XII. Counselling, guiding
parents, students and en-
couraging teachers to play a
very important role in being
the connecting factor. The
Online Whatsapp Video
classes are held daily from
10.30 am to 1.00pm.
We can proudly say that
we have been almost hun-
dred per cent successful
with the help of our very
dedicated staff in our mis-
sion ‘EDUCATION’.
“A hundred years from
now it will not matter what
my bank account was, the
sort of house I lived in, or
the kind of car I drove. But
the world will be different
because I was important in
a life of a child.”

O
nline video streaming platform Amazon Prime Video
on Thursday shared the first look poster of Abhishek
Bachchan’s debut web series ‘Breathe Into The Shad-
ows.’ The poster features the ‘Banty Aur Babli’ actor
as seated on a chair in a dark room with a slight tint of light
entering from a shaft. Bachchan is seen holding a piece of
paper which had a person’s picture and ‘missing’ written
over it. ‘A father’s love can save a life...or take one,’ read the
text on the poster. Bachchan also shared the first look poster
on his social media and wrote, “Come back Siya. #BreatheIn-

and Saiyami Kher in significant roles. —ANI
T
he fans are eagerly waiting for MCU’s phase 4
multi-starrer movie featuring Salma, Angeli-
na Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Kit Harington,
Richard Madden and Ma Dong-Seok. The film
will mark a new beginning for the universe and add
new superheroes to the scene. The film went on floors
earlier this year and was being shot in London when
the production of the movie was put on hold due to
the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic.
In her latest Instagram post, Salma shared an im-
age of her new hairstyle and revealed that she dyed
the roots of her hair to prepare for reshoots. “In
anticipation for reshoots, I finally had to do my
roots,” she wrote in the caption. While it is not yet
clear which movie she was talking about, the Marvel
film is the most likely answer, considering the crea-
tors had already started shooting a few action scenes
before COVID 19 shut down. The film is scheduled
to hit the theatres on Febru-
ary 12, 2021.

s Bollywood actor, Sushant Singh
Rajput’s untimely death stirred
a debate over mental health, his
close friend and actor Kriti Sa-
non on Wednesday slammed so-
cial media stating it to be the
“most toxic place.”
“It’s strange that the otherwise troll-
ing, gossiping world suddenly wakes
up to your niceness and positive side
once you are gone..Social media is the
FAKEST, most toxic place,” she tweet-
ed. Sanon who was among the celebri-
ties who attended Rajput’s funeral was
being trolled all over the social media
for not posting condolence message on
social media despite being a close
friend of the actor.
“If you haven’t posted RIP or said
something publicly, you are considered
not to be grieving, when in reality,
those are the people grieving for REAL.
It seems Social Media is the new ‘Real’
world.. and the Real-world has become
‘Fake’,” the ‘Heropanti’ actor further
wrote.
In the next series of her post, Kriti
went on to talk about the stereotypes
in the society that condition men to
hide their sufferings and not cry.
“We need to stop phrases like “ladke
nahi rote”, “aise nahi rote”, “don’t cry,
be strong” .. Crying is not a sign of
weakness.. so cry your heart out,
scream if you need to, know every-
thing that you are feeling, its ok to not
be ok, but talk it out with the one you
feel might understand,” she wrote.
“Take your time to heal.. Hold onto
your family and people who genuinely
love you and care about you.. Never let
them go.. they are your strength and
will be by your side no matter what.. so
LET them be around.. no one is strong
enough to battle life alone,” her note
further read. —ANI
D
eepika Padukone, who has always
been vocal about her own experi-
ence of dealing with depression, on
Thursday, emphasised that depres-
sion is just like any other illness.
Repeating her message on mental ill-
ness, Padukone said depression too is an
illness just like diabetes and cancer. “Re-
peat after me: Depression is an illness like
any other illness such as cancer and diabe-
tes,” Padukone wrote on Twitter.
Padukone had started with the series of
mental health quotes after the sudden de-
mise of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who
committed suicide by hanging himself at
his Bandra residence in Mumbai.
The ‘Tamasha’ actress started voicing
her opinion on the importance of mental
health through her foundation ‘The Live
Love Laugh Foundation’ (TLLLF) in June
2015. Through the platform, the actor
keeps launching nationwide awareness as
well as destigmatisation campaigns.
Meanwhile, scores of comments fol-
lowed on her post on mental health, where
netizens shared their take on issue. —ANI

BINDING THE BODY...
these dresses are a one-size-fits-all solution
for your fashionista needs. There are no rules
when it comes to wearing a bodycon; however,
there are a few tips to follow when picking out
the right bodycon for your sized figure. First
off, remember to always buy a bodycon that
helps show off your best body feature.
Minimise… Just Minimise: Let the
dress be the showstopper and keep
the accessories minimal to avoid
looking OTT. A few key pieces
like a watch, dangling earrings
and a clutch are enough to keep
the look tasteful.
Prints: Printed fabrics can
help hide curves. Just make sure
the prints aren’t too large or look
you might look heavier.
Don’t Forget Shapewear: La-
dies, shapewear is a blessing
and there’s no shame in getting
a little help to make you look
and feel better.
Choose a Darker Color:
With a dark dress, you can
look vertical and elongated,
and it will have a slimming
effect. Black is good but
other dark colours work
well too like purple or
Navy.
Wear the right
shoes: A bodycon
dress screams
glam, don’t kill the
vibe with flats.
Heels will help amp
up the look, while also
elongating your frame and
helping your silhouette
appear slimmer. Last
but not the least, don’t
be shy, because confi-
dence is the new sexy!
CITY FIRST, RAJASTHAN
beautiful talk session,
‘Zindagi Gulzar Hai’
by FICCI Flo with
Anupam Kher was
witnessed by the
members of FLO
Jaipur Chapter. The
session was organised and
moderated by Chairperson
Wandana Parnami.
The conversation with Anu-
pam Kher was a mix of come-
dy, music and learning. Kher,
an eternal optimist finds hap-
piness in small things and
with what one has. Pro-
fessional success and
personal success accord-
ing to him is different. For an
actor playing different charac-
ters are difficult unless n until
you feel that character from
within. He said, “An
event fails not a person.”
Failure should be cele-
brated as it is multidimension-
al and progressing. Medita-
tion is to look inside you. He
felt believes that a good even-
ing spent with friends is better
than a party full of noises.
The most important thing in
this pandemic situation is to
talk to people. “Great conversa-
tions are great holidays. In this
lockdown I have learnt to be
patient and that I’m not rest-
less. A piece of advice for the
young generation is to spend
more time with their parents
and listen to their stories. Guts
and attitude of a person de-
fines himself. Three important
things a person should have is
ummeed, asha, dayabhav.”

RAJENG/2019/77764 l Vol 2 l Issue No. 13 all set to Win Gehlot Kartikey Dev Singh t will be yet another ‘feather in the hat’ moment for Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday when in the evening the two Congress candidates for Rajya Sabha from state—KC Venu- gopal and Neeraj Dangi—will receive their electoral letter. The win would have marked Gehlot’s resolve to bring out the party from any crisis and to do his political opponents ‘one better’. Whether it was silencing the dissident voices within the party and bringing them ‘on track’, or foiling BJP’s attempt at ‘poaching’ Congress MLAs, or to revive the feeling of oneness in the legislative party, or to bring the Independents, BTP and CPM legislators in his fold, at every step Gehlot has led from the front and as a result the party has 125 votes in its favour going ahead in the election where it needs only 102 to make its two candidates win. Prior to 2018 Assembly elections, Gehlot had said, “Main thansu door koni” ( I am not far from you), however a more appropriate version would be—Yo Jeet Su Door Koni —He is never far from victory! I
  • 2. NEWSJAIPUR | FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 2020 02www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epaper/ I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia ‘Constructing’corruptionatPWDOne Secretary & Project Director are accused of giving state exchequer loss of crores of rupees Health min Sharma offers 5K Covid tests daily to UP First India Bureau Jaipur: Health Min- ister Dr Raghu Shar- ma has offered 5000 corona test per day facility to neighbour- ing UP. AICC national secretary and former UP MLA Vivek Bansal met the health minis- ter to congratulate him on Rajasthan achieving the feat of the highest recovery rate of 75%. Bansal requested Dr Sharma to help UP in testing corona sam- ples which will bene- fit the common peo- ple. Dr Raghu Sharma told Bansal that the Congress government in the state has been fighting the coronavi- rus with zero political bias and had kept the purview of the tests wide. He said that un- der the visionary leadership of CM Ashok Gehlot, the testing capacity would be further in- creased to 40,000 per day. Dr Sharma said that he was more than ready to help UP with 5000 corona tests per day if CM and health minister of UP re- quested the same. AICC secretary Bansal thanked Shar- ma for his generous offer. It is noteworthy that the state govern- mentissoontoachieve its target of 40,000 co- rona tests per day which long with dedi- cated Covid hospitals and Covid Care Cen- tres, are sure to bring down the number of active cases further thus giving the state privilege of being in a position to help other states in the fight against corona. Nirmal Tiwari Jaipur: PWD and its engineers are infamous for their off-the-record activities but this time a big case of rampant nature has surfaced which involves Secre- tary (PWD) Anup Kulshreshtha and Pro- ject Director (PPP) Kaushlendra Bhardwaj with the allegation of giving state exchequer loss of crores of rupees. In the year 2016, Package 3 of PPP was started with help from the Asian Develop- ment Bank. The Rs 900 crore package also had provision for the con- struction of other dis- trict roads (ODR) from Pilibanga to Lakhuwa- li. Despite it being an ODR permission to start a toll plaza on the road was given against the laid rules. Under gross misuse of the rules, there was no action taken to con- vert the road from ODR to State Highway (SH) to make it eligible for a toll plaza thus doing a big favor to M/S GR In- fra against all rules which state that the toll plaza should begin im- mediately on comple- tion of the road. Now the biggest part of the whole corrupt deal, in order to make their activities legal both Kulshreshtha and Bhardwaj moved the file for conversion from ODR to SH in Septem- ber 2018 to the CMO, as it could only be ap- proved from the CM. Then CM approved the proposal on Octo- ber 5, 2018, and the very next day Election Commission imple- mented the Moral Code of Conduct (MCC) in the state. It resulted in a toll plaza being set up only in February 2019 after formal conver- sion from ODR to SH. When the matter was brought to the notice of CM and CS an inquiry under former CE Sunil Gupta was instituted. Gupta in his final re- port found sitting sec- retaryAnupKulshresh- tha and then director (PPP) Kaushlendra Bharadwaj guilty of the scam. Now the file is pending with ACS Veenu Gupta. An important aspect is that Anup Kulshreshtha is due to retire on June 30, 2020, so a quick decision in the case will not only help the state govern- ment recover the loss- es incurred but will also be able to take proper action against the guilty officers. First India Bureau Jaipur: A major centre of the Stone Processing Machine manufactur- ers, Rajasthan sets fo- cus on R&D, Collabora- tions, and Transfer of Technology in the de- velopment of indige- nous technology. RIICO during an online inter- action with representa- tives from Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Indus- try on Wednesday ex- pressed support to the industrialists in the process and insisted them to associate reput- ed institutions like IITs, NITs and Academia in the state for R&D. The web interaction organ- ized by CDOS along with FICCI was sup- ported by RIICO. “Indian machinery sector has made fast progress but Rajasthan has emerged as a major centre of the Stone Pro- cessing Machine manu- facturing in India and this need to be lever- aged further,” MD RII- CO, Ashutosh AT Ped- nekar expressed on the objectives of the indus- try representative meet. Carving success: Raj focuses on opportunities in machine sector —Pic for representational purpose only Fuel price hiked for 12th consecutive day leaving Raj commuters in distress Rajendra Chhabra Jaipur: After being closed under the lock- down, the Board of Rev- enue will start its func- tioning from July 1 on- wards and with this, preparations will also begin for the farewell of its Chairman- Mukesh Sharma - who will re- tire on July 31. A 1984 batch IAS of- ficer, Sharma took over the post of Chairman of the Board in Decem- ber 2018, prior to whom former Chairman V Sriniwas toiled hard to give a better shape to the Board. Mukesh Sharma too, with his hard-work, tried to shine Board’s name and working and if Sharma had more time at his disposal, he would have worked further better- ing the board. Sharma had to face the with acute shortage of full strength of mem- bers too since there are twenty posts of mem- bers in the Board of which, 5 are from IAS quota, 11 from RAS quo- ta, 2 from Judicial quota and 2 from advocate quota and one or the other posts remained vacant during his ten- ure. As of now, all other quotas are full but two posts of IASs are va- cant. In the IAS quota, Vanita Srivastav and Shikhar Agarwal are seated as members and the new government had sent Shikhar Agar- wal, Mukesh Sharma, and Praveen Gupta to the Board in 2018, but Praveen got himself posted back to Jaipur in February next year. Actually, no IAS wants to go to the Board of Revenue so much so that no one is willing to become Chairman too, whereas this position is the second most impor- tant/powerful position than Chief Secretary. Chairman of the Board of Revenueisapowerful position as the entire cadre of Tehsildar and Patwari falls under the Chairman.Butsincethe headquarter is Ajmer, no one wants to head to the post and it so hap- pens that since Board’s bench is in Jaipur, eve- ryone stays in Jaipur it- self and even occupy the government bungalow in Jaipur. Whichever officer a government becomes miffed with, they send them to Ajmer and with- in the bureaucracy, it is believedas‘punishment posting’. in 1985, the then government had sent then Chief Secre- tary Anand Mohan Lal to Board of Revenue as Chairman. Anand had organized a birthday party on government expense, on which the government sent him to Ajmer. In 2016, Ashok Shekhar was also sent to Ajmer after the ‘gov- ernment’ alleged got ‘miffed’ with him. In 2017, when OP Saini was appointed the Chairman, he left with a heavy heart for the new post, and for sever- al days there was no in- formation about his whereabouts. Then the Board’s advocates even pasted ‘missing’ posters of Saini. The bureau- crat held this position for seven months took VRS and then contested the Lok Sabha elections. Several times it has happened that the Board Chairman and Revenue Minister have been at loggerheads over transfer and post- ings of patwaris and tehsildars. In 2006, when Parmesh Chan- dra was Chairman, he came at opposite ends with the then minister over transfers. Trans- fers were to banned that day and Parmesh Chan- dra was not ready to re- lease the list. The mat- ter was reported to higher authorities and it was then that the transfer list was re- leased at 11 PM. But in the current government, neither did V Sriniwas or Muke- sh Sharma create any hurdle in transfers, and both the officers issued the list according to the minister. But the big- gest question remains as to who will be the next chairman of the board of revenue. The name of Ravi Shankar Srivastava is doing the rounds based onseniority, however,he has been put behind bars for corruption while he was a member of the Board of Reve- nue. In the second posi- tion is Giri Raj Singh however he will retire after 10 months. After these two all those who can become the Chair- man, are all in the race for the chair of Chief Secretary. IS REVENUE BOARD POSTING A PUNISHMENT? SEARCH IS ON FOR A NEW CHAIRMAN! Mukesh Sharma Revenue Board in Ajmer First India Bureau Jaipur: Apart from hard weather and coro- na, the common man is also bothered by ever- increasing fuel prices. For the last 12-days, Pet- rol and Diesel prices are constantly on the rise. Both, the central and state governments have been continuously in- creasing taxes on Petrol and Diesel. In the last 85 days, Pet- rol is up by Rs 11.47 to Rs 84.79 while Diesel is up by Rs 10.15 to touch high of Rs 77.34. In 12 days, Petrol went up to Rs 6.99 and Diesel Rs 6.93. The state government has increased cess on Petrol and Diesel twice during lockdown while VAT was increased thrice since March 21. Vat on Petrol went up eight per- cent and six percent on Diesel. Just a day before an- nouncing lockdown in the state on March 22, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had increased four percent VAT on Petrol and Diesel each. This followed by 2 per- cent on Petrol and one percent on Diesel twice; first on April 15 and later on May 7. Overall VAT on Petrol in the state is now 38% and on Diesel 28%. It has resulted in Pet- rol and Diesel becoming costly by Rs 4.48 per li- tre and Rs. 3.22 per litre, respectively. This is de- spite the fact that crude prices in the interna- tional market have been slipping to touch all- time low. Lt Gen SK Saini visits Jaipur Military Station First India Bureau Jaipur: Lt Gen SK Saini, Vice Chief of Army Staff visited Jaipur Military Station on Thursday. As Colonel of the JAT Regiment, the Vice Chief paid homage to the martyrs of JAT Regiment battal- ion at the Battalion Quarter Guard in Ni- waru. He addressed the troops of battalion mo- tivating them to contin- ue with their excellent work. VCOAS thereafter visited HQ Sapta Shakti Command. Jaipur International Airport has been ranked 13th in the sur- vey. The survey is con- ducted by Airport Council International and 22 airports of the country were included in the survey. The sur- vey was conducted on 33 standards of various facilities at the airport. In this survey, infor- mation is taken on vari- ous points from the pas- sengers regarding reaching airport, park- ing facilities, the behav- iour of airlines during departure, the behav- iour of security person- nel, cleaning system, seating arrangement, food facilities, shopping facilities, etc. ‘Felicitatecoronawarriors, help needy, tomarkRAGAsB’day’ First India Bureau Jaipur: Deputy CM and PCC chief Sachin Pilot has appealed to the Con- gressmen to celebrate former AICC President Rahul Gandhi’s birth- day today by felicitating the corona warriors and helping the poor in the state. Pilot said that due to the ongoing Cov- id-19 crisis and to re- spect the martyrdom of the soldiers on Indo- Chinese LAC, Rahul Gandhi will not be cel- ebrating his birthday ceremonially. Pilot ap- pealed to Congressmen to also not organize any function but use the oc- casion to serve the poor and needy by distribut- ing food material. He also invoked party men to observe a two-minute silence in respect of the martyred soldiers. Pilot asked his party mem- bers to help the corona warriors like doctors, health workers, with PPE kits, etc. Sachin Pilot Raghu Sharma Vivek Bansal —Pic for representational purpose only —Pic for representational purpose only ECI rejects plaint by BSP, says it does not come under purview Dr Rituraj Sharma New Delhi: ECI has rejected the complaint by BSP calling the merger of 6 BSP MLAs in INC. ECI has in- formed the Rajasthan Rajya Sabha election returning officer and the complaining party of the same. This clears the way for the election and counting for vacant seats of the upper house from Ra- jasthan as per laid rules and regulations. BSP in its complaint hasstatedthatitisana- tional party the merger was unconstitutional and had demanded ac- tionagainstthe6MLAs under the anti-defec- tion law. BSP had raised questions on the Congress voting list showing 6 BSP MLAs as part of its legislative party. Twenty Indian sol- diers were martyred in the attack. As tough questions are hurled at the government, clear-cut answers are not forthcoming. The mood of the nation is for revenge. Acquisi- tion of Sukhoi-30 and MiG-29s, along with making Brahmos - the long-distance cruise missile - ready for deployment is sending right signals to the people. But it doesn’t seem that our new acquisitions and battle preparedness have sent a chill down China’s spine. The outcome after over six-hour long talks between top commanders of the two armies is not yet known but word from Chi- na remains unfriendly and unyielding. Away from Ladakh, the country looks united in its call to boycott Chinese goods. The tender for the design and construction of the Delhi- Meerut stretch of a tunnel for Rapid Rail Transport System won by the Chinese compa- ny Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company has been put on hold. The Centre said that the bid was yet to be finalised. The government also said that the tender guidelines “do not per- mit discrimination based on country or com- pany”. The Chinese firm was the lowest bidder for the 5.6 km stretch. In the telecom sector, the telecom minis- try is learned to have redrafted the tender for BSNL’s 4G network up-gradation to keep Chinese companies out of the process. Other telcos may also be asked to cut down their dependence on Chinese components. After the attack by the PLA, the company likely to be hit hard is Huawei. The Chinese telecom giant was allowed to participate in 5G spectrum auction in India despite sev- eral countries having voiced security con- cerns against Huawei. This would require substituting $13 bil- lion worth of imports from China by December 2021, a tall order given the present state of the Indian economy. To get an idea, imports from China in 2018-19 totalled $70 billion. A bigger challenge lies in the pharma sec- tor which is heavily dependent on active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from the hostile neighbour. In February this year, Un- ion minister for chemicals and fertilisers told the Lok Sabha that two-thirds of the total import of bulk drugs or drug intermediaries is from China. Further, 90 percent of APIs for making antibiotics are imported from China. It is not that India was blind to this over-de- pendence. Ajit Doval, the NSA had warned in 2014 that this could be a national security threat. After the Covid-19 outbreak, India did put in place to reduce this dependence. For national pride boycott, Chinese goods need to be supported, including by TV channels who have Chinese telecoms as sponsors. IN-DEPTH T have deleted all Chinese Apps. Have you?” This seems to have caught up on social media. Fired by the clarion call given by our Hon PM to be At- manirbhar, everyone is keen to contribute emotionally, howsoever symbolic it may be, to the cause. We Indians are highly emotional people. Sometimes it gets better of us by eclipsing the harsh reali- ties around. Is it really so sim- ple to wish away Chinese prod- ucts? Let us begin with mobile phones - the most visible and indispensable part of our lives. Almost 95% of them are made in China. The rest are assembled in India with parts imported from China. The Apple CEO Tim Cook wrote elaborately on why iPhones are made in China. It’s not merely the availabil- ity of low-cost skilled labour as the popular perception goes. It’s about an abundant source of extraordinary craftsmen, like skilled work- ers and the robust network of millions of MSMEs built by tech savvy owners. The quantity of talent and skill available in China cannot be matched by any other coun- try, including the US. He very aptly sums up by stress- ing on vocational training at the school-level, which the other countries still miss. Mobile phones or electronics arenottheonlysegmentswhere we consume Chinese products in large volumes. The bulk drug in many medicines are from China. The electricity genera- tion plants are now mostly Chi- nese. A big chunk of dairy ma- chinery is from China. All the major consumer products of famous Indian brands are actu- ally imported in ready-to-sell packaging from China. Furni- ture, air-conditioners, and the list just goes on -- you name it. The first thing we need to realize is that this Chinese dominance was not built overnight. They first import- ed highly sophisticated tech- nologies in partnership with global giants and absorbed it in their system. They per- fected the art of reverse en- gineering and of late added Research and Design to fur- ther improvise. They have been adding their global scale manufacturing capaci- ties on the back of a strong network of clusters of MS- MEs spread across various industries’ verticals and across the provinces of PRC. Most significantly, all this has happened with the govern- ment concomitantly investing in world class infrastructure at a furious pace. What one sees today are the results – rather a paradigm shift- of 25 years of coordinated work catapulting from one success to another. That’s why even if the entire world’s sentiments may be anti-China, they are the least bothered. Cut to the Indian scene. Chetan Bhagat wrote an ar- ticle recently in a leading English daily calling for a change in the mindset, as he enumerated three key rea- sons for lukewarm economic growth in India: z Voters don’t care about the economy. z Goverment (of all parties) are anti-business z Indian industrialists lack in- novation. Add to that an antiquated educational system that churns out graduates who can’t talk comprehensively about their own subject for even one hour! These issues just about sum up the ills the society needs to tack- le before even thinking about boycotting Chinese products. Democracy is a game of participation. If one does not actively engage in it, one lets others decide it by default. When the consequences stare in your face, one would have no reason or even the right to complain. Most educated classes live in their comfort zones. They often avoid any- thing, which seems uncer- tain or uncomfortable to their set lifestyles that may upset their applecart. They are aloof or often uncon- cerned about the social reali- ties around them. The long term virtues like hard work, skill development, innova- tion, risk management and the likes so much needed to build a robust work culture remain unattended. No won- der, due to lack of entrepre- neurial zeal, the growth of the economy is slowing down, and the frustration amongst the educated unem- ployed is rising. So what we really do need is for more sensible people to start speaking up. Leverage their knowledge with the power of social media and build a con- sensus amongst the youth. Feed theirnaturalhungerforgrowth and drive their ambition. The businesses must not solely look up to the government for doles and preferential cuts. Instead they must demand less red tape and speedy approvals and min- imum multiplicity of controls. It’s only when the educated class starts taking up entre- preneurship as a vocation of choice and not of compul- sion, will you get to a point where India is less dependent on China. Only then it would be redundant to trend “Boy- cott Chinese Products.” THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL YOU CAN’T BOYCOTT THE DRAGON BY RHETORIC “ I Mobile phones or electronics are not the only segments where we consume Chinese products in large volumes. When the consequences stare in your face, one would have no reason or even the right to complain ANIL KUMAR JAIN President of Gandhidham Chamber of Commerce & IIM Bangalore alumnus oday, the world faces one of its most challeng- ing crises of the 21st centu- ry. A tiny yet powerful virus has been able to shed light on a number of questions we all knew but might not have truly com- prehended. First, we are incredibly interconnect- ed, from Wuhan to Milan to New York. Second, we are less immune to global crises than we would like to acknowledge, as the se- riousness of the corona- virus pandemic has shown. Third, scarcity is real, as anyone who has been to a grocery store looking for toilet paper at the start of the outbreak would agree. The new norm has been closedness rather than openness: Everything from gyms to public spaces to borders has been closed, and quarantine is the word on everyone’s lips. The last thing anyone wants is for the situation to become chaotic. The cur- rent state of affairs has led to a great deal of communal fear and anxiety. When that happens, we tend to expect the worst, and rather than sit and wait, it is an instinct to get ready for the fight. Stocking up is an under- standable reaction in times of uncertainty and fear like these, andstockpilingof dry andcannedfoodsisevenen- couraged as preparation for a crisis. But how can we as- sure we have enough food at home while also being mindful of reducing food waste?Andhowdowecoun- tertheCOVID-19emergency without losing sight of oth- er creeping crises like envi- ronmental degradation and climate change? HOW WAS IT BEFORE? Let’s start by understand- ing that the food waste problem is not exclusive to the current times. Accord- ing to the UN Food and Ag- riculture Organization, if food waste were a country, it would be the 3rd largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. In Sweden in particular, 1.3 million tons of food are wasted, half of which researchers classify as unnecessary waste. Just to give a clear idea, we are talking about 65 kilograms of unneces- sary waste for each person living in Sweden each year. Sounds like a lot, right? Most of it is due to house- hold waste, although some food is also spilled in the logistics chain before it even gets to our plates. But all of this was before the COVID-19 crisis. Food waste reduction is one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set to be reached before 2030 and is considered to be a strong tool for the bold goals set by the Paris Cli- mate Agreement. Accord- ing to Project Drawdown, an initiative that lists the most effective interven- tions to reduce CO2 emis- sions, reducing food waste is the most important measure to stop global warming at 2° Celcius. The whole of society needs to act to make this goal achievable. Associate Pro- fessor Helen Williams, from Karlstad University, thinks that “This is a task for collaborative action be- tween governments, food companies, retailers and consumers.” However, there are very few initiatives focused on reducing food waste in households, where the need for good solutions is more critical as almost 50% of food waste occurs at home. As a matter of fact, household food waste is greater than that of restau- rant and industrial kitch- ens combined. WHAT HAS CHANGED DUE TO THE CRISIS? In the current situation, measuring the impacts of the crisis on food waste is quite a challenge. Food stores have, however, wit- nessed a clear change in consumption behavior with stocking up on food and a shift from sales from restaurants to food stores. In March, ICA, the biggest food supplier in Sweden, reported an increase in consumption, with num- bers as high as 11% com- pared to the same time last year. Similar numbers are also seen among other Swedish supermarkets. FOR FULL REPORT LOG ON TO WWW.FAIROBSERVER.COM Will COVID-19 help us end food waste? T All wrong-doing arises because of mind. Voting will take place from 9 am to 4 pm at Rajasthan Assembly building and the counting of votes will take place from 5 pm Kaushal Jain Ajmer. In one of the biggest actions by the DGGI, state’s one of the biggest distributor for Gutka and Miraj prod- ucts - KT Enterprises in Ajmer - was raided in the wee hours of Thurs- day. The raid on the Miraj gutkha distrib- utor by DGGI began at 4 am on Thursday morning under the supervision of ADG, GST Rajendra Kumar, involving a large number of officials that arrived at the es- tablishment’s offices in more than three dozen vehicles. Over the past six months, the GST intel- ligence had been keep- ing a close watch on the big distributors of Mi- raj gutka and other brands, for which the DGGI had received intel that Miraj Gutka was being clandestinely sold at 5 to 20 times its actual price especially during the lockdown de- spite ban by the state government. Thus, after six month long study pe- riod when the DGGI officials learnt the manner in which the establishment oper- ated as also about its revenue stream, a plan to raid the estab- lishments was formu- lated. At 4 am, the offi- cials barged into the establishments, thus not giving anyone a chance to flee. Sources reveal that the officials have un- covered GST theft worth crores of rupees while recovering a hun- dred bill and receipts book along with 20 ledger account books. Plastic bags containing paper slips have also been found that denote large scale unaccount- ed gutka business. Sources further re- veal that prima facie the sales figure re- covered from unac- counted bills point at exceeding the actual purchase by KT en- terprises of Miraj Gutka and others brands and a detailed study of the books and chits will put light on the actual range of GST theft. Prior to Ajmer raid, GST intelligence had raided almost three doz- en locations or estab- lishments of Miraj group including Nath- dwara, Udaipur and Ahmedabad and it was a huge success. Apart from a few crores undis- closed income, 152 land registries were also re- covered from Miraj premises and now this matter is likely to be taken up by the investi- gation wing of Income Tax department to ex- amine the ‘benami an- gle’ in these land deals. According to sources, inspired with the suc- cess of Ajmer raid, a few more major raids are likely to take place on various Mi- rage and other Gutka distributors in com- ing days. TOGETHER WE CAN! agriti, a social or- ganization dedicat- ed to the upliftment for the underprivi- leged section of the society has been working relentless- ly since its inception, 24 April 2001. It has had an unprece- dented ‘Journey’, from day one being at the helm of ma- jor events since ‘Gujarat Earthquake’intheyear 2001 where it was the Second Aid to reach with truckloads of relief material after the Swiss Aid. Though it has been an up- hill task trying to strike at the very roots of our ailing system of not being able to take care of the poorest of poor in our society, ‘TEAM JAGRITI’ has been success- fulinbeingabletogivesome semblance of dignity to thesepooranddowntrodden people. The key to this has been possible through ‘Edu- cation’. We embarked on the jour- ney of educating the under- privileged but very soon in our endeavour we realized that the first step towards their upliftment was to edu- cate the masses and this would be possible only through the education of theirchildren, astheywould soontakeoverasourambas- sadors in the coming years. We started by going to the slums early morning, when the complete family is there, enrolling parents and moti- vating children to come to school, was very difficult as these small children were also bread earner for them. Since then there has been no looking back. Besides running our own schools in the heart of biggest slum ar- eas, we have also been able to adopt 15 Government and Private schools in the urban slums of Jaipur and Ajmer. Our work has a holistic approach that includes – Ad- vocacy and Counselling to out of the School Students. Reconstruction and Re- pair of School Buildings, Installing Water Stations and Toilet Blocks Separate for Boys, Girls and Staff, set- ting up of Computer labs, Science lab and Audio-Visu- al Room and providing for all other requirements for running a Model School. All this has been possible through a team of dedicated volunteers on regular basis (Jagriti has approximately 1868 registered volunteers). WHEN COVID-19 STRUCK: All the schools were ordered to be shut down completely without any time to plan a gradual closure in a phased manner.Jagriti-anorganisa- tion which is completely committed to the holistic de- velopment of slum children (3800+)spreadacrossthecity of Jaipurwasalsooneof the affected Institution. At Jagriti, the first thought that came to my mind was that ‘No Way we would leave our slum chil- dren unattended during these uncertain times’. No one had a clue how long this lockdown would continue. Just the thought that if left unattended Stu- dents will definitely fall back on their old ways of unhealthy living, wasting awaytheirlifeasscavengers and beggars, it was a night- mare not acceptable at all under any given circum- stances. Duringthetotallockdown one peculiar problem was food – getting even the raw food was impossible – we took due permissions from the Government Authori- ties and distribute the dry ration food to the families of our 600 students with the help of BVG Foundation, which would last for 1 month. Similarly, Dry Ra- tion Food Packets were giv- en to about 1300 needy and underprivileged families at Ajmer & Beawer by the Ma- heshwari Foundation. THE THINK TANK of Jagriti Education Commit- tee seriously contemplated about the course of action to be taken under these devas- tating conditions. It did take a while to decide how to go about it, so that we could rope in not only the students but their families as well. Within 10 days of closing of theSchools, wewereback to planning strategies to keep our children safe in these troubling times, to help them face challenges and to learn how to swim against the tide with their heads held high. Theonlywayof gettingin touch with them was via in- ternet through mobile phones. Knowing that it would not be easy we did not lose hope, we started contacting the students/families,ourteach- ers started calling their stu- dentsandsoonwehadagood network connecting stu- dents, teachers and family, and the first step of commu- nication was established. Thenextobviousstepwas to keep them in touch with their studies. So we planned Online Classes for our stu- dents from class IV to class XII. Counselling, guiding parents, students and en- couraging teachers to play a very important role in being the connecting factor. The Online Whatsapp Video classes are held daily from 10.30 am to 1.00pm. We can proudly say that we have been almost hun- dred per cent successful with the help of our very dedicated staff in our mis- sion ‘EDUCATION’. “A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. But the world will be different because I was important in a life of a child.” EDUCATION FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED BY JAGRITI IN THE TIMES OF COVID-19 JK JAJOO cityfirst@firstindia.co.in J

First off, remember to always buy a bodycon that helps show off your best body feature. Minimise… Just Minimise: Let the dress be the showstopper and keep the accessories minimal to avoid looking OTT. A few key pieces like a watch, dangling earrings and a clutch are enough to keep the look tasteful. Prints: Printed fabrics can help hide curves. Just make sure the prints aren’t too large or look you might look heavier. Don’t Forget Shapewear: La- dies, shapewear is a blessing and there’s no shame in getting a little help to make you look and feel better. Choose a Darker Color: With a dark dress, you can look vertical and elongated, and it will have a slimming effect. Black is good but other dark colours work well too like purple or Navy. Wear the right shoes: A bodycon dress screams glam, don’t kill the vibe with flats. Heels will help amp up the look, while also elongating your frame and helping your silhouette appear slimmer.
