Washington: Former
vice-president Hamid
Ansari and four US law-
makers have expressed
concern over the cur-
rent human rights situ-
ation in India. They
were speaking at a vir-

organised by the Indian
American Muslim
Council on Wednesday
.
“As the Indian gov-

target the practices of
minority faiths, it cre-
ates an atmosphere
where discrimination
and violence can take
root,” said Democratic
Senator Ed Markey
.
Former vice presi-

pressed his concern.
“In recent years, we
have experienced the
emergence of trends
and practises that dis-
pute the well estab-

nationalism, and inter-
poses a new and imagi-

said, adding that “al-

Patel has already

due to industrial ac-
cidents and harmful
toxic chemicals over
the past five years,
with Surat district
seeing a lion’s share
of these deaths
caused by negli-
gence, he said.
Notably, Surat
Sachin GIDC alone
accounts for 50 tex-
tile dyeing and
printing mills more
than 40 chemical
units and some pow-
er-loom units-most
of which use mi-
grant labour from
Odisha, Bihar and
Uttar Pradesh.
“The Sabarmati,
Tapi, Vishwamitri
and 17 other rivers
in Gujarat are
among the most pol-
luted rivers in the
country. And yet,
several reports
show that at least
five to six trucks
loaded with untreat-
ed toxic chemical
waste are illegally
dumped in the city
sewers each day,
with the blessings
of the Gujarat Pollu-
tion Control Board.
Authorities are de-
liberately turning a
blind eye to the nex-
us between the unit
owners and the
GIDC authorities,”
Thakor also alleged,
adding that this has
allowed an increase
in pollution which,
in turn, has put peo-
ple’s lives at risk.

Rajkot police to face contempt charges: HC
First India Bureau
Ahmedabad: The
High Court will initi-
ate a process of fram-
ing charges of con-
tempt of court against
the Rajkot police in-
cluding, the police
commissioner, for fail-
ing to respect and
abide by the court or-
der.
Rajkot Police had
beaten an accused in
2016, who then moved
a petition against po-
lice atrocity. The high
court had asked the
police to settle the is-
sue outside the court
and report it. To date,
the order is not re-
spected and, no report
has been filed. It is a
contempt of court and
hence, a case to initi-
ate charges against
Rajkot police.
It has ordered all po-
lice officials being
shown as respondents
to appear online be-
fore the court on Feb-
ruary 1, when the
charges will be initi-
ated. One of the re-
spondents is former
police commissioner
Anupsingh Gehlot.
3 held for rape
of Surat minor
First India Bureau
Surat: The Dindoli
police on Thursday
arrested three people
for allegedly raping a
ninth class student
of Chikhali. The vic-
tim came in touch
with the accused af-
ter running away
from family and
house in Chikhali.
PSI KB Desai said
that the victim had
escaped her house
because her parents
wanted her to get
married. She came
in contact with the
accused Suraj Singh
in Surat about a
year-and-a-half ago,
the first time she fled
her house. She had
started living with
him then. The vic-
tim claims that Suraj
had tried to rape her
even then.
This time again,
after fleeing from her
house she reached
Surat and met Suraj.
He assured her of a
place to stay in Din-
doli. But a week ago,
it was found that the
teenager had been
constantly molested
by her friend Suraj
and his two associ-
ates, Vimlesh Pathak
and Chandan Jha.
The trio took the
16-year-old girl to a
closed building of
SMC residence and
allegedly raped her.
They left the victim
there, who then
reached the furni-
ture shop, where she
was working and told
everything to the
owner of the shop
Sanjaybhai. He then
helped her file a com-
plaint. A medical ex-
amination is still
pending. Unfortu-
nately, the family
members have dis-
owned the victim.
IS THERE TROUBLE
WAITING FOR THE
FORMER CM?
A petition is moved before
the HC for a self-immolation
case in Rajkot. Three mem-
bers of a Nepali family had
attempted suicide in April
2013, opposing pressure by
builders and politicians to
vacate the house in the com-
mon plot of a society where
they were living. Mahendra
and Gauri Nepali in, their dy-
ing declaration, had named
three politicians, including
former chief minister Vijay
Rupani. The matter is pend-
ing to be heard.

HERCULEAN
TASK FOR BJP IN
WESTERN UTTAR
PRADESH?
nion Home Minister
Amit Shah visiting
door-to-door in one
of the western UP
districts, makes for a
worrisome picture for BJP in
Western UP. As Shah has taken
on this Herlecuean task, it sug-
gests a feeling of disquietude in
the party. Watching Shah seek-
ing votes for his party in Ma-
thura-Vrindavan and earlier
trying to entice Jayant Chaud-
hary of the Rashtriya Lok Dal
into his party when one cannot
recall seeing such visuals in ei-
ther 2014 or 2019, gives a hint of
the picture. Western UP is cen-
tral to BJP’s election strategy.
Of the 70 seats in 20 districts of
Meerut, Saharanpur and Mo-
radabad, the party had won 51
in 2017. The region goes to vote
in the first two phases on Febru-
ary 10 and 14.
Deaths of about 700 farmers
during their year-long protest
against the controversial farm
laws may make it difficult for
BJP to repeat that performance.
To BJP’s disadvantage, the-Jat-
Muslim communal divide has
apparently been bridged to an
extent. The SP-RLD tie-up may
also queer the pitch for BJP.
U
tudents and job-
seekers vent their
anger over Rail-
way Recruitment
Board’s incompe-
tence by burning trains and
damaging railways property
.
As a double whammy, they
were chased and beaten up by
the police. Those protesting
were students from Bihar
and poll-bound Uttar
Pradesh. The violent protests
began on January 24, after
RRB declared the results of
the first phase of examina-
tions held across the country
on January 10. The RRB fi-
asco is a cruel joke on thou-
sands of unemployed youth.
Around the time of parlia-
mentary elections in 2019,
railways invited applica-
tions for a little over 35000
Non-Technical Popular Cat-
egory (NTPC) posts and re-
ceived about 1.25 crore appli-
cations for the Level 2 to
Level 6 posts. These exams
were held in phases between
December 28, 2020 and July
31, 2021. Violence erupted af-
ter candidates found that
same names were there in
results of different catego-
ries. Some of the applicants
point to the lack of transpar-
ency in the entire recruit-
ment process. The Railways
Ministry has formed a com-
mittee to look into the stu-
dents’ grievances but that
won’t be of much help as by
the time its findings are out,
hundreds of candidates may
lose out on the basis of age
eligibility criteria.
Those vandalising govern-
ment’s property must be pe-
nalised as even the Supreme
Court has been firm on that
view. At the same time the
railways owe an apology to
the candidates, who stand to
lose due to the RRB’s incom-
petence at a time when, as
per CMIE data, India had a
force of 530 lakh jobless peo-
ple as of December 2021.

S
PADMA AWARD:
LET’S NOT
POLITICIZE
BUDDHABABU’S
DECISION
n the chilly evening of Janu-
ary 25, 2022 veteran Left lead-
er and former Chief Minister
of West Bengal, Buddhadeb
Bhattacharjee made head-
lines, again through his mod-
est ways!
The former CM had said, “I
don’t know anything about a
Padma Bhushan award. No
one told me anything about
it. If they have given me a
Padma Bhushan award, I am
rejecting it.”
Having said that on Tues-
day evening, Buddhadeb on
Wednesday requested gov-
ernment officials not to call
or visit him regarding the
matter of Padma Bhushan.
West Bengal CPM state sec-
retary Surjya Kanta Misra
issued the statement on Bud-
dha’s behalf and said he can
be reached via post because
of his physical condition.
Explaining the party’s
stand, CPM leadership had
said that, “We, as a party,
don’t support the political
stand and economic policies
of the people who are confer-
ring the award. So, if we take
the award from them, we are
supporting them. Thus, we
refuse such awards. This is
our party’s stand. There is
individual opinion as well.
“Former UP CM Kalyan
Singh has received the Pad-
ma Vibhushan for public af-
fairs while Bhattacharya was
conferred Padma Bhushan.
In a way, Singh had a bad
historical background as,
during his tenure, Babri Mas-
jid was demolished while Bh-
attacharyahadacleanrecord.
Had Bhattacharya accepted
the award, it would have justi-
fied Singh’s award,” a senior
CPM leader was quoted.
According to the 1954 Pad-
ma awards order, a resident
may cancel and annual Pad-
ma Award. For withdrawal
or cancellation of awards,
the request can be examined
by the government.
However, No ‘formal’ con-
sent is required for a person
to be bestowed the Padma
awards but, as per the nor-
mal practice, the “willing-
ness of the person proposed
to be conferred with the title,
is informally ascertained”
before the announcement,
Union home ministry offi-
cials had confirmed.
However, “In accordance
with the normal practice,
willingness of the person pro-
posed to be conferred Padma
Awards is informally ascer-
tained (to the extent possible)
before the announcement of
the Award,” the Government
had told Rajya Sabha in 2015
while answering a question.
Political Grapevine has it
that soon after the announce-
ment, the CPM top leadership
in New Delhi had approached
Bhattacharya’s family and
persuaded them to refuse it
since the party as per the tra-
dition doesn’t accept such
honours. Mishra did appar-
ently discuss the award with
Bhattacharya’s family
.
Meanwhile, unfortunately,
The news of Buddhababu’s
Padma-rejection is creating
ripples in the political cir-
cles.If theLeftcamp“claims”
it is a political stunt of the
Centre, Trinamool Congress,
on the other hand, has (coun-
ter) claimed that the “addi-
tion of left-wingers is clear in
paying homage to Buddha
Babu.”
BJP state president Sukan-
ta Majumder, had said, “Bud-
dhadeb Bhattacharya is the
former chief minister of the
state. Keeping in mind his
social and administrative
contribution, the central gov-
ernment felt that he should
be honoured with the Padma
Bhushan. There is no need
for politics to reject the
award. It’s unwanted.”
BJP’s national vice-presi-
dent, Dilip Ghosh, said, “Bud-
dhababu’s rejection of the
award is his personal matter.
However, the CPM has never
maintainedthattradition.The
communists have always in-
sulted the culture of the coun-
try
. So not taking the award is
also a sign of that insult. ”
The matter was also all
over social media. CPM’s Fa-
cebook handle stated, “The
CPI(M)’s policy is consistent
in rejecting such awards
from the state. Our work is
for the people, not for re-
wards.” Everyone mentions
another former Chief Minis-
ter Jyoti Basu. Bharat Ratna
was rejected by Jyoti Basu.”
Alleging Ram-Bam “nex-
us”, Trinamool Congress
HAD CLAIMED THAT LEFT
VOTERS HAVE BEEN
THANKED NOW FOR HAV-
ING VOTED FOR THE BJP.
APART FROM THIS, TRINA-
MOOL’S MOUTHPIECE
‘JAGO BANGLA’ HAD SAID
ON WEDNESDAY THAT
BUDDHADEB HAS BEEN
RECOGNISED FOR CRUSH-
ING THE LAND ACQUISI-
TION MOVEMENT.
TMC also raised the point
of honouring three former
CMs together. It may be re-
called that Buddhadeb Bhat-
tacharjee from West Bengal,
Ghulam Nabi Azad from
Kashmir and Kalyan Singh
(posthumously) from Uttar
Pradesh were named.
TMC said Kalyan Singh
was accused of helping in
demolition of Babri Masjid,
while former Kashmir Chief
Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad,
for some time now… has
been facing opposition from
Congress itself and the party
(TMC) also claimed that the
BJP’s “closeness” was
“CLEARLY EVIDENT” in
the matter. TMC also went on
to say that Buddhadeb was
once close to LK Advani.

“He wants to be Azad

members of the group

ganisational overhaul
in the Congress con-
gratulated Azad for be-
ing awarded Padma

“well-deserved”. Re-
acting to the row, Singh
said he was distressed
at the “unseemly con-

deserved Padma Award
to Azad. “These Na-
tional Awards should
not become subject of
inter-party controversy
,
far less of intra-party
ones,” Singh, a former
Union minister and
party stalwart, said in a
statement.
“I have known Ghu-

New Delhi: Omicron is

said on Thursday.
There are also early in-
dications of a plateau
in the number of cases,
with just the top 10

77 per cent of total ac-

told reporters.
The percentage of

The govt credited

“Active case numbers

Budgetshouldfocusonbridging

New Delhi: The up-
coming Budget should
focus on creating jobs
and bridging the wid-
ened inequality in the
economy besides accel-
erating growth, former
RBI Governor D Sub-
barao said on Thurs-
day while observ-
ing that given the
continuing need
to raise spend-
ing on educa-
tion, health and
infrastructure,
there is not
much leeway for
tax cuts.
“Accelerat-
ing growth is
the objective
of every Budg-
et as it should be
of this one. But this
Budget should pay
special attention to
bridging the widened
inequality in the econ-
omy,” he said.
While noting that the
COVID-19 pandemic
has caused enormous
distress to
the low-in-
come seg-
ments who op-
erate in the infor-
mal econo-
my, Sub-
barao said
the upper income seg-
ments have not only
been able to protect
their incomes but have
in fact been able to
grow their savings and
wealth.
Citing the latest

port which

countries in the
world, he said,
“Such wide ine-
quality is
notonlymorallywrong
and politically corro-
sive, but it will also
dent our long-term
growth prospects.”
“We need job intensive
growth. If there is a
theme for this Budget,
it should be jobs,” he
said.
The former
RBI Gov-
e r n o r
pointed
out that
jobs have
been lost be-
cause of the
growth slow-
down and also
because of the
shift in activity
from the labour-
intensive informal
sector to the capi-
tal-intensive
formal sector.
“Growth is neces-
sary to generate jobs,
but not sufficient,” he
said, adding that there
is a need for stronger
emphasis on improv-
ing the ease of doing
business through gov-
ernance reforms so
that investment be-
comes a promising op-
tion for both domestic
and foreign investors.

1 million job potential in green sector by 2030
New Delhi: India’s re-
newable energy sector
has the potential to em-
ploy around one mil-
lion people by 2030, and
most of the new jobs
would be generated by
small-scale renewable
energy projects, ac-
cording to a study
.
India’s renewable en-
ergy sector could po-
tentially employ
around one million
people by 2030, which
would be ten times
more than the existing
workforce of an esti-
mated 1.1 lakh em-
ployed by the sector,
according to an inde-
pendent study released
on Thursday
.
The study ‘India’s
Expanding Clean En-

lighted that most of the
new jobs would be gen-
erated by small-scale
renewable energy pro-
jects such as rooftop
solar and mini and mi-
cro-grid systems com-
pared to utility or
large-scale projects like
solar parks.
The CEEW-NRDC-
SCGJ analysis also
highlighted the adverse
impact of the pandem-
ic on employment in
the renewable energy
sector.
In comparison to
12,400 new workers em-
ployed in the sector in

workers were employed
in FY20 and 6400 were
employed in FY21, it
said.

“We will come out

10 days. We will give
free transmission for
25 years. So you can
generate power for
making hydrogen in
Rajasthan or trans-
port it to Guwahati or

said Singh while ad-

The minister also
said that the policy
will feature dollar de-
nominated bids, offer
of land in renewable

land allocation near
ports for creating
bunkers for green hy-
drogen or ammonia.
“We want India to
emerge as the export-
er for green hydro-
gen... Japan wants to
import and Germany
also,” Singh said.
Raising the issue
of payment for power
supply, he said free
power supply ulti-
mately affects the en-
tire value chain.
“If he (politician or
public representa-
tive) wants to give 100
units free then he can
do so from the budg-
et. We don’t mind
that. He can give en-
tire taxpayers’ money
for free electricity or
water but then he
would not be left with
funds for develop-
ment of roads and
other works.”
The minister was
of the view that if
they (states) cannot
pay the subsidy for
free electricity from
their budget then
they should not prom-
ise such freebies.
About smart me-

informed that the

The Rajasthani cal-

The Annual Calendar of First India 2022 has a dual avatar this year, one of fashion
and glamour and another which exuberantly celebrates and promotes the tradition,
culture and heritage of Rajasthan. Jagdeesh Chandra launched both the calendars
on Thursday at Club Haven, Jaipur!
UNRIVALLED GLAMOUR!
The traditional calendar will not
only promote the culture and
heritage of Rajasthan across the
national and international audi-
ence in a hitherto unique manner
but will also provide Rajasthani girls with a
chance at employment in the national and
international fashion arena. This calendar
will ensure a place and platform for the
rural and young talent from the districts of
Rajasthan on the runways of international
repute.” —JAGDEESH CHANDRA

times when powerful

for women of great po-

As a part of its “Happi- ness is in Giving” initia- tive, the school marked the occasion by distrib- uting toys, stationery items, and other prod- ucts to those less fortu- nate than themselves. The school officials, teachers, students and parents visited differ- ent places in the city on Republic Day and dis- tributed clothes, essen- tial items, masks, sani- tisers, toys, and station- ery products to less fortunate children. Teachers distributed food and garments to pavement-dwellers. Led by principals Ashish Sutariya and Deepa Joshi, several teachers and dozens of students and parents took part in the initia- tive, which benefited more than 100 needy persons. With the aim to teach children to be- come more caring to- wards them, arrange- ments were also made to feed animals and birds. “Service to man is service to God. The real celebration is only when we can help oth- ers, and that is why we thought of celebrating this Republic Day dif- ferently,” said Prashant Gondaliya, Trustee, No- ble Public School. “The main objective of the ‘Happiness is in Giving’ initiative is to encourage the children to perform acts of kind- ness. First India Bureau Ahmedabad: Even as the Bharatiya Janata Party is busy training workers ahead of the Assembly elections slated to be held later this year, the Congress is attempting to ex- panding its base using social engineering. Af- ter appointing Jagdish Thakor state unit president and tribal leader Sukhram Rath- va as Leader of Oppo- sition, now it has now turned its attention to the Patidar communi- ty—by cosying up to Khodaldham presi- dent Naresh Patel and veteran leader Shan- kersinh Vaghela. Meanwhile, youth wing vice-president Yu- vraj Sinh Jadeja of the Aam Aadmi Party also met Naresh Patel on Thursday, ostensibly to “seek his support in making representation to the state over the government examina- tion scandals”. Patel has already hinted that he will join politics if the commu- nity “asks” him to do so, at an appropriate time. As a trustee of Khodaldham, Patel has lakhs of Patidars look up to him. “All those who be- lieve in Congress ideol- ogy are always wel- come to join the party. As to who will join when, it is up to the party high command,” Gujarat Congress in- charge Dr Raghu Shar- ma said. However, GPCC chief Thakor says the Con- gress is in touch with Patel and “other like- minded leaders”. At an event on Wednesday, Thakor praised Shankersinh Vaghela’s social and political contribution in the state and stat- ed, “Bapu means struggle and struggle means Bapu”. Four Patidar MLAs leaders from the Con- gress met also met for- mer leader of the Patidar Anamat An- dolan Samiti (PAAS) Alpesh Kathiriya on Wednesday, and asked him to join the party. Notably, MLAs Lalit Kagathra, Lalit Vasoya and Kirit Patel were all part of the Patidar movement, and Pratap Dudhat is the MLA for Amreli. These leaders feel that Kathiriya’s ad- dition will strengthen the Congress base in Saurashtra and in Patidar-dominated ar- eas in Surat. Meanwhile, AAp’s Jadeja insisted that his meeting with Patel was “non-political” in na- ture, saying, “Patel is not only a strong figure in the Patidar commu- nity, but also runs the running Sardar Patel Cultural Foundation, which helps students prepare for competitive examinations.” He added: “Since 2014, there have been at least 11 paper leaks but the government has done nothing to give justice to the clev- er aspirants who are suffering. Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president Jagdish Thakor, who made the announcement on Thursday, said that the fact-finding committee compris- ing senior party lead- ers and led by veter- an Arjun Modhwa- dia would fight for justice for the almost 17 lakh people who work at industrial units across the state. As many as 989 workers have died due to industrial ac- cidents and harmful toxic chemicals over the past five years, with Surat district seeing a lion’s share of these deaths caused by negli- gence, he said. Notably, Surat Sachin GIDC alone accounts for 50 tex- tile dyeing and printing mills more than 40 chemical units and some pow- er-loom units-most of which use mi- grant labour from Odisha, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. “The Sabarmati, Tapi, Vishwamitri and 17 other rivers in Gujarat are among the most pol- luted rivers in the country. And yet, several reports show that at least five to six trucks loaded with untreat- ed toxic chemical waste are illegally dumped in the city sewers each day, with the blessings of the Gujarat Pollu- tion Control Board. Authorities are de- liberately turning a blind eye to the nex- us between the unit owners and the GIDC authorities,” Thakor also alleged, adding that this has allowed an increase in pollution which, in turn, has put peo- ple’s lives at risk. The vic- tim came in touch with the accused af- ter running away from family and house in Chikhali. PSI KB Desai said that the victim had escaped her house because her parents wanted her to get married. She came in contact with the accused Suraj Singh in Surat about a year-and-a-half ago, the first time she fled her house. She had started living with him then. The vic- tim claims that Suraj had tried to rape her even then. This time again, after fleeing from her house she reached Surat and met Suraj. He assured her of a place to stay in Din- doli. But a week ago, it was found that the teenager had been constantly molested by her friend Suraj and his two associ- ates, Vimlesh Pathak and Chandan Jha. The trio took the 16-year-old girl to a closed building of SMC residence and allegedly raped her. They left the victim there, who then reached the furni- ture shop, where she was working and told everything to the owner of the shop Sanjaybhai. He then helped her file a com- plaint. A medical ex- amination is still pending. Unfortu- nately, the family members have dis- owned the victim. IS THERE TROUBLE WAITING FOR THE FORMER CM? SPIRITUAL SPEAK The peace of God is with them whose mind and soul are in harmony, who are free from desire and wrath, who know their own soul. —Bhagavad Gita IN-DEPTH TOP TWEETS HERCULEAN TASK FOR BJP IN WESTERN UTTAR PRADESH? nion Home Minister Amit Shah visiting door-to-door in one of the western UP districts, makes for a worrisome picture for BJP in Western UP. As Shah has taken on this Herlecuean task, it sug- gests a feeling of disquietude in the party. Watching Shah seek- ing votes for his party in Ma- thura-Vrindavan and earlier trying to entice Jayant Chaud- hary of the Rashtriya Lok Dal into his party when one cannot recall seeing such visuals in ei- ther 2014 or 2019, gives a hint of the picture. Western UP is cen- tral to BJP’s election strategy. Of the 70 seats in 20 districts of Meerut, Saharanpur and Mo- radabad, the party had won 51 in 2017. The region goes to vote in the first two phases on Febru- ary 10 and 14. Deaths of about 700 farmers during their year-long protest against the controversial farm laws may make it difficult for BJP to repeat that performance. To BJP’s disadvantage, the-Jat- Muslim communal divide has apparently been bridged to an extent. The SP-RLD tie-up may also queer the pitch for BJP. U tudents and job- seekers vent their anger over Rail- way Recruitment Board’s incompe- tence by burning trains and damaging railways property . As a double whammy, they were chased and beaten up by the police. Those protesting were students from Bihar and poll-bound Uttar Pradesh. The violent protests began on January 24, after RRB declared the results of the first phase of examina- tions held across the country on January 10. The RRB fi- asco is a cruel joke on thou- sands of unemployed youth. Around the time of parlia- mentary elections in 2019, railways invited applica- tions for a little over 35000 Non-Technical Popular Cat- egory (NTPC) posts and re- ceived about 1.25 crore appli- cations for the Level 2 to Level 6 posts. These exams were held in phases between December 28, 2020 and July 31, 2021. Violence erupted af- ter candidates found that same names were there in results of different catego- ries. Some of the applicants point to the lack of transpar- ency in the entire recruit- ment process. The Railways Ministry has formed a com- mittee to look into the stu- dents’ grievances but that won’t be of much help as by the time its findings are out, hundreds of candidates may lose out on the basis of age eligibility criteria. Those vandalising govern- ment’s property must be pe- nalised as even the Supreme Court has been firm on that view. At the same time the railways owe an apology to the candidates, who stand to lose due to the RRB’s incom- petence at a time when, as per CMIE data, India had a force of 530 lakh jobless peo- ple as of December 2021. RRB’S CRUEL JOKE ON THE JOBLESS YOUTH The Railways Ministry has formed a committee to look into the students’ grievances but that won’t be of much help as by the time its findings are out, hundreds of candidates may lose out on the basis of age eligibility criteria S PADMA AWARD: LET’S NOT POLITICIZE BUDDHABABU’S DECISION n the chilly evening of Janu- ary 25, 2022 veteran Left lead- er and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee made head- lines, again through his mod- est ways! The former CM had said, “I don’t know anything about a Padma Bhushan award. No one told me anything about it. If they have given me a Padma Bhushan award, I am rejecting it.” Having said that on Tues- day evening, Buddhadeb on Wednesday requested gov- ernment officials not to call or visit him regarding the matter of Padma Bhushan. West Bengal CPM state sec- retary Surjya Kanta Misra issued the statement on Bud- dha’s behalf and said he can be reached via post because of his physical condition. Explaining the party’s stand, CPM leadership had said that, “We, as a party, don’t support the political stand and economic policies of the people who are confer- ring the award. So, if we take the award from them, we are supporting them. Thus, we refuse such awards. This is our party’s stand. There is individual opinion as well. “Former UP CM Kalyan Singh has received the Pad- ma Vibhushan for public af- fairs while Bhattacharya was conferred Padma Bhushan. In a way, Singh had a bad historical background as, during his tenure, Babri Mas- jid was demolished while Bh- attacharyahadacleanrecord. Had Bhattacharya accepted the award, it would have justi- fied Singh’s award,” a senior CPM leader was quoted. According to the 1954 Pad- ma awards order, a resident may cancel and annual Pad- ma Award. For withdrawal or cancellation of awards, the request can be examined by the government. However, No ‘formal’ con- sent is required for a person to be bestowed the Padma awards but, as per the nor- mal practice, the “willing- ness of the person proposed to be conferred with the title, is informally ascertained” before the announcement, Union home ministry offi- cials had confirmed. However, “In accordance with the normal practice, willingness of the person pro- posed to be conferred Padma Awards is informally ascer- tained (to the extent possible) before the announcement of the Award,” the Government had told Rajya Sabha in 2015 while answering a question. Political Grapevine has it that soon after the announce- ment, the CPM top leadership in New Delhi had approached Bhattacharya’s family and persuaded them to refuse it since the party as per the tra- dition doesn’t accept such honours. Mishra did appar- ently discuss the award with Bhattacharya’s family . Meanwhile, unfortunately, The news of Buddhababu’s Padma-rejection is creating ripples in the political cir- cles.If theLeftcamp“claims” it is a political stunt of the Centre, Trinamool Congress, on the other hand, has (coun- ter) claimed that the “addi- tion of left-wingers is clear in paying homage to Buddha Babu.” BJP state president Sukan- ta Majumder, had said, “Bud- dhadeb Bhattacharya is the former chief minister of the state. Keeping in mind his social and administrative contribution, the central gov- ernment felt that he should be honoured with the Padma Bhushan. There is no need for politics to reject the award. It’s unwanted.” BJP’s national vice-presi- dent, Dilip Ghosh, said, “Bud- dhababu’s rejection of the award is his personal matter. However, the CPM has never maintainedthattradition. The communists have always in- sulted the culture of the coun- try . So not taking the award is also a sign of that insult. ” The matter was also all over social media. CPM’s Fa- cebook handle stated, “The CPI(M)’s policy is consistent in rejecting such awards from the state. Our work is for the people, not for re- wards.” Everyone mentions another former Chief Minis- ter Jyoti Basu. Bharat Ratna was rejected by Jyoti Basu.” Alleging Ram-Bam “nex- us”, Trinamool Congress HAD CLAIMED THAT LEFT VOTERS HAVE BEEN THANKED NOW FOR HAV- ING VOTED FOR THE BJP. APART FROM THIS, TRINA- MOOL’S MOUTHPIECE ‘JAGO BANGLA’ HAD SAID ON WEDNESDAY THAT BUDDHADEB HAS BEEN RECOGNISED FOR CRUSH- ING THE LAND ACQUISI- TION MOVEMENT. TMC also raised the point of honouring three former CMs together. It may be re- called that Buddhadeb Bhat- tacharjee from West Bengal, Ghulam Nabi Azad from Kashmir and Kalyan Singh (posthumously) from Uttar Pradesh were named. TMC said Kalyan Singh was accused of helping in demolition of Babri Masjid, while former Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, for some time now… has been facing opposition from Congress itself and the party (TMC) also claimed that the BJP’s “closeness” was “CLEARLY EVIDENT” in the matter. TMC also went on to say that Buddhadeb was once close to LK Advani. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL O In a way, former UP CM Kalyan Singh had a bad historical background as, during his tenure, Babri Masjid was demolished while Bhattacharya had a clean record. Singh’s comments come amid a controver- sy triggered soon after the announcement of the Padma awards on Tuesday evening when Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, while com- menting on CPI (M) leader Buddhadeb Bh- attacharya’s refusal to accept the award, said, “He wants to be Azad not Ghulam”. Several members of the group of 23 leaders who had written to Sonia Gan- dhi demanding an or- ganisational overhaul in the Congress con- gratulated Azad for be- ing awarded Padma Bhushan, saying it was “well-deserved”. Re- acting to the row, Singh said he was distressed at the “unseemly con- troversy” over the well deserved Padma Award to Azad. “These Na- tional Awards should not become subject of inter-party controversy , far less of intra-party ones,” Singh, a former Union minister and party stalwart, said in a statement. “I have known Ghu- lam Nabi for half a cen- tury since he first start- ed his political career as an active participant in my second election campaign for the Lok Sabha in 1971 from the Udhampur constituen- cy, to which he be- longs,” he said. Follow- ing the unconventional path, she has paved a different way for her- self on the global front. And to celebrate these 10 glorious years of success, she launched her collection THE PHARAOH'S, based on the Egyptian mon- archs recently. The concept is based on empowered women rulers like Nefertiti and Cleopatra from Egyptian monarchs times when powerful women uplifted society for the better and great- er cause. It was easier for women of great po- tential to be in power during that era.
